Exhibition games rule change

Starting this season, teams can play up to 3 exhibition games. The difference as I believe from the past where it was a "secret scrimmage", now teams can play in front of crowds. Syracuse plays UConn Oct. 13th in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame exhibition event in Uncasville,Ct. Their women's teams play the night before.

Since these are just basically scrimmages, play the best of the best.

See where you're at, heading into the season.

Duke, Arizona, Kansas (for a 'regional matchup'), UConn, etc.

Ben would love to do that, but it's very difficult, especially in the NIL era.

Not sure how playing the best of the best helps in a scrimmage. If you have a young team and they get blown out, does it hurt them for the remainder of the season. Scrimmages aren't designed for the fans.

You're gonna find out a lot more about what you need to work on to make the best of the season vs those types than the Marathon Oil's of the world.

What's better? Beating a tiny D2 Iowa school by 50+ in a scrimmage and then losing to a really good team by 25+ when the games count - or losing big to one of the best of the best in an exhibition to know what it'll take to compete against the MSU, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa St, etc, type teams on the real schedule??


If losing an exhibition game - especially against really good competition - destroys a team's confidence, there's a lot more problems going on than needing to worry about how good a season could turn out.

I look at it this way. After growing up in Chicago and getting my a** kicked a few times, would you rather fight the neighborhood "Tough" guy and get your a** kicked, or would you rather fight the skinniest kid and kick his a**? If you fight the tough kid and somehow win, then you've done something. The downside to that is that you're gonna get invitations to fight down by the tracks every other day.
