As a University we should invest more in women’s sports

Football obviously pays the bills and should be priority #1. It gets most exposure by far. If we don’t invest HEAVILY in it, and decide oh well we are poor little MSU and have no chance… this is what EVERYONE will see and associate us with... being a loser. Crazy that it doesn’t stop Ole Miss from succeeding.

That aside, if we move down the list and start discussing other sports. Men’s and women’s basketball at the collegiate level are becoming very close in terms of exposure. 2a/2b

Softball has surpassed baseball at the collegiate level and is only gaining serious momentum while baseball flails.

Let’s be smart about this. Even if we win the next 20 baseball national championships, nobody except an extreme minority even cares or knows about it. It doesn’t promote MSU or progress us forward AT ALL to the masses.

We can discuss ratings and trends. It’s truly sad the state we are in as a fanbase. Few are excited about football. Season tickets have plummeted. Stadium will likely be half full at best all year except when Alabama fills it up.

Sad to use them as a measuring stick, but Ole Miss is in serious playoff/heisman conversation. They’re in the same state with the same resources. Far better administration, obviously.

It sucks, but thinking of the future and trends and ratings… we are SINKING this university by investing in baseball. We’d be far better off pouring into softball which actually has a future. Football should be top priority for forseeable future. Thoughts?

Got anything intelligent to add?
As a matter of fact, no. I realize you are either an olemiss troll with too much time on his hands, or a lunatic fringe, self-loathing State fan with narcisstic tendencies and too much time on his hands. Neither of which do I have the time or the inclination to interact with right now. So no I don't.

But by all means, carry on, wayward son. Maybe this time you will convince everyone on this Mississippi State message board that all our mens teams suck (somehow especially baseball??) and that we should give them up and support womens sports. It should be a rousing debate.

I can’t stand ole miss. I have NEVER liked them. I’m sorry you don’t want to see MSU succeed. Unlike you, I care about the future of OUR school.

Oh I think he's real. Didn't he mention recently that he trolls us for his mental health or something?

Either way none of the small investment in small or non-revenue sports moves the needle for football, we all know that. So you do what gets you the most trophies, that's baseball for us. Seems like the trans thread the other day put the cherry on this conversation.

Who cares? I like following our baseball team because it makes me personally happy, not because I think it will make us look cool to other people.

I dont think dumping a bunch of money into softball instead of baseball is going to move the needle...regardless of what needle we are even talking about.

It wont make us money as a university through increased enrollment.
It wont make us money as a university through increased donations or sponsorships.
It wont make us a better known university to the general public.

Whatever needle you want to look at, it wont move.

Based on a few responses from this thread, if this is representative of our fanbase and administration as a whole there’s no mystery whatsoever we are in the state we are in.

Fair points, and I’m certainly not proposing invest our entire budget into softball. However, wouldn’t we be wise to invest in a positive trend and not a backwards one? I see it often said we should divert more football funds to baseball because we will always suck in football anyway… are we really that dumb collectively? Any money put into baseball may as well be flushed down the toilet. If it’s at the expense of other sports actually growing, my gosh we are dumb.

Well how do you feel about Trans in women's sports? Does that equate? I mean I seen the Quite on the Creek video. Some of them boys might become ladies soon.

I care as much about that as I do which way the wind is blowing in China. Complete non-issue.

Last time I went to a MSU women's basketball game, we were playing UNA. UNA had a couple of blondes that could ball. I found myself rooting for the blondes to win.

I have never concerned myself with other men’s private parts but to each their own, I guess. There’s a lot of men out there who do and that will always be the case. Y’all are trolling. Stay on topic.

You claimed that even if MSU won the next 20 NCAA World Series, it doesnt promote MSU or progress MSU forward to 'the masses'.

Nothing you have posted comes close to showing that investing more into softball instead of baseball would promote MSU or progress MSU forward to 'the masses.

That’s fair, let’s think about trends and where everything is going. I know we must also work with the here and now with that said. Softball viewership has blown past baseball at the collegiate level. Over the last 20 years you’re talking about 300-400% growth while baseball hasn’t grown at all. This trend will only continue. This is not some grand revelation. Where the eyeballs are where the money will be in the future.

If we want to talk about “personal happiness”… at the expense of the future of our school. That’s the equivalent of you saying “well watching guys roll around on the floor together makes me happy, we should only invest in wrestling…” is ridiculous and extremely counterproductive.

I don't think any of our fans care about college wrestling at all. But if a huge chunk of our fans did care about wrestling and wanted us to be a national power, then 100% yes we should have a team and invest in it.

Yep, softball viewership has grown a lot.
With that considered, more spending isnt going to progress MSU forward, which is what you initially claimed is the goal.
The needle wont move.

I dont know what this means. Like 0 idea. I dont know why you mention talking about personal happiness and I dont know why personal happiness would be at the expense of the future of MSU.

I am unsure why you brought any of this up.

That was in response to someone stating “we should invest in baseball because it makes me happy…” it wasn’t directed at you.

South Carolina has absolutely tanked their athletic department for success of women's basketball.

In the 2010s, they had two baseball national championships, two SEC Championship appearances in football, a Final Four in basketball.

As a women's basketball powerhouse, in the 2020s, they have three baseball regional appearances and four seasons where they did not make the tournament, three bowl games and four losing seasons in football, and their basketball team is atrocious.

That’s a good point. Even if we were to look at that example… they are at least investing in something that is growing leaps and bounds and has a massive future. Women’s basketball, nationally, commands approximately TEN TIMES or 1000% the viewers of college baseball. Are they being run optimally? No, but they are going about it so much more intelligently than we currently are.
