I just don't understand this train of thought, "even if there is no racial element to Fortune's death". Mark me down as one who begs for racial harmony in this State, I am a firm believer that we need it to move forward, and honestly, it's just the right thing. I am all for downtown public hangings. Not race related but for lethal crimes and possibly rapes. If youth actually saw the consequences of those type actions, they might think twice before committing the crimes.

If a young woman was indeed murdered by hanging who is one of his constituents, I don’t think him calling for justice is out of line. He even threw in that it might not be racially moderated. Like it or not, a black woman getting hung in Jackson Mississippi is going to stir a lot of bad feelings, especially in the black community. There are still people there Who lived through the 1960’s. I don’t think him calling for a thorough investigation is inappropriate. Maybe it was racially motivated. Maybe it wasn’t. Maybe it was suicide. I try to be empathetic and consider what my mindset might be had my parents, grandparents, and previous generations of family had been treated the way theirs had.

But this one is hard to see. About twelve years ago I had to go to Road of Remembrance for work. I'll just say I remember it to this day, and that if a white person is there they will absolutely be noticed.

I find it HIGHLY unlikely that there was any sort of racial motivation related to this. Where this happened, there aren't exactly white gangs riding around looking to lynch black people. This isn't the 1950's.

Agreed. But I understand that the optics of this are going to fan the flames of the past. In all honesty the authorities throwing their full weight behind the investigation and getting an answer as quickly as possible is by far the best thing. I also think involving the federal government is a good idea because there are going to be people who won’t believe the local government if this comes back as a suicide. And yes, I know there are people who won’t believe it no matter what.

I don’t think anyone disagrees with getting a murder/death solved ASAP. However, trying to interject race into this is just very irresponsible, to say the least, and does nothing to accomplish solving it expeditiously. If anything, it will likely slow it down.

Recent events in this country have opened my eyes to just how many racists are still around. And I’m not talking about the honkies. There is a large, vocal subset of another subset of the population that absolutely hate white people. That is discouraging. I am constantly reading things like, “black people would NEVER hang themselves!”

There are people who truly believe that there are roving bands of white people in urban black areas that are lynching people under cover of darkness. That’s wild to me.
