I looked at teaching elementary school after I retired and it was absurd. I have a Masters already albeit not in education and I would have to go back to school for like 2-3 years plus a ton of tuition money and this was just at some local college. All to get their "teachers certificate".

That will soon be the situation for many majors given how AI can do almost any job (save original art - natch) easier and more efficiently.

My most accomplished (academic) friend (Harvard, Oxford, on two boards at Harvard) isn’t flashy; sensible cars, very nice but modest home (for his income) but spares no expense on vacations and experiences (several World Cup games this year for example, F1 races, etc). Probably because unlike others, he is self made. Most of my other wealthy friends are entrepreneurs or in finance (PE, VC). Common denominator? All their kids go to top colleges - Penn, Harvard, Chicago, Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Stanford, etc. These are kids who do not need to work either - ever.

The government has become so heavy handed that a lot of professions require a masters degree when IMO that isn't necessary. Elementary school teachers are a prime example. Physical therapists are required to have a doctor of physical therapy degree.

Too many people run up a lot of debt to get degrees in things like Culinary Arts, Fashion Design, Theater, Art History, and Music. I don't think it's right to tell people they can't major in such things but I also thing the government should refuse to give loans to people majoring in things that don't have a ROI.

The government shouldn't be in the business of discriminating against various educational avenues and occupations based on "average ROI."

Also, school teachers aren't the brightest bulbs ... very, very few elementary school teachers were the top students/intellects in their high school class. An argument can be made that they NEED the extra schooling to get them up to speed, so they can teach others.

And, finally, EVERYTHING has an "ROI," no matter how high or low ... positive or negative.

And many successful "financial professionals" weren't biz majors (or STEM), but got their foot in the door by being bright, or connected, with a liberal arts degree. Outside of heavy quant work, or other areas where you need certain certifications you can only obtain through completing certain schooling, you don't need to be "business educated" to be successful in the world of business. It's a world of bullspitting and schmoozing ... again, outside of the world of quants.
