I don't have a hatred, Morris and JCA have always had a mutual respect during their playoff rivalry, just pointing out facts that refute things people say about there not being that much of an imbalance or how it's only been recently lopsided.

Don't see how it's bizarre hypothetical considering it was brought up earlier how coaches who have coached at public schools had little to no success, but when they were at privates they were wildly successful. Seems natural to consider whether it could be done or not.

Poor hypothetical considering I'm no fan of the Morris coach and don't think he could win a state title with U of I's roster. Dealing with all Lynch has to deal with as the MC coach is his fulltime job, plus I feel like it's safe to say he delegates duties to others on staff as well. The Morris coach is also the Vice Principal and has to deal with all the nonsense that comes with that position rather than focusing on football alone. How many of MC's coaches also teach versus being able to focus on football fulltime?
If the Morris coach was a bad example feel free to insert another coach in there. But really, would they want that responsibility, that pressure? or are they pretty satisfied with hanging back and playing the hand they are dealt with their schools? Its almost like the saying "More money more problems". Like you said, it's a full time job dealing with all he has to deal with.

I'm far from a supporter of private schools. However, you reduce those boundaries and it's almost a guarantee most close. It's a numbers game and those numbers get exponentially smaller if you reduce that radius by half.

If there is a true answer to "competitive balance," radius reduction is not it.

A great example of winning without the best talent is Cary Grove. Yes they have a few studs but overall they are undersized and get the most out of their kids. That to me is great coaching. What other schools don't have 7-8 D1 players but still win a lot of games? I can't think of too many other schools like that. Don't get me wrong I think guys like Lynch and Holecek are great coaches, but they are already a step ahead with the talent they have. My question is, could you put them at a solid 8A public school like Barrington and would they be perennial semi-finalists/finalists? I'm not sure.

I guess the better question is what coaches don't win but have great talent at their school? Public or Private.
I'd put Oswego on that list.

I've met Lynch, once, for a brief chat before last year's title game. He seems to be in control of his "status" and I think he likes to play games with the media.

Playoffs should be 8 classes of Public Schools and 4 classes of private, separated and let them recruit and do whatever they want. Distance, out of state, tuition fees, etc..

most private school football players are not paying full tuition and nothing will be done until all schools are foia, which will never happen with private schools.
Where are you getting your information that most private football players are not paying full tuition? That is obviously something that you completely made up and you have no specific knowledge of. If so, rather than make something up, give us an example. I coached at two separate vey successful ccl schools both with multiple state championships for more than 15 years and that was not the case. Those who did not pay full tuition had to apply for and satisfy the same criteria for financial aid every other student. Many prospective students, athletes and non-athletes, did not attend those schools since, even with financial aid, the cost was not financially viable for the family. In either event, even if certain student athletes do qualify for financial aid, what are you suggesting exactly?

I just think there needs to be a level playing field. Makes zero sense to have schools playing by different rules. I'd be even more frustrated by it if I wasnt a parent of a CPL football player. At least we have the city championships and prep bowl to gun for(which some downstate schools balk at and keep trying to have ruled illegal...go figure) after our ultimate demise in the state playoffs.

I have a feeling things would have changed years ago if it was CPL loading up on the talent.

Based on basketball I dont know if thats true, but I understand the sentiment. They would just throw flags until you lost in the playoffs.

You think so? It would just force kids to go closer to home if they want to play sports. It might actually help private schools stay open. The more that I think about it, it may even level out some of the talent accumulation at certain schools.

You've been around this world awhile, Did your strong hatred of Private schools exist in the 80's, 90's, 00's and even early 10's when the Public schools were winning titles regularly and competing with the CCL's or is this just recent? I've seen MC lose State Titles to Wheaton North, Maine South twice, Prospect, and WWS and go down in the semifinals to Glenbard North, Hinsdale Central, St. Charles North....and I don't how we lost those games being able to bring in players with our unfair advantage?
You did lose but you also had more D1 players on every single roster in those games you listed. So yes, you lost with more talented rosters which kind of undercuts your own argument.

My suggestion for a reduced boundary was just for sports and would also include a population density aspect. Reduce the boundary for Chicago area teams to 15 miles if you want to play sports, but those schools can still draw the remainder of their student body from a 30 mile, or greater radius.

False news. Your just assuming. Many of those teams they lost too were loaded, couple of Illinois Player of the Years on those rosters of teams who beat us. I'll go back when I have enough time and through some of the big names on those teams but I'm exhausted from yesterday's debates 😂. But please keep in mind that in Lenti's 35 years he obviously had numerous D1 players but they weren't overflowing like they have now. He would maybe have 1 or 2 on each team, honestly sometimes none. 1988 State Champions had ZERO from their senior class. They had tough hardnose players who played perfectly into Lentis system. This large amount of D1 has been really been this past couple seasons due to the success Lynch has had, but until now the 2019 State team had 3 D1, only 1 from the Senior class, 2022 had 2 from the Senior Class....2023 had 4.....2024 had 2....last years senior class had 5....it's really this current class and nexts years class that has about 20 players...but historically they've not had the loaded teams you would think just well coached players. Many did play D2, D3 and NAIA.

I love these ideas of "they can go to the school they just can't play sports" it's laughable. Can they be on the chess team? They compete, how about Robotics team that competes or the debate team who competes? They have a Bass Fishing team at MC that competes could the young lads go Fishing? What if we get a ringer from Louisiana? If yes to any of the above then what's the difference between Football and Bass Fishing?

If your child goes to a Private school and you or someone on their behalf pay the thousands upon thousands of dollars it costs to attend the school you should be entitled to participate in anything that school has to offer for the money that you pay, period.

I love the "well we lost that game that one time" argument. Stop making it seem like this is a recent anomaly. Yes, public schools have won the majority of the titles, as they should; they make up 85% of the IHSA member schools. Since the beginning, in 1974 there have been 348 state champions crowned across all classes in football and private schools account for 126 titles. So only 15% of the schools are responsible for 36% of the championships. Doesn't matter what decade, it's not new.

I believe you were the one who brought up the Phil Jackson example, so what's your answer? Is it the coach or the players? Evanston and Minooka are 8A schools, so there's plenty of kids in the building, who are regular playoff teams, so hardly rags to riches. 5 rings and 3 undefeated seasons is absolutely incredible, but the question will always linger as to whether he could do it without an all star team. I love how the other coaches you mention also only coached in the CCL. What about coaches like Mike Noll or Larry McKeon who had success at multiple schools with just kids from the district or coaches like Reents who makes his system work with whoever gets off the bus and not bringing in kids that fit his system.

Find me a coach listed in the link that had success in the CCL and at a public school.

Byron has been truly elite - especially during the Caden Considine years, but they did catch and beat Montini pre-Izzy and when the Broncos were just starting to recover from their worst couple year stretch in decades. “3A sized” Montini right now would be among the favorites in 5A and probably beyond.

The 2006 MC team that lost to WWS had 4 starters go D1 and their best player the QB went D2, 95% of the school the state don't produce that many D1 players in 15 years yet alone on 1 team. You act like only having 1 or 2 D1 players a year when Lenti was the coach is not a big deal, believe me its a big deal.

Huh?

They’ve played 2 outstanding games the past three years and the game Byron lost was by by 1.

Therefor, your arguement is 💩
Yes, that is poor coaching by Montini to have that much of a talent advantage and lose then have a 1 point win over Byron. Hats off to Byron yes, but hats on to Montini.

Ghost, I’ve long contended that if Taft could get all the talent that grew up in the neighborhood that played at LA, MS. ND, SP, DPA …they’d be perennial contenders. No doubt the same at Morgan Park or Agg?
Morgan Park for sure. It is a neighborhood school with a boundary. Ag is a selective enrollment school, so they can get kids from all over the city if they qualify.

If a certain athlete wants to attend a CPL school that is selective, alternative, or for argument sake Military, odds of that athlete getting into that school is very good. I've know many athletes that left MC that didn't live anywhere near Phillips that ended up at Phillips and was told that they are an alternative school and boundaries didn't matter....there is a student at Simeon that lives very close to me and he lives 3 blocks
from Morgan Park. Again was told that Simeon doesn't have boundaries because it was classified as a alternative school. Again Im hearing things second and third hand, you have a good grip on the CPS, can you indulge. Because it seems like they can move around pretty easily now
When Phillips was really rolling, they were run by a charter. The same that charter that ran Solario Academy. They were not run by CPS. Charters have the ability to admit/reject anyone, and they also can compensate coaches/teachers differently than CPS. They are not run by the charter anymore... not exactly a coincidence that they have dropped off a bit. Simeon is a Career Academy, which makes them selective enrollment. No comment on their enrollment criteria. Granted, many CPL schools are selective enrollment, (military academies, medical programs, career academies) so kids can move to those programs if they qualify. Again, no comment on the criteria for admission. Schools like Taft, Morgan Park, Mather, etc... are neighborhood schools. Attendance boundaries matter. If those schools have selective enrollment programs like IB, then students can apply for those from around the city.

One of the reasons this is a tough discussion to have is people pretend having a handful of recruits is having "more talent". In some cases it is.

Even better than having a couple D1 guys is having 22 good football players to fill your offense defense and a few more for special teams. A few D1 guys and a few solid players may be enough to beat Bradley, Stagg, Shepard, Reavis, Romeoville, and Thornwood in the 90s, but not enough to beat Andrew regularly and certainly not enough to beat MCs 22 which also includes a handful of D1 guys.

Those 96 and 98 WWS teams were phenomenal. Same with 2006. Thats who 96 and 98 MC should have been playing, those 6A teams were better equipped to deal with CCL O/D lines (which I think was the biggest difference back then).-

Now MC has those same good 22 but also a dozen or more P4 recruits in that 22.

I would have been Morgan Park and if everyone zoned for MP went their they would be State Champions multiple times for the last 50 years. But I'm assuming you grew up the same way I did, but just the North Side version and that was going to a public school, whether grade school or high school was never an option for me as my parents were off the boat Irish and extremely devout Catholics and I was going to a Catholic school whether I was good at sports or not 😂. And that was the same deal for 99% of the South Side neighborhoods as most were city workers and most were devout Catholic. I'm living in the same boat now, I'm forced to live in Chicago and I'm not insane Catholic as my parents were God Bless their Souls but I'm practicing for sure as is my wife and we've sent all of our kids through Catholic Schools and it wasn't an option for them either.

Public Grade schools are becoming more common now with the rising tuitions but Catholic High Schools still rule the South Side. And I've worked countless side job and OT and we've made numerous sacrifices to make sure our children attended these schools so that's why I really taken it to heart to think that it's even being talked about families who pay the tuition can have their kids attend but not play sports because of a mileage issue? For all the money you've sacrificed to pay you better have access to all the school had to offer. Is it like buying the delux packages now?

Package 1- If you live over 15 miles away your child may only attend classes and go home for the same price as the deluxe package

Deluxe Package- Sell your home or rent property within the mileage and you get full access to all the school has to offer for the same price as package 1! (Best Deal)

Yeah I see so many Charter Schools all over now I was confused to the differences, but thank you for clarifying.

Truth to all this is "He who is without sin may cast the first stone" Well the CCL, Suburban Public, and CPL are all dropping their stones because everyone is playing dirty in their own ways. CCL will take the lions share of the criticism but be careful opening Pandora's Box because Dirty Deeds by others will come flying out.

You’re losing your argument here. I’m not a hater of private schools but a junior who going to a power 4/5 school is going to stand out as well. Look at last year, I don’t know of another school in Illinois that has had 14-15(that’s me estimating, I don’t know the actual number) high d1 kids starting for them. Don’t just use senior class, juniors going to high d1 schools are ridiculously talented in high school football.

Lynch is a great coach, but having that stable of talent goes a long way against 99.9% of high school teams.

I’d really like to see what he does at a solid public school. Would he be a perennial finalist? Not likely.

Not losing it all. I stated the that the uptick in D1 players has been over the past couple seasons but before that MC had nothing like what they have now as far as D1 players. Going back to the 80's with all there success they didn't have these many players with these many offers and that goes up to just a couple seasons ago.

D1 offers don't guarantee wins and that is my point. They've been beaten by so many talented teams and got all they could handle in the State game last year by teams with great players and coaching but because of a slightly less number of height and speed they didn't get the same offers. It doesn't take away their ability and MC has fallen victim to it many times.

Let's not play the hypothetical game and "What if" BS that he couldn't win at a public. You don't know the answer to that anymore then I do. He was offered the job by his Alma Mater and he took it along with all the attention both good and bad that comes with it. Impossible to know how he would do, maybe a school should reach out to him. Much better retirement packages in the Public Schools!
Last weeks MC hypothetical question was "How do you think MC would have done without the 19 penalties yardage from ESL?" Impossible to know.

Lastly, D1 "offers" are not held with the same regard as they used to be. I doubt many of them are commitable and I bet many are taken back. D1 offers are getting tossed out like candy at a parade. Schools are hedging their bets in case they lose from the portal. Once they know their roster, the offer disappears. Freshman are getting multiple offers. None of this happened at this rate even 5 years ago.

So you are going to tell me Justin Scott paid tuition at Ignatius? I said most players are not, a good portion are paying full tuition. Iggy is a little different situation because it costs way more than most private schools. “Third party” companies lol, I have coached football at both private and public schools and have had my own kids in both. I know how it works.
More reason I say their records need to be FOIA, it would limit transfers or kids traveling over 30 miles to the southside private schools. It’s not hard to say “donor paid” and have their tuition reduced or totally paid for. Or their “test scores” got them an “academic scholarship” for spelling their name correctly.

No guarantees, but it sure helps when your recruiting area is a population of roughly 2.5 million people.

Stop making it sound like every big game or title game MC is in is a nail biter they got lucky to win. No, MC hasn't fallen victim to it many times, you're cherry picking games they lost to schools that had generational classes coming through the halls.

MC is 17-5 in title games in those 17 wins the average score has been 30-9 with 4 shutouts, so again, not exactly falling victim many times. In their 5 losses the average score was 31-17.

Please post your evidence? My son went Ignatius and played football. Believe me we paid full tuition. Catholic schools tend to use third party companies to give out financial way in a need blind way.
Per MC's website 80% of students receive some sort of financial assistance. I'm guessing the football team isn't the 20% paying full price.

If I'm remembering right Justin Scott didn't even start playing football until he went to Ignatius or so I'm told. Honestly with other schools your argument holds water but not with Iggy. They rarely recruit anyone and they are the stingiest with any aid. Your paying there, even with Aid it's more expensive then most other schools. They are extremely strict with this.
