5 STAR Steve was not washed out BUT BEAT OUT by some 2 star freshmen recruit named Tommy Shuman from Pottstown. He went 22-2 and won most valuable player in the COTTON AND ORANGE bowels. Steve took off for Temple.
Joachim had an excellent career at Temple. I believe he won the Maxwell (National MVP, pre-dates the Heisman) Award his senior year. Ok, so maybe some home cooking on the votes there, but still.
I think before Shuman, Joachim had lost out to, or could not beat out, John Hufnagle, who was our QB from mid-way in the 1970 season through 1972. Another excellent college QB, as was Shuman.
In any event, he was not going to be the starter at PSU unless via injury to the QBs ahead of him. He was smart enough to go where he was given the chance to shine under the outstanding HoF Coach Wayne Hardin at Temple. For those who may not know, Hardin was the Head Coach at Navy, and coached two Heisman winners in Joe Bellino (1960) and the great Roger Staubach (1963). Hardin knew how to take a bunch of tough guys with decent athleticism and turn them into physical, nasty street-fighters on the field. We had our hands full with them more than once in the 70s.
The 2nd ever Garden State Bowl, in East Rutherford NJ in late December 1979(?) had Temple playing a very good Cal team, featuring Joe Roth (I think... or another prominent Cal QB from that era) at QB. Temple beat them by like 28-17, and Cal's comments after the game were about not having played games at such a highly physical level. Temple wanted that win badly and beat 'em up to get it.
