I've watched it 1000 times and can't pin the purposeful part on him. It's a bad drop, got it. Was there any evidence he had gambled like Pete Rose - or no? From what I know, 1 guy said it in a book or an article - and the conspiracy ran.
Police and investigators looked into it and there was zero evidence. This is a dead fish until someone shows me there was an ounce of evidence instead of a single accusation.

His reaction after the initial drop is so strange. Typically when the ball bounces off your hands, you reach out & attempt to grab it. Even if it's unlikely you'll catch it. It's just a natural reaction all players make.
But not here. The ball bounces off Fryar's hands and he makes absolutely zero attempt to try and catch it. Looks intentional.

I agree it looked bad. Non chalant. I just don't think I can make the leap to rigged and gambled based on the reaction.
The part of this story that few people talk about is after Jeff Smith scores a TD moments later, Fryar comes up to Smith, appears to congratulate him, and seems to me happy that we scored.

It was the way it was "dropped" that is highly suspicious. Some guys will let the ball get too far into their body. Some guys have a ball hit their hands wrong or go right through. However, Irving tapped the ball away from himself on the way into the endzone. Seen plenty of drops in person, on YT and I have stone hands myself. Fryar's "drop" was mechanically unique at the least.
As far as a "link" to gambling, I have none. However, Fryar had known links to shady folks in his pro days, and some questionable actions after his career was over. This was 1983, and I could just as well see a star player being intimidated through 3rd parties. Its possible that it was intentional and there was nothing to gain aside from assurance of safety.

Well so be it. Considering we scored on the next play and the two point conversion didn’t involve him that play had zero impact on the game. After 42 years get a life .
That’s far from fact. IF he catches it, then the following play that did happen, doesn’t happen, and neither does any play thereafter. The result could have been very different if he catches it.
I watched the Steelers vs Browns last year and there was a play in that game that resulted in a Browns TD that I will NEVER be convinced that the dude didn't take the check.

Man, I dont know. Even when you're running full speed you still attempt to catch that ball again after it doinks off your hands.
I'm confused.... so because of that, his hands wouldn't naturally react to try and get the ball again?
The Steelers safety number 29 on the play didn't even make any ever whatsoever to get the ball and it was literally right in front of him.

Look if he catches the ball the next play would have been the 2 pt conversion. We scored 30 seconds later.then the two point play. Irving catching the ball or not didn’t change the outcome of the game.
Are you talking about the play when Dugger lost track of the ball. A duck that Sanders threw?
First off, Dugger sucks. He's a box safety and has the agility of a middle linebacker playing free safety like he was. Two, there's not a QB in the league other than Sanders who would float a wobbler like that on only a 25 yard pass. I think Dugger didn't want rain in his eyes and he just played the man, not the ball. And that pass was so slow getting there that Dugger just ran on by. Horrible play. No wonder the Pats gave up on him.
Good point. I'm a huge Turner Gill fan. The best overall Husker QB we've ever had. But he slightly under threw both of those passes.
Good point? Good grief. IF he catches the ball and IF we then score the two pt. conversion, does that change the outcome of the game? You guys get that the failed two point conversion, after smith scored, isn’t necessarily what would have happened had he caught the touchdown?
Ok I will play along. If Irving catches the ball the 2pt conversion pass by Turner PROBABLY still gets knocked down by the Miami guy . Is that better.

I mean you are all playing hypothetical games here. Ultimately there’s no way to tell for certain if they would have called the same play call after Fryer caught the ball or not, because he didn’t catch it…

however you have to base this off the whole game up to that dropped pass, now you have one of two options. 1 he catches it, and the game still dictates there is a need for the 2pt conversion. 2 he drops it like he did and the game carries on like it did.
let’s play out option one, he caught the ball. So now what? Based on the game to that point we still need to go for 2. Now from there you have a 50% chance they call that same play va a 50% chance they call virtually any other play to include a PAT and try for onside kick. You break down that 50% chance foto call literally any other play then the odds are still with calling the same play that was called, because that still sits at 50%. And again based on how the flow of the game was and the situation, and having the same play callers, I’d up that percentage more. So yes we never know for certain what the following call would be. But when playing the probabilities it is highly likely that the same play was called, on both sides of the ball and plays out the same way
He was at top speed. His hip may have knocked the ball out of his hands.
When I tell you I was in disbelief when I watched it repeatedly. Like it has to be an investigation done. He CANT be that bad can he. Maybe he is lol..
