Seriously?

Yeah, sure, he’s not really a “Democratic Socialist,” he’s just very progressive to the point Bernie and AOC couldn’t wait to endorse him.

Yeah, sure, he’s not really part of the “Jews will not replace us!” crowd, he’s just not exactly opposed to the idea, either.

And, yeah, sure, he’s not really publicly saying America deserved 9/11, or dressing up as Mao Zedong and praising Zedong as one of the world’s GOAT leaders. No, not at all. He just likes being chummy (and attending pool parties a couple days prior to the primary election) with a popular leftist social media influencer who did say those things. No biggie.

I don’t know if there is anything more Team Blue than working tirelessly to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory months or weeks ahead of an even-numbered year election.

I don’t get it.

Again…seriously?

I have not followed Abdul or Michigan Senate primary.
I did listen to an interview with him yesterday.
As a rhodes scholar doctor the guy is clearly very smart and articulate.
Observers call him a tremendous political athlete.
He connected with voters.
His policy positions are very progressive:
Medicare for all.
Trust- buster like Teddy Roosevelt.
Tax the wealthy
Out of the war.
Money outta politics.

Do you disagree with these stances?
I can agree with all but the Medicare for all.
Is it the Abdul part that concerns you?

I certainly think it is uphill vs rogers who has high name recognition in Michigan.
But would have been the case either way.

Sadly moderates have been conflated with corporate interests even though one can be a moderate and against big corporate special interests (I am).

But in many ways moderates did it to ourselves. We allowed folks with moderate views to stay in office for decades growing more and more dependent on super pac funding. Their greed and desire for the power/trappings of office create this dynamic which is now backfiring on moderate positions. Regardless whether is is correlation or causation, the far left has tightly entwined being moderate with being a corporate stooge.

My big problem is they are solving the wrong problem. The cure for our ills is NOT socialism (or eliminating the senate, eliminating all police, etc). That is not the root cause of the issue. The root cause is human selfishness, greed and power dynamics once reaching office. That does not change under socialist rule, throughout history it has proven to be FAR worse under socialist rule. Instead of thinking the economic system is to blame they should be looking at how to create guardrails on these human failings that come with power.

What we actually need is term limits, better anti-trust laws, new legislation aimed at Citizens United, stronger insider trading laws and the like. Instead we get the DSA platform.

Opponent was a corporate and AIPAC backed empty suit. Who had 60 million spent in her favor (mostly by Republican donors) during the primary and still couldn't win. She would have been a money pit for the DNC during the General.

I am starting to wonder whether or not we would be better off with robotic constitutional and liquidity decisions vs SCOTUS and the FOMC

Wake up, what?

what exactly is “wrong” here? Is something illegal happening? Looks like people exercising their first amendment. I don’t like it like I don’t like Islam but you don’t get to live in a place where it’s your viewpoint 24/7
I’ve got to be honest here . You seem like a humongous phaggot

Rags is waking up? You've missed many other "gems" that democrats have put forward for this election. To re-cap some of the democrat candidates:

1. The Muslim loser OP already shared who celebrated 9/11, mourned the death of the ayatollah and is close friends with radical Hassan piker who also openly celebrates 9/11.

2. A nazi rapist who was ultimately replaced by a dude who had multiple kids with his cousin. (There is something wrong with Maine)

3. A bi-polar woman with a lithium addiction who has been institutionalized

4. A twink in texas who believes there are 6 sexes and spends his free time reportedly thinking about how much he loves trans kids

The democrat party is a joke and it is being taken over in real time. While I love watching chuck schumer end his career in failure (there could be no other way) while his party is taken over by gay communists this is not remotely a good thing for America.

I'll take a bit of a contrarian position here. Or at least maybe contrarian to some.

I don't think there is really any daylight between communists and democratic socialists (the latter is just a label to make themselves sound more European or at least kinda personable like Elaine Benes' one-time boyfriend Ned Isaakoff), and as an old Soviet studies guy who's sorta followed their track record over the arc of history, I'd personally never vote for one.

But...if Michigan D's want to put one up for their candidate, so be it. That is actually democracy. And here, who knows, it might be just the kind of democracy we need, inasmuch as the alternative was a party establishment hack. As I've said elsewhere, what we need less of these days is party establishment hacks. (I will note that it will be amusing to see Dr. El-Sayed suddenly tap into the party and interest group financial networks necessary to running a statewide campaign.) So, perhaps an incremental improvement with at least some incremental diversification of perspectives.
But certainly not the ideal. I recall a recent campaign rally where he proclaimed something about the necessity of standing for something. True enough, I suppose, as Walter Sobchak pointed out so eloquently to the nihilists. And I don't begrudge him for the particular things he believes in or stands for. But it just continues to annoy the hell out of me that no one ever mentions the actual job description -- representation of constituents - as job #1. As always, to lead is to follow.

Baby steps.

both parties were dominated by relative moderates for years...and look where we are now

the GOP has spent the past 10 years undergoing their "revolution" - and there are very few moderates left

now it's the democrats turn.

personally, i try to avoid all the social media-driven narratives and all the attention paid to what some random 26-year old DSA person from Brooklyn said on a podcast. i've never found those to be all that indicative of what will actually happen.

"he's a muslim communist" didn't really land with me when it was said about Obama...and it just doesn't scare me like i guess it should with this guy either.

Ok, on the surface I agree if they're just peacefully exercising their 1A rights, I don't have a problem with that. Welcome to free 'Merica.

My brain shift to assimilation, though...for lack of a better word. When someone chooses to immigrate here and become an American citizen, I think there should be an expectation they embrace America as their home...not try to turn America into an extension of the country they left.

Now, that doesn't mean abandoning your religion, traditions, etc. Like those World Cup commercials kept saying, we all benefit from those things. However, I do think citizenship carries w/ it a responsibility to embrace American civic values and culture...assuming those people in the video are US Citizens. So my issue isn't people praying in public. It's whether people ultimately see themselves as Americans first or as members of a separate society living inside America. Make sense?

Footnote: Okay, don't tin foil hat meme me, and maybe this is just the old intel analyst in me, but anytime I see discussions about political Islam or large Islamic political movements in the West, I can't help but think of the Muslim Brotherhood manifesto. I'm not saying this group has anything to do with the Brotherhood...there's zero evidence of that from this video. Just saying it does pop into my head because one of the Brotherhood's stated long-term objectives is establishing society and governance in the West according to its interpretation of Islamic principles (Sharia). Could you frack'n imagine if we allowed that to happen? While the Dems and Reps fight each other with ZERO compromise, they sneak in and we're screwed.

Trying to legislate according to your religion as a basis would definitely be bad. Agreed. (now I do think people can govern according to their own religious inherent values, hopefully like integrity, loving others, etc)

how - functionally - would we get some surprise version of sharia law in this country all of a sudden?

i just don't understand how this can be considered a rational fear, especially considering muslims make up approximately 1% of the us population and the fact that every religious minority immigrant group faced the same fears (catholics would make us subservient to the pope, jews would make us subservient to israel)

Why would you assume the Muslim brotherhood is not involved here?

Because I don't assume. I was trained assumptions are how you miss the truth. I prefer evidence over innuendo. If there are legitimate, documented ties between Abdul El-Sayed, his family, or his campaign and organizations with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood or other extremist movements, then 100% that needs furhter investigation. But "his father-in-law knew someone who served on a board with someone else" isn't enough for me by itself.

That said, this topic is worth exploring, unlike pretending that <1% of the population is somehow America's greatest existential threat. ;)

These current progressives are more like FDR than anything we have seen in decades. The bulk of the Democratic establishment are neoliberals which are to say they are essentially on the spectrum of free market capitalists. In function in the US a free-market capitalist democrat ends up just being someone that serves the people that give him the most money which leaves regular people unrepresented.

Portions of the Democratic party started moving away from New Deal type politics in the 60s/70s but the Democrats really ceased New Deal politics in 1992 when the Third Way Democrats led by Clinton and other prominent Democrats like Joe Biden. Clinton was willing to sign off on trade deals like NAFTA, permanent normalized trade relations with China, and the Telecommunications Act of 96 which were all bills and agreements Republicans had been crafting since Reagan. You can thank the TCC of 96 for the mass consolidation of media and for Fox News being allowed to exist.

Minus two years under Obama the Democrats have been most ineffective because they either compromised with Republicans or got hindered by people that basically function as controlled opposition like Sinema, Manchin, and Fetterman. Even Obama's crown achievement the ACA was a watered-down health insurance bill that looked suspiciously like Romney's plan.

Unfortunately, it has taken people 30-some years to catch on but the neoliberal/Third Way/ centrist/moderate Democrats do not serve the people, so they had to start listening for people that sound like the politicians that did look out for regular people. So, what we are seeing is the reoccurrence of New Deal type politics to combat the oligarch the nation as succumbed to.

You seriously should not be worried by these politicians. The nation is on the path of a corporate takeover where corporations are considered people and their money speech. The debt is at levels we never saw under the New Deal. Income inequality has surpassed the income inequality of the Gilded Age.

But most importantly, an unoffensive status quo moderate will not be capable of guiding us out of this disaster.
