Here's what I have heard that has been discussed

1. A formal scheduling agreement, which will allow less restrictions on MAIS vs. MHSAA contests. Smaller MAIS schools are desperate to cut down on travel and need to be able to play some MHSAA contests.
2. Rules regarding MAIS-MHSAA and MHSAA-MAIS transfers. Right now there is nothing.
3. Some sort of MHSAA-MAIS showcase in some sports (volleyball, basketball, baseball)

Seems like a reasonable start. What restrictions on MAIS vs MHSAA contests are there now? Seems to me there are always maybe 20 or more of these games per year. The bigger answer to the travel problems in both leagues is they've split them up into way too many classifications and too few divisions in each classification because there's so few teams. If you had 8 divisions in each classification, there'd be a lot less travel problems.

Agreed that we have way too many classifications. I think the Florida plan of having an Open division solves all of it.

MAIS 1A-3A

Top 16 teams regardless of class (Florida uses MaxPreps rankings) go to Open Division Playoff. Then you have class playoffs of remaining teams.

Here's how the MAIS would have looked in the Open Division (and a cool first round matchup)

3 MAIS teams would have made football (Brandon at Jackson Academy in the first round)
2 would have made boys basketball (MRA the No. 2 seed would have had to face Koscisusko, Canton and Columbus)
3 would have made girls basketball (MAIS power Leake Academy traveling to Tish County)
2 would have made volleyball (Eventual 7A runner up Madison Central traveling to tiny power Ingomar in the first round)
5 would have made baseball (Magnolia Heights the No. 1 seed)

It fixes high school sports in Mississippi and creates a really cool playoff environment

My children's school is having to travel to West Memphis for a regular season volleyball match. That's a bit ridiculous.

It seems that the influence that sports has on higher ed is going to continue to push down into high school. How long until we have K-5 dodgeball recruiting? Red rover?

Agree. Adding that championship division does 2 things, if done fairly:

- Separates the huge schools in 7A from the smaller end of 6A in the postseason;
- Separates the dominant MAIS schools from the smaller ones (same concept as above) in the postseason.

Now again, has to be done fairly. I could see the MAIS Big 4 sandbagging so they can beat up on the smaller MAIS and claim "wEnT tO mUh sTaTe!!!!!111"

Agree. Adding that championship division does 2 things, if done fairly:

Call the class champions class champions and only refer to the Open champion as the state champion. Point and laugh at people who refer to non Open champions as state champions. Shame them on social media.

Florida Using max preps to rank teams for a playoff is one of the dumbest things I’ve seen.

They could come up with something. MaxPreps uses an RPI-type formula. Schedule and beat a better team = more points. It would improve scheduling in that regard.

Id much rather have an argument between who deserves the final spot in the Open playoffs between Louisville (eventual MHSAA 4A runner up) and Hartfield (eventual MAIS 4A runner up) than the BS we have now.

Are there actually any segregated private schools left in Mississippi? Even the Delta academies have black kids now.
