Previewing the Golden Gophers

The Minnesota game in Week 2 is bigger than a non-conference game should be. Its a game against a solid Big Ten team that is winnable. Win it, and maybe we can make a run at a respectable season. Lose it, and we have to bounce back in the next two. Lose it big, and its going to be a long season.

Things you may not know:

Minnesota has the longest bowl winning streak in the nation. They have won 8 straight bowl games.
Minnesota went undefeated at home last year (7-0)
Last time Minnesota played a home game against a non-conference Power 4? UNC won 19-17 in 2024 to open the season

The Gophers open the season against FCS Eastern Illinois, so they will not be tested. There are high hopes for a big season at Minnesota this year. They avoid Ohio State and Oregon and they have Michigan at home. They have a trip to Indiana, but otherwise their schedule is very manageable.

They have a returning starter at QB. Lindsey had an encouraging debut season, all things considered. He finished with a 126.9 NCAA passer rating, a little less than one standard deviation below median, though on what was a highly excessive volume of short passing play calls, an unproductive receiver corps, and shaky protection especially on the right side of the line. He’s got great size, clearly capable of throwing deep with accuracy and has an unproblematic throwing motion. The only real limitation – other than the offense he’s operating in – is that he doesn’t have top level escapability and isn’t a serious threat in the designed run game, though he’s not a complete statue. Typically that works well for a Zac Arnett defense.

Taylor is a solid RB that has dealt with some injuries. He will be their starter and workhorse, but after a breakout freshman year, he's not been as productive. Minnesota might have a weaker offensive line than Mississippi State, so I expect us to be aggressive.

The receiving corps for Minnesota is anyone's guess. Its all new faces. They have a new WR coach as well. Jennings from Cincinnati is a good transfer but after that, not a lot to look at.

Minnesota is formidable on the defensive side of the ball, but tends to give up big plays both in passing and rushing. They run a 4-2-5 and their strength is the defensive line, but they lost their DL coach and four seniors from last year so there could be a new scheme. They do have some returners at DE so expect a lot of blitzes to try to keep Kamario in check.

Minnesota played 9% of their pass coverages in zone and 17% in man. The rest in Cover-1. This is a very high stress posture that demands the pass rush gets home fast and the coverage holds up on islands, preferably both, because there’s effectively no over-the-top safety support. If Kamario can hit his receivers, there could be the opportunity for big plays.

Preseason wool and looking at the actual data has caused me to move this game from a tight loss to a probable win. We're better than they are.

That was my primary concern for our defense this year...how many teams we'll face whose QB can take to the house on a scramble. I feel better about Minnesota after having read that. Also most preseason projections have them finishing 9th or 10th in an 18 team league.

In my mind this is a must win game.

My AI analysis says Minnesota would be a dog to South Carolina but a slight favorite over Vandy this season in neutral fields.

Good defensive team, not great offensively although they did have a freshman QB last year. Fleck has very much been a Mullen type for them. They beat bad teams and mostly lose to good teams. Don’t know which we are yet.

I think that Minnesota will have a good, solid defense and a good offensive line, but team speed, especially at receiver, will be our distinct advantage.

Minnesota is 22-23 in the Big over the past five years, would be a disgrace for an SEC team to lose to the Gophers

It’s hard for me to stick my nose up at a .500 Big 10 team when we are 2-22 in the SEC the last three years and if I’m not mistaken, 18 of the 22 losses were by double digits.

We haven’t beaten a decent team on the road since Leach was our coach. I’m gonna have to see it to believe it with us after the last few years.

And their 2025 wins were over a Combined FBS record: 29-44 (.397). Best regular-season win? 7-6 Nebraska. They didn't beat a single regular-season team that finished above .500 FBS. An 8-5 record that was built largely against the lower half of the Big Ten and a manageable nonconference slate. They got drilled by anyone that mattered. But not bad for a team with an F+ report card.

Do not worry guys Mr. 77 will be here soon to explain in detail how Minnesota really sucks, and that it will be an easy win. I am so excited to read his take on this.
Thanks for the mention oh dark one. I have my thoughts but I’d rather wait til I see a few practices/scrimages. I’m very excited about this team going into fall camp

Our wins last year were 20-30. Best win 8-5 Arizona st. Only other P4 win 2-10 Arkansas.

Someone nailed it. Fleck is their Mullen. They are doing good enough to stay happy but aren't going to win the B1G anytime soon. Its a winnable game for us, but I suspect we will be a 5 point underdog.

The more I look at our schedule, it seems like the hill grows higher to climb.

Although my wool is filling in nicely, as much as I want a 4-0 start/...... it won't be easy.

Come on now. You are holding your thoughts back? Since when?
I really like this team. I have said before we have a great chance to start out 4-0. Not sure I’m holding back at all. Those that being negative haven’t kept up with our roster and coaching staff.

Two things can be true. I was waiting to post this^^ when someone on the Gophers board claimed State was a "solid team" on the Mississippi State Bulldogs Preview thread. That said, we did actually beat a team that had a +.500 FBS record. And completely suffocated the great Sam Levitt (10/22 82 YDS 1 TD a 2 Pix) one year removed from the CFP. But yea, I also agree that we sucked too.

I am just saying holding back your thoughts seems to be a non-issue for you. At least up until now. I was expecting an in-depth dive into MN versus Lebs. Kind of let down honestly. I was fully expecting to have at least a few reasons I could point to and say see Minnesota really sucks. Kind of a buzz kill on this one, no offense.

It’s game two we just opened camp today. Let’s get a littler closer but I’ll say this. Minn isn’t a world beater. They might have a worse OL than we had last year. They have a statue as a QB an often injured RB, they graduated a lot of the DL except for the DE. WR and corners are non issues. I could see us up big early in the game like KState 2018

What’s the other side of the coin? Just curious. This is a great quick analysis of their weaknesses. What are our weaknesses?

I really like our starting 22. K1 is. A. Freak but just like with any young QB going to be moments of brilliance and some of “gotta make that play”. I think we have 7 or 8 solid OL so depth is always an issues. Need a young one to step up for sure for depth.
TE is young and inexperienced but.. I like the talent. RB is really good. WR needs no explanation. Love our DL and depth there but need Whitson to stay healthy and need A William live up to the hype. LBs eat in the ZA scheme. And we have some guys at LB. But.. sort of need guys like Rice and Fatt to step up for depth. I have zero concerns at safty and corner

We’re 9-30 in the SEC in the last 5 years. Thanks to 8-8 in Leach last 2 seasons. I think this is a game we have a realistic chance to win. But in no way do I think we’re favorites to win.
Minnesota fans say this is a great chance to beat a SEC team.
They are writing it in as a W
State fans are thinking we should beat a middle of the pack Big 10 team.
I’m going to MN but I just don’t see us winning this game.

When’s the last time we beat Iowa?
Iowa was about one missed field goal with under two minutes left of beating both Oregon and IU last year. They were about the toughest 9-4 team you’re going to see. It’s not really an upset they manhandled Vandy.

Great analysis of our strengths. I was asking for our weaknesses though? It is hard to believe that a team with our record over the past few years is not going to have some significant weaknesses. Give me 3 areas in which we are likely to struggle to ask more specifically. I love your thoughts, but I do think we need to be brutally honest about where we will struggle. The reason I am asking is if you seem to be able to have the information to effectively judge where we might struggle. One thing I have learned in 20 years of coaching high school ball is that you are always going to have that backside tackle struggle to get his head across in a zone scheme, or the front side guard doesn't understand slide protection ending up on the linebacker. I have found that you spend way more time finding weaknesses than you do strengths.

I pretty much pointed out that our weakness will be. Youth at QB. Depth at OL past the top 7. depth at LB and depth and inexperience behind fluff at RB
We have closed the gap from a talent standpoint on the 22 but still lack depth in other areas. Until I see practice/scrimages I will have to defer where exactly those weakness are. But today based on spring summer and what I learned from chats yesterday. We have really improved as a team from talent size and coaching

I tend to agree here so that tells me we could be anywhere from a competitive 4-8 to a paper 8-4 depending on schedule. 2012 comes to mind when we were soft up the middle but had a stout secondary. We all thought we were good due to We Believe but got exposed quickly.

Still concerned that Taylor doesn't fit Lenny and that Lenny's offense exposes Arnett, and they are tired by end of game. We'll see but I'm a little more hopeful than before for at least a competitive team. I just hate that we are stuck with Salmon and Heavy because we simply aren't designed to ever contend for the playoff, which is the point of all this. 17 a bowl game and muh provement, this isn't 2017 anymore.

We do this every time. Oh it’s a Big 12, PAC-12, Big 10 team. We should win easily. Then we split every time. Usually winning at home & losing in the road. Either we’re not as good as we think we are or they’re better than we think they are. Probably some of both.

How can you be this ignorant about a schools you are a so called fan of. RG3 was in this offense. Matt Corall and D Gabriel I think you feel that cause Taylor can run his more Cam when in the actual truth he’s a thrower then runner. You just have zero clue about anything it would continue to appear
