At the time, we were all grasping at straws to try to slow the spread of COVID. I hated wearing a mask but I did it because as someone who is trained in epidemiology I know that a properly worn surgical quality mask will reduce exposure risk. My personal health vulnerabilities made it logical to use one. The mask mandates in schools etc were ridiculous and did nothing to reduce risk for kids. The cloth homemade masks were a joke and probably harmful to their health. Fauci took mask wearing to a religious level.

She never got COVID until this past year until right after she moved in to assisted living. Then even though EVERYBODY in the facility had been exposed with most of them testing positive, they locked them in their f’n apartments.

Anecdotal stories are nice and dandy but public health emergencies suck. Is public health important? Do people live longer now than 300 years ago because of public health interventions? Do you still have a 1/7 chance of dying from Tuberculosis or small pox or cholera? Do millions of people in AMerica still die from AIDS? Is cancer still a death sentence? Literally 7/8 people are alive today because of public health initiatives, logistics, food safety. These people in the link are burning down a facility that was the best chance to save people because they wanted to be close to family. Social distancing is by the far the right thing to do to save lives as a collective society...it still is...we could probably save 10-15k a year if people wore masks when they had influenza or covid.
Your 90 year old mil might also be alive because people tried not to get sick, she might have had more time instead of just immediately dying because of some random illness.

I’m trained in epidemiology and have a doctorate in a medical field. My wife and 2 of her brothers are MDs. I have more than anecdotal stories.

The bottom line is that Fauci is a lying sack of shid who destroyed public trust. Giving China’s bioweapons lab funding and more importantly THE TECHNOLOGY to carry out GOF research was traitorous. His policies were something we could expect from a totalitarian state.
That said, it’s extremely difficult to quantify the cost/benefit ration of the vaccines. Pfizer’s seems to have had little benefit compared to the number of adverse reactions. The other oddball was pulled almost immediately due to its adverse event rates. Moderna’s most feared mRNA product was actually probably the safest but still problematic. My contention is that in fact it did produce the best cost versus benefit ration but unfortunately the cost involved some people losing their lives.

I will note our area teachers lobbied to stay open after the initial closures. Shutting things down initially that first spring was probably logical similar to what they do for the flu. Keeping it shutdown was ludicrous. I asked a teacher if they knew of any teachers who were actually ill with COVID and then said even the ones who tested positive didn’t have anything more than mild cold symptoms. Teachers have so much natural immunity to Corona viruses.

They went online in the spring then went in person with optional online that first fall. The online was a mess according to a couple of teachers I talked to. 90% of kids don’t give a sh## and teachers were raked over the coals by administrators for refusing to pass kids who didn’t do the online work.

The big city shutdowns during the later waves was weird and dangerous. Large urban families living in close quarters are at high risk for high viral loads and worse symptoms on top of having more co-morbidities but the adults from these families went to work during the pandemic and therefore were exposed anyway. The kids just stayed home and got dumber. That was the disconnect. Just because you keep kids home doesn't mean people weren't bringing virus home with them everyday.
I also don't think people fully understood the role of education in just baby-sitting kids and keeping them from being abused or hurt, keeping them fed, and socially engaged. I think a lot of people thought the school system was garbage until it shutdown and realized it actually fulfills a lot of roles outside of just teaching some kids some stuff they will never use.
I do find it convenient that the same people who want to defund urban public schools, want more choice, and want to strip away tax payer dollars from the poorest parts of cities so wealthier people have lower taxes, are the same people who are now so worried about school being shutdown, about urban kids losing learning...you guys didn't care if urban kids learned a thing, or become empowered until you can use it as a complaint about city leadership.

I just remembered the first days. Was on a site and had to sign a form that said whether or not you have Covid 19. Ha! There was literally no test. The Mexican drywallers all showed up one day. Rolling 30 deep in 3 vehicles. No masks, none of them spoke a lick of English. The GC asked them to sign the form. They literally smiled and put an “x” on the line every day. At times I’m around quite a few people that speak little English. It was legit hilarious to see the mask Nazis pretend like they weren’t there, while making sure all of us crackers were masked up.
Then came the thermometers. I think my personal lowest (on those absolutely laser accurate devices) was like 91.3. Then I think my high was around 108.7.
You have literally no info. They knew masks were no good, and even detrimental to overall health. A simple Google search at the start of covid would have revealed two comprehensive studies on masks done in the decade before. Simple should be right up your alley. Nobody had studied a novel coronavirus. It spreads in larger droplets and requires a larger viral load than pandemic influenza. Masks have been worn for decades by less "independent" societies and have been shown to be a great public health intervention to protect vulnerable populations from high viral loads and hospitalization. There is still not a situation where a barrier against viral load will not be beneficial. The job of the virus is to invade your body, breathing in large droplets of virus is going to be a negative, regardless of if the mask protects against all droplets. The difference between life and death in most pandemic, epidemic situations comes down to initial viral load. We live in a culture which value independence and firdom, this is great but it has consequences. America is a world leader in overdoses, gun violence, and incarceration, and were up there in covid deaths.
A simple google search will also tell me the world is flat and Matt Rhule is a good coach. Go read some studies and get some education. Oh wait, you don't trust those either.

They aren't novel if they have been studied for decades. You can't study mask efficacy when the population has immunity and the last pandemic coronavirus was from 200 years ago. Even so, a barrier to droplets is better than none for any virus which is shed in respiratory droplets. Even if the virus can pass through the mask. Do masks stop the pandemic? Hell no. Do they protect in some situations against high viral loads in close contact environments? Yes. Do they suck to wear and make people look like idiots? Yes. Americans choose comfort over health all of the time..hence the obesity, diabetes, overdoses.
I gather that your argument is that the sacrifices we have to make "social distancing", "mask wearing", "vaccine taking" just isn't worth the squeeze. These things may help, but not enough to justify the sacrifices that people have to make. That is a different argument than your sheep friends are making, where they basically invalidate the use of these well established public health measures. Saying something isn't worth the sacrifice is different than saying it doesn't work. This is important because you know there will be a pandemic that kills young people by the millions and vaccines, masks, and social distancing will protect the fabric of society from collapse. It is a very different story when the average death is a 32 year old versus an 80 year old.

White guys with masks had a hospitalization rate 4x less than unmasked guys. I wonder why? And yes people should have cared about undocumented workers in factories and fields and work sites still pumping out hotdogs, building houses, and picking produce. But people also suck.
Explain to me how masks can be helpful in ANY situation. Especially given the fact that people re-use them, get their dirty hands all over them, and tend to pull them below their nose. And, of course social distancing would work if we all just stayed in our homes. Bye, bye economy, though.
