Going to see The Odyssey Saturday in IMAX. I’ll report back. Really want to go to King of Prussia Regal with the 70mm IMAX version but initial shows have limited seats and only up front. They even have showings at 2:40 am!! If it’s awesome, may take the drive there in the near future. Only two east coast theaters have the 70mm capacity, KOP Regal and AMC Lincoln Square in Manhattan.
Lucky duck! Hoping to check out at Alamo when I can; don't get a lot of free time but may take the afternoon off for this. Can't wait!
As an aside, have found it really, really difficult to sit and watch a film (unless I'm really hyped for it) lately. Maybe just too much good TV? Dunno. But, on the flight back from Hawaii I re-watched Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as opposed to watching any new films save one - Rental Family starring Brendan Fraser. It's a familiar trope for a film - aging American actor (or sometimes athlete) moves to Japan and struggles to get meaningful work, but this has a near Charlie Kaufman-esque twist that finds our star hired by a company that 'rents' actors to appear in various real life situations for people (appear at a funeral, pose as a journalist, act as a jaded lover, etc.). It's not a mindbending as a Kaufman film, but I was surprised at the depth and emotion of the film once Fraser's character settles into a couple of really difficult assignments. Don't have the energy for a full review, but Fraser was really good in this and plays his part really well - just a likeable guy who wants to help people. Give it a chance if you have the opportunity.
I watched APEX on Netflix last night Charlize Theron drew me in. There is some great scenery (though not of Charlize) and some good action if you like mountain climbing or White water kayaking. But you have Charlize in the Australian outback by her self what could go wrong ? please note there are cross bows involved.
Just got back from The Odyssey. Blown away by it. Just awe inspiring and a visual treat. IMO, will be one of the all time great films. What Nolan does with the visuals and expansiveness of this film is tremendous. Now I want to get to King of Prussia to see it in the 70mm IMAX version. IMAX alone was spectacular. Don’t listen to any pundits or critics, just go experience it for yourself. Nolan has done it again and it may be his finest.
Love hearing this! Also, will be a big box office success - Nolan’s biggest worldwide opening to date. Can’t wait to see it!

Interesting article. Glad I read it as I’m seeing the movie tomorrow. Who really cares, it’s a friggin masterpiece of a movie that has some of the most memorable scenes you will ever want to see in a theater. Go see it in IMAX too, don’t go to a regular theater, it was shot totally for IMAX. This is the problem with social media and the old motto about

Nolan didn’t base the film on Homer’s version.
Just enjoy the movie and don’t go in with preconceived expectations or you will not enjoy one helluva film experience.
Who gives a crap what this person thinks. The Walking Dead comparison, holy s***!!!. This is the issue with our world now with these a**holes who wouldn’t know what a great film is if it bit them in the a**. Just rage baiting bs
The Odyssey is simply a staggering filmmaking accomplishment. Visually stunning with a mesmerizing score. I could quibble on a few of the performances, Holland, in particular was unimpressive, but it's an astounding film that perhaps only Nolan could have pulled off. Run to see it and DEFINITELY see it in IMAX!

Back from The Odyssey. Adaptation A-, Overall Movie a very high A, not an A+.
For those who haven’t read the poem this would be an A+ adaptation. Twenty years from now this will be the primary way people remember The Odyssey, that’s fine. Hard to see how Nolan could have done a better job. I’ve read it three times, most recently earlier this year.
I’m visiting Greece this coming October and I’ve been reading up. Whether or not there was a Trojan War, there was a Troy that collapsed at around 1250 BC, thereabouts, and right about this time there was 300 or so years of the Greek Dark Ages. It’s been hypothesized that there were some kinds of warrior gangs that destroyed that civilization, they are called the Sea Peoples. Who they are nobody knows but in the movie Nolan makes it out to be that the Sea Peoples could be the Greeks who fought at Troy for ten years and brought their warrior mentality back to the Greek mainland. Very clever. Not original with Nolan but to put that in the movie, attaboy, works very well and impactfully.
Nolan made a lot of choices that I’m mostly fine with. He doesn’t mention that Helen’s father was Zeus, and instead makes Clytemnestra her twin sister. (They were half sisters; Clytemnestra had a mortal father.) How this ties into the whole package is something to ponder.
The ending is different from what’s in the poem but makes perfect sense and doesn’t detract from the story in any way.
The Calypso scenes work very well, no worries there. If you wanted to believe that Calypso was jumping Odysseus every night, it wouldn’t be a reach. The Circe scenes are damn good.
No disappointments.

People whine because it is an adaption of a work of fiction with which they do not agree. I can understand if it is a movie that purports to be historical and is inaccurate (cough, cough "Napoleon"), but this is just complaints from people who are incapable of enjoying what is. They live to complain.

People were complaining about it not being accurate to her books, problem is very few of those people read the books and just thought the TV series was accurate...it wasn't.

We are experiencing technical issues with our 70MM IMAX film projector. Regal and IMAX technicians are working around the clock to restore functionality. In the meantime, The Odyssey will be presented in IMAX Laser.
So imax is 20-25 bucks per person. Omg no wonder it is breaking records.

Tuesdays is a deal for $10.99 and senior price is $15.99. IMAX theater.
Gate receipts was always a stupid metric for measuring and comparing a movie’s success/popularity. Tickets sold should have always been the metric.
That is crazy. Times 5 plus food. 125 bucks for. Movie. No way.

Check to see if Agamemnon walks on a purple carpet to his doom. Thanks. The story of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra as shown in the movie is taken from the Orestes Trilogy by Aeschylus, and is different than what is found in Homer. (I got no issue with this switch.) Walking on Purple Carpets is something reserved for the Gods, it’s very bad juju for Agamemnon to walk on them, Clytemnestra was covering her bases there. (I’m not usually this hoity-toity but I’m going to Greece soon and I’m doing my reading.)
