Clay Travis challenge to WNBA: a WNBA game even I would watch

He has offered $10 million to have a WNBA team champions Aces (or WNBA all-star team) play against a boy's high school state champion of his choosing.

If the WNBA team wins, they get the $10 million. If the boy's team wins, they get the $10 million.

Game would be broadcast on PPV with all proceeds going to Tunnels to Towers.

I don't know how serious he is, since no WNBA team would dare take this challenge. They would get absolutely blown off the floor. BUT, I'd pay to watch that game.

This sounds familiar. I think someone made this challenge to the wnba before. Or something similar.

Yeah he offered a million bucks a few years ago.

It's not a serious proposal and can't be accepted by the WNBA. If they win, that's what they're supposed to do. If they lose, that would be a PR disaster.

There is no scenario where they win. But I bet it would be the most watched WNBA game ever.

But, yeah, obviously it can't happen. I think it just highlights what we all know.

He has also offered to buy/fund a WNBA expansion team in Nashville and make it 100% trans.

The WNBA could win if the officials alllowed pro physicallity. But they would probably use HS standards and the women would all foul out in the 1st quarter. BTW - the first boy who got knocked down would go crying to mama and the game would be stopped.

I wonder just how much money it would take to get the WNBA to bite. If you tell the WNBA all-star players they get to split $50m for a win, I'm sure that would get most of the players' attention.

Of course, there's no way they would beat a state champion boys HS team, so the amount of money probably doesn't matter.

LOL; a team of 18 yr old males would physically dominate any WNBA team, no matter what rules they played by. If the officials allowed pro physicality, the boys would manhandle any WNBA team. The only hope the WNBA team would have would be if the officials called every ticky tack foul on the boys and they all fouled out.

I would pay to see that.

I might as well. It could be funny.

But this has already been done on the soccer field, and it ended up just as you would expect.

Maybe the more widespread audience that would be attracted to a basketball version might work in highlighting the absurdity.

Why not propose they play our women's team? or a college team?

Is the purpose to humiliate the women's team while also proclaiming "let's save women's sports?"

Is there a movement out there that runs around saying the women's teams in the WBNA or college can beat men's teams or really good high school teams? I've never heard that being a topic of serious discussion.

Interesting that even a "men can get pregnant" supporter admits playing a men's team would be humiliating for the women.

And no, Tree, there isn't a movement out there saying directly that a wnba tram can beat a men's team. There IS a movement saying that men should be able to play in women's sports.

You know this, we know this. It is not a good look for you to pretend you dont see the correlation. I would say you're playing dumb just to try and make a political argument, but I've seen too many of your posts.

I agree with ya'll that the high school team would win but why does he it matter to you?

You dont see any connection between professional women not being able to compete with highschool boys, and the current push to allow men into women's sports?

No but to be honest, I haven't followed it closely. I know ya'll consider me a liberal but 90% of the time I agree with the conservatives, including this issue.

Okay, just to be clear. You dont see any correlation between discussing if men should play women's sports, and the discussion that full grown professional women would lose against highschool boys?

This post seemed unusually honest, so ill reciprocate.

If full grown professional women cant compete against highschool boys, how unfair would it be for a grown man to play against those women?

Again, I haven't really thought about it but I guess there is a correlation. I don't agree with what the democrats are pushing in sports but I didn't understand this thread to be political. I honestly thought you all were just pumping your chest because high school boys could beat professional girls.

I'm assuming the last question is rhetorical, because we agree.

Understand completely. Unfortunately, that sort of thing can happen when topics float from thread to thread. Imo, none of this was petty chest pumping, but joking about the silliness of the situation politics has pushed some people into.

I have athletes of both sexes as children. I dont take joy in my son's being bigger and stronger. I feel strongly that my daughter shouldn't be going up against boys. She did when they were really young, but by middle school, there was no real competition. And it became a safety issue. (And to a lesser degree, an unfair competitive advantage issue.)

Understand completely. Unfortunately, this topic is political now. And with all things political, there is no common ground or common sense to be had concerning it.

I have all boys. The oldest plays D1 baseball. The others are in high school. I played basketball in college as did my sister. She was Miss Ohio back in the day, in her colleges HOF and played against Dawn Staley in college. She was a much better female player than I was a male player. I'm telling you this because there is no comparison between boys and girls in basketball. It's not even close when we would play each other.

That said, i have played tennis most of my adult life. I play at a 4.5 level. There are girls that can hang with the boys and I very much doubt a high school champion could beat a top, professional ladies player.

I agree it becomes a safety issue in some sports at the middle school level. I coach a high school team. Rarely will I allow a female to practice against my boys, but i have made exceptions for the right female athlete.

That's great. I played tennis in high school. I was ok- probably the 3rd best player on our team. When I was in college, I got to know a girl that also played high school tennis. She told me she was considered the 2nd best tennis player in her conference in high school. I could only go on her word as I had no idea.

We both found out we were still playing 2-3 times a week even in college when we were both freshman.

We played down at the courts outside the PE center on the USC campus 3 or 4 times. She beat me rather easily each time- although the last time we played it was close.

I was pretty bummed about it to be honest. I was faster, I was much stronger, but she had better touch than I did and her serve was more consistent in that she didn't make mistakes with her serve like I would because I could serve faster and would get lulled into trying to hit my 2nd serve faster than I should have and would screw that up too much. She didn't have a lot of pace on her shots though but she knew it.

It doesn't really mean anything but I also would play pick up tennis with two attorneys down at the courts that would show up in the evenings who were better players than I was but I always got a boost of confidence playing them because they both would tell me they thought I was a decent player for a college kid who was just bumming around at the courts.

Anyway, she smartly would mainly play defense against me until I made a mistake and that was her game with people that were faster than her. She would also serve and volley -and she was the only player I had ever played that would do that and I had real problems being pressured to try to hit a passing shot.

I got a better idea. Let Lurker or 18 play a WNBA player 1 v 1 since they are so invested in this issue. Don't hide behind a man that can actually play basketball. That's like South Carolina fans chanting SEC when Alabama or Georgia win a big game.

I still can't figure out the purpose of such a proposal.

It seems to be to humiliate the women's pro teams. I mean they aren't out there campaigning that they can beat men or high school teams or college teams or anyone else.

and why just offer it to a WNBA team? Why not South Carolina? They can' accept money. So why not offer it to one of the top college teams first?

Sounds like an offer made by a man with more money than sense.

A'ja Wilson has said that she can beat some NBA players one on one.

We love A'ja but that's BS.

The offer from Clay Travis is great because it shuts up the WNBA.

I'd love to watch our women's team in a live scrimmage against the young men they practice against.

After reading some of these post again (I am not referring to you), i'm 99% certain most of these post aren't coming from a political / transgender angle. They are simply pumping their chest because they are guys. They are celebrating that men are bigger and stronger than women, and it gives them a reason to bash women. Sad, sad, sad.

I have witnessed 18 bash women's sports on this forum many times. He certainly has small penis syndrome.

Coming from Al Bundy, who brags that his sports peak was 2A highschool basketball? Talk about irony.

This has been answered, but you're hiding from it.

If you want to claim its okay for men to play in women's sports, then put them on the court together and see how mismatched they really are.

I disagree, but oh well. They/we are harping on men being bigger and stronger because of the way some people want to argue a man can be a woman if he just feels like it. And that he should be allowed to play with the women.

Then there's the "equal pay" complaining that sets people off. The two arent equal on the court, in the amount of viewers, etc.

I've seen his posts too. I completely buy that its because of this, or the equal pay, or the wnba having to survive solely on the back of the nba.

But neither of us is his shrink. So I cant be positive. :)

I'm deeply involved in sports. I do care about the transgender issue because it impacts kids.

Why do you even care about equal pay? How does it impact you or anyone around you? It has zero impact on me or my family. It doesn't impact which sports i watch or don't watch. If they get the money, great. If they don't, fine also. Seems like a "karen" issue ro me.

Girls get the same pay in tennis majors when they play best of 3 sets vs 5 for men's. Who cares outside of the players?

I would care a LOT less about the trans issue if it didn't involve the kids at all.

We, all of us, discuss a lot of things that dont impact us directly. I dont think you need to be an NBA or WNBA player to have an opinion on comparing the financials of the two leagues.

I also think its a huge cop out to try and tell someone what they can and cant have an opinion on.

Okay, or it could be that. :)

It probably wouldn't be if not for people constantly preaching how great the WNBA is and that they are as good as men and them wearing shirts saying "pay us what you owe us" and crap like that. If not for that, I really wouldn't care. Like the USWNT. I actually liked them (as much as I like soccer) and rooted for them until they got all militant and demanded equality with the USMNT.

Of course it's ok to have an opinion on it.

If they just equal pay b/c that's what owners/management want to do, then fine. But THEY (the women) make these things social issues. I almost never speak of these issues b/c I care about the sport. I care about the bigger implications.

I guess i'm wired a little bit differently. I simply don't want to put time and energy in things that have very little impact on 99.99% of the people. I'll let you and 18 fight against equal pay for the WNBA, given that ya'll have the time and energy to fight this fight.

Surely you understand there's a difference in fighting against an issue and talking about an issue.

You said you're not a liberal, but you're running Page 1 from the Liberal Playbook: "why do you even care?"

Liberals: thrust an issue into the national spotlight
Conservatives: talk about that issue
Liberals: why do you even care?!?

It's worth talking about b/c I care about truth and the growing social belief that people deserve things they didn't earn.

Ha, you beat me to it. I was going to propose that if people really thought it didn't impact them, why are they posting about it in response.

I will just say, I think your comment is ovestimating the energy to "fight". This is literally just posting on an anonymous message board. Today's equivalent of water cooler banter, imo. I dont consider it to be much effort at all, and I certainly dont think it impacts anything.
