Let me back track. If you workout and do cardio it does not matter if you inject a needle prior to these workouts. If you inject it, the muscle will come.

Joking aside (I think lol) I have always been told and read that if you do too much cardio while trying to bulk it has an adverse effect. Obviously, every person is different and your goals are a major factor. I come from a boxing family and have a son into MMA so cardio is a big deal. I just do not make it a priority for myself with what I am trying to accomplish.

Yep it is very hard to raise everything at one time. Which is why a football player shouldn't train like a marathon runner or a body builder. Olympic and power lifting style training with sprints and jumps is the way to go.

Your body composition I’m guessing is much leaner than I currently am. I started at 260lbs and started learning about body recomp. I started fasting and added more gym as time went by. I’m now at 193 but have added much more muscle than I’ve probably ever had. I warm up on the elliptical but that’s about it. Hitting the heavy bag at home is the majority of my cardio. lol

Yes, gassers have to be mental conditioning because they adversely work for other football training.

I’m not an expert but have trained for various different fitness activities and lifestyles over the years as interest has carried me. I distance and trail raced, regionally competitively for a while and ran my guts out but felt great. I was a natural sprinter learning to carry my speed for distance not a distance guy learning to create speed. Logged 75-80 mile running weeks consistently with 2-days of sprint work . Weighed 20lbs less than my muscular high school build and competed in the high 160s-low 170s. Definitely not an ideal football build for my body.

Worked on strength, strength, strength and bulked to 215-220 but it was just tons of weights. Strong but lost speed and mobility. Added in 1-2 days weekly of heavy sprint training and saw great results and leg growth and acceleration but still not ideal power to speed ratio you’d like for my potential and building a football build.

Built myself a 3-pronged metric that seemed to really hone in my body’s ā€œpotentialā€ for that point in my life in my late 30s. Focused on explosion and strength and gave myself the following parameters achieved through CrossFit, circuit training and strength trading blended workouts with some sprint work still involved.

1. Keep my mile time sub-5 minutes (PR was 4:28 in younger years so this wasn’t max-speed but a goal not to exceed)

2. Bench press. Must remain above 300 for clean 2 reps. Never wanted to go for failure

3. Deadlift. No less than 415 for 6 reps

If I kept all goals, hitting each metric I felt I had a very good strength to weight balance and would typically weigh 195-205. Sometimes I’d get too ā€œstrongā€ and get slow and others too ā€œfastā€ and get weak but in the middle of all these would be a great football playing condition for my age. I think somewhere similar to this would be great place to start for your high school skill position players (obviously adjust #s per the individual) and measure these similar metrics but maybe swap the mile time for a 400. You wouldn’t be shooting for a world class 400 runner but a highly respectable number. I think you’d find with the right nutrition a lot of them would land at a nice ā€œsweet spotā€ for power, strength, body weight, and overall fitness.

Sorry for the essay, I struggle with being too wordy. 😁

The way it was explained to me was excessive cardio can burn muscle. I eat my weight in protein daily and take 8g of Creatine. Thats it’s as far as my ā€œplanā€. My goal was just tone and replace the flab. Good numbers at the doctor so that’s always a plus at my age. lol

I try to get 250 g of protein a day. I try my best to stay under 100 grams carbs a day. A lot of times it's 50 g or less. No of course I have days work I don't meet that goal where I eat junk. I'm actually trying to cut back some of my weight right now. Not much though. Cardio after a lift can adversely affect your gains. That's why I do cardio before I lift. Plus cardio before it gets you loosened up and the blood flowing. Plus I want to be that weird guy that you don't see very often that can lift super heavyweight and also run long distances. Because usually it's one or the other you see these big guys that live very heavy weight but don't have any stamina or you see these really small skinny guys with a lot of stamina but can't lift much of anything.

Agree completely. That is why the heavy bag is a must. The stamina is built whether you like it or not. I also get beat up with the focus mitts and pads by a 14 year old. lol

I know that this is a football thread but I’ll add that some kids are better track/ cross country runners than they’d realize if they trained for it and shed the heft they keep for football bodies.

I ran/trained with a guy for a while, post-college, that had played football all his life but got injured his sophomore year of high school with an injury that was recommended he not risk it in football anymore. He was a fast guy with good discipline so he turned to track. Got a great scholarship to a (now-called)power 4 school, became a collegiate All-American runner, and when I was running with him he was a 13:45-14:00 5k guy that had a couple shoe deals as nice supplemental income. Without the injury, he probably never builds the body to do any of this before high school ends, at least not at the level he did.

Bandy's new QB couldn't make it through the blockade got his engine room blown up. Heard he's rowing back the other way now 🤣. If I was Mason (current QB) I'd be telling everyone kiss my *** 🤣🤣. Probably gonna take a new john Deere and a couple goats to make up for this

ā€œA fireworks show?ā€ Oh, hey! I wouldn’t take it too hard, could certainly be worse. Remember hearing about this lady named Miss Havisham. She was schedule to get married at 9 AM, but her fiancĆ© notified her at 8:40 AM, that he would be a no-show.

In response, she went around through this big mansion that she lived in and set all the clocks at 8:40 AM then stopped them so they would always show that time. They stayed that way for the rest of her life.

Actually, I’m thinking this might have happened in Maiden, well, maybe not, probably in England. The Takeaway here is it could certainly be worse. Think about it. What if you were Miss Havisham?

Never met Miss Havisham...but that girl she adopted, Estrella, I've definitely met her. You can develop such Great Expectations when you meet a gal like that, so great in fact it turns your love into a fearful one, enough to scare the Dickens out of you.

**If I were Miss Havisham, there would be a lot I think I would do, but first , I think I would do the dishes.
