A reminder to some that ND sought to join the B1G about 100 years ago but were turned down because they were a Catholic school.
Given that South Bend is in the heart of the B1G's traditional footprint and that they schedule a few B1G programs in the various sports, it's easy to see why they get grouped with the B1G.
Well, when your conference wins three national titles in a row, with three different conference members, you can say pretty much whatever you want. SEC members certainly touted our conference over the last couple of decades. It's on the SEC to reverse the current narrative.
Yeah, nobody really clapped back at the SEC for it.
We kinda watered the SEC down with too many teams & lots of NIL/portal issues.
But congrats to the B1G...they bought them some good players.
No program touted how great the SEC is/was than South Carolina. Even though we really didn't bring much of anything to the conference, we talked more about how great the SEC was than any other program or fan base. This is/was especially true when we were talking to Clemson fans.
We brought geographic expansion to the SEC's footprint. IMO, the SEC has overexpanded.

That's a popular narrative on this forum, but I've never found that to be the case in real life. My friends and family who pull for Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Bama, Auburn, etc. all seem to tout the SEC as much as we do when talking with fans of OOC teams. Maybe the difference is that we talk to OOC fans more than most of them since our rival is an OOC team.
Regardless, there haven't been as many "SEC! SEC! SEC!" chants in _any_ stadium over the last few years as before.

I will say I tuned into 107.5 the game earlier this week and Jay and that awful sidekick of his in the afternoons talked about SEC this, SEC that for a solid 30 mins until I turned the channel.
I was sick of it and it was ludicrous, especially since they were implying heavily we are a better team because of the conference- as if last year and our record never happened.

I haven't listened to 107.5 since Heath left. Jay's sidekick is beyond awful. Not a fan of Jay's either.
Is Phil Kornblut still around? He was broadcasting when I started my first job out of school. I am guessing he is retired.
Oh, how the tables have turned. Indiana was that nobody a few years back. Now they are somebody playing nobody's.
Not sure. I have never listed to Kornblut. Not because I didn't like him, I simply didn't know where to find him.

The Big 10’s total number of wins (4) during that period includes the last three years. I’ll wait before declaring them anywhere near as dominant as the SEC.

I think he has a nightly podcast. Many don't like Phil but I remember him being a pioneer. He's all we had and he did a great job. He covered college football recruiting before cell phones became the norm.

I am very curious if this was his lightening in a bottle or if he sustains a high level of success. With his financial backing, I bet he doesnt fall far, even if he falls back from championship level.
He made it to the playoffs the year before, so he's now made 2 playoff appearances in a row as the Indiana head coach.
Long time ago and memory is foggy, but back in the day kornblut’s sports talk radio show was must listen for me on Thursday nights I think. He’d have a guy on there predicting saturdays games, whether a team would cover the spread and/or win straight up that was pretty good.
He’s still on radio. 6 til 8 in florence on 96.3. The Braves kick him off when they play.
My memory is also foggy, but if I remember correctly, both fanbases accused him of being for the other team.
The clemson people called him korncoot and some of ours called him korntater or something. I just remember the message board arguments of each side accusing him of being for the other.
I thought this was on a message board he ran? Sportstalk?

Tiger Phil I believe was our side’s moniker for him.
There was a message board called Sportstalk (I think; foggy). King Ward was on there and so was I under a different name. Kevin something was running it I think.

My thought at the time was that he was doing a good job if each side thought he was for the other.
Back in the day when I was working in Columbia, a friend of mine who was a Gamecock fan, we would both go to lunch with Kornblut. Phil, a Carolina graduate, KNEW we were Gamecock fans. But, he never once let his guard down to us showing us Gamecock allegiance.

Negative. Leonard’s Losers was syndicated. The guy I was referring to ran some kind of betting business.

OH, ok.
Whatever happened to Don Williams? He did Sportstalk for awhile and, I tihnk did something with our football radio broadcasts.
And is Teddy Hefner still around?
Phil has his show on form 6-8pm in the evenings- still broadcast on various channels around South Carolina. Phil is usually in the Columbia studio but broadcasts a fair amount from the beach in the summer. No plans that I know of to retire. It's also broadcast on video too.
I think Phil's show is better now than it ever has been to be honest. He talks about various issues, takes pretty strong opinions, and takes phone calls. He also has good guests and he still shows up at all the USC and Clemson stuff and asks good questions to people in charge.
He also still does his Friday night 10pm-midnight radio show of high school football coverage in the fall.
He does a solid job.
His sidekick also does a good job- he broadcasts out of his home down in Sardis, SC. They have their studio guy (call screener guy) who is much younger and chimes in a little.
I listen online as the radio station in Columbia is hard for me to pick up where I live.

Still does that on Thursday nights in football season but that guy you hear retired so he has another guest that does the same thing.
