This calls for a comment. I retired after 753 years in education, and firmly disagree with the comment "8th grade is actually the grade most kids repeat." This does NOT happen; academic based retention IS a K-2 situation to get kids on the right track. By 8th grade, retentions do not happen due to social (labling) concerns.8th grade is actually the grade most kids repeat. Bassett I believe did 8th twice and I think Schwab boys as well. So if it's kindergarten it's ok why? Are you fairly certain his grades were good in 8th grade? My guess is you've no clue and you look for any reason you can to say bad things about Ben
A set of parents would have to be seriously pushy to "redshirt" their kid for nonacademic reasons. (Granted, I would have been tempted to if my kid had been an 89# 9th grader trying to wrestle 103 back in the day.)
Whether or not Kueter repeated 8th grade or not, there is NO reason to think he was ever academically challenged.

I finally made it to Iowa IPERS' "Rule of 1000" (maximum pension).
I believe he was referring to 8th grade being the most repeated grade for kids " redshirting" , which is accurate. In some states, you dont have to repeat 8th grade, you can take a gap year between 8th and 9th grade and not go to school at all.
I can honestly say I never heard of a gap year between 8th & 9th.
Do any states bordering Iowa have that policy?
If you start at the 49:30 mark, they discuss Jordan's recent IG story. Apparently he's going (or trying to go) 149 next season. I'm happy with that provided Ryder is content at 157. Ryder gassed a few times last year and I can't help but think weight cutting was a factor.
That said, check out Jordan's Pan-Ams run. Impressive work and certainly inspires some much needed confidence.

To the teacher with 753 years of experience- nobody that holds back their kid in 8th grade does so at the same school. Your K-2 example is with school buy in. With athletic holdbacks parents are solely driving the bus.
To the other dodos, nobody who holds back their kid in 8th grade pulls a gap year, there are laws about educating your children.
When kids are held back in 8th grade for athletic did purposes, they move from a public school to a private, parochial, charter, or home school situation and repeat the 8th grade. Then they enter 9th grade the next year. Sometimes staying at or going to a different private school, where you could say academically that was a pretty good idea anyway, or they head back to (usually a different) public or parochial school.
And this is pretty limited to a group of elite athletes (in all sports), thus saying it is common is in related to the small sample size, not the general population. This is a wrestling board, so that should have been fairly self evident, but as usual, wasn’t to some.

After 753 years in education, I figured that asking them to recall recent history was the safe bet.

Yep. We had actual physical books. We actually had to read them. The entire book. And write what we learned with pencil & paper. In cursive.
Kids are doing it more and more. I live in SE Iowa and there are multiple kids doing it in this region.

You can’t do a “gap” year in 8th grade - not even in Iowa. Those kids are enrolled at a private, parochial, charter, or home school.
he didnt focus on football when he got to college. The wrestling program and coaches he committed to. His training partners. The last 15 + years as an Iowa fan.
He will probably be a 4x finalist against a PSU heavy.
All of the above and more. rinse and F repeat.
Majorities in rural Iowa and small-towns chew tobacco and believe in god.

The kids in my area are/were taking 8th grade twice with the 2nd year being "home school" now that 8th graders can compete in varsity sports here in Iowa you will be seeing this done in 7th grade.

My daughter started varsity in softball in 8th grade at 3a Benton community in 2010 and they played a few 8th graders when she was in HS…… since when has 8th graders playing varsity sports been illegal in Iowa?

Its not/wasnt illegal.....it wasnt permitted by the ihsaa or ighsau. Once a student completed 8th grade, they were/are considered freshman. Since the iowa baseball/softball season is considered a summer sport, they are/were eligible once the school year ends. Starting this upcoming school year, 8th graders are eligible to compete in hs sports.
This has become apocryphal. He was really just the same guy. Though he did get 3rd before the weight loss, and his best finish was 4th after, his bonus point scoring went up considerably.
The difference is expectations suddenly went up after the weight loss but the reality was he had the same limitations.
His biggest advantage is that he’s in one of the rooms that builds heavies up into beasts, both in terms of size and skill. If his shoulder holds up, he’s going to be a big freaking problem.
Imagine thinking a guy who turns 19 in December of his freshman year is “young for his grade.”
