I have no issue with the idea the coach makes a public statement thats really meant, or at least in part, for the team. Spring depth charts are an example of that.

I disagree that harping on his comment is prissy-ish, etc. He did say it publicly.

I wonder though, how much of it was frustration vs how much of it was calculated. We've often talked about how Shane is still learning on the job. He is less than stoic at times, is about the nicest way I can put it.
Yes he did say it publicly; that was my point.

Yeah, I just think that opens it to the harping. Jmo
Fair enough.

I remember Holtz saying after a practice week going into a georgia game that Blake Mitchell was the best quarterback he had ever seen; this was when Mitchell was a freshman and running the scout team. Now everyone knew what Holtz was conveying but no one was saying going into the next season that Mitchell was a Heisman candidate because of that. Yet we're waving this over Beamer's head while at the same time saying we 'hope he succeeds'. Both sides of mouth, passive-aggressive stuff. To each his own; this is mine.

I'm going to say this knowing I'll get hammered on here but ima say it anyway....

I don't think what Beamer said was directed to the fans; it was not said to assuage the fans. It was to the players, the team. People see players as free this/free that/paid to do a job/etc etc, and while true, they are fundamentally humans that need encouraging and support like everyone else. A good coach, any coach really, knows this; what is said in closed locker rooms sometimes needs to be said in public too.

Continuing as a fan to harp on Beamer's statement comes off to me as prissy-ish, and very 'show the Epstein files' like. I truly do not mean to offend anyone but its just lame now.

Shields on.
I'm not going to jump on you. I know you mean well. I agree with Lurker that it is not prissy- ish. I don't believe any fan prior to Beamer saying it demanded nor predicted a CFP appearance. When Beamer said it, that widened my eyes. It's all on Beamer, not the fans. And it's not USC fans who have since he said it written article(s) saying Beamer is on the hot seat. It's others. I understand your point regarding the Blake Mitchell example. The difference is that Beamer gets paid $8 million/year. So fans expect more from the highly paid coaches. It's a tough business. No one can deny that. But these coaches get paid pretty well for it.

I do think you are right about encouraging players. I know when I played, I played for both a coach who wanted to tear down players and for a coach who tried to positively reinforce. I responded and played better to and for the later coach.

It change your perception of him and the program?
What if we actually win a game in the playoffs?
Also lf we win a game in the CFP does it give him a long leash like Paris has? After all Paris hasn't really won anything and he is still here.
Im hopeful that both Beamer and Paris win big here this year!
I've been a fan for to many years to expect it but I'm hopeful!
How in the world could it NOT change your perception of Beamer and the program?

I don't think it should buy him a lifetime contract or anything, but it would definitely show he can get us to where we want to be.

Paris comparison is more like muschamp. Momentum after year 2, then rock bottom. Beamer would be more like Spurrier's slow build, without being close to 70 yrs old by the time he actually got us over the hump.

It kills me to see people post that "Beamer is still learning". He is paid $8 million dollars a year!! You don't pay anyone that kind of money to learn the job you are paying them to do.

If Beamer was being paid $400,000 a year plus performance bonuses, I could accept the "Beamer is still learning" nonsense.

I would prefer the learning had taken place as a coordinator somewhere, or head coach of a smaller school.

Can you provide the quote where he did this? Because he did not do this.

No, youre right, he left wiggle room.

“We’re going to be sitting here (this time next November) watching the playoff rankings to see where we are in the ranking show,” Beamer told reporters this week. “And we’re going to be firmly in the mix for a College Football Playoff berth.”

The kind of quote where you can claim to be right whether we make the playoffs or not.

Shane Beamer declares South Carolina will be in the CFP hunt in 2026🏆: "I do know next year at this time, we're going to be sitting here on this Tuesday night, watching the playoff rankings to see where we are."

This was his quote. I got this doing a quick Google search and this came up.

I guess that statement would be true even if you weren't in the rankings.

His $8 million a year training wage has allowed him to learn coach doublespeak like a seasoned pro.

Yeah, what exactly does "firmly in the mix for a College Football Playoff berth" mean?

Lurker and Piscis answered for me accurately. Clearly as Lurker said, he left himself wiggle room. BUT he said it with the obvious intent to interpret him that we are going to make it, coming off a very disappointing 4-8 season. He was smart enough to know the wolves would be at his doorstep, as evidenced by the fact that Beamer is reportedly in the "hot seat". So, he sure wasn't wanting to give the impression we won't get in. He obviously felt the pressure.

I already knew the quote. I'm just wondering how you call that "clearly guaranteeing we will be in the CFB playoffs this year".

I would assume that means he expects to be similar to what we were, record wise, to 2024 when we were indeed "firmly in the mix for a College Football Playoff berth". I don't thin that's out of the realm of possibility at all.

OK, let me word it this way: he clearly wanted to give the IMPRESSION that we will make the playoffs. You don't say what he said without him wanting you to make that interpretation.

Yeah, initially I was surprised he's telling people we'll be in the playoffs. It was after he was catching a lot of crap, so it seemed an odd lashing out.

Then, rereading it, you see he didn't really guarantee anything, and basically can claim to be right either way.

His "one billion percent" quote was equally ambiguous. He guaranteed 2026 would be much better than 2025. He set himself a pretty low bar with that guarantee.

So ‘we’ll be lucky to make the playoffs next year’ would suit you guys better? That’s something like Holtz would say and get away with, but you guys would skewer Beamer.

I still don’t get what has you and a couple others so up in arms. So question; in your view, did Trump advise the public to drink bleach?

BDS.

Three of us, based on what you said there. I guess I'll bite first.

If you read what I posted yesterday, I questioned the wisdom of Beamer even going there. I would have been more "political" (I hate using that word on a sports board) in my comments about the 2025 season and prospects on 2026. But that's me. Of course, I am not aware of what pressure Beamer is under. I suspect that Donati is not someone to let anyone coast.

By the way, saying we will suck in 2026 is something more like what the late, great Vince Dooley would have said.

I think what it all boils down to is that some people just like to complain.

I don't think Beamer has Holtz's leeway.

And no, Trump didnt tell people to drink bleach. We both know that.

Ah but thats not whats being discussed, now is it.

And there were those that said Trump 'implied' for everyone to drink bleach. We both know that.

But it was during the 4-8 season that he started talking about playoffs. It was the circumstances that drove that statement. He was frustrated over talking about his 3 wins ( at the time) and threw that out there.

Isnt that separation between talk and actual results what we're talking about? Would anyone blink if someone like coach Sarkisian said it?

As for trump, of course people tried to imply that. They were wrong, you and I both agree on that. Just like anyone saying he "guaranteed" the playoffs. Upon review, he hedged his bets.

Maybe it's just me but it seems that mountains are being made out of molehills here. Beamer has immense pressure on him to produce this season. If people here do not realize it, then they have been living in a cave and have BCS. People with good intentions can disagree on what "produce" is. But no one should slough off the pressure that's on Beamer. I think Beamer knows it. And that's why he said what he did say about the College Playoffs, IN PUBLIC. What does he have to produce? Only Jeremiah Donati KNOWS. And I don't believe Donati "suffers fools". I obviously can't prove it but I truly believe that if Ray Tanner was still AD, Paul Manieri would still be our baseball coach.

Oh and how has Trump's name come up on this thread? Can he coach football? I think he already has a full-time job tying him up for the next 2 1/2 years.
