I have a flex fuel vehicle that can take E-85 and I've been using a lot of it lately. $1.89 for E-85 here in west central Iowa. My mileage drops about 20% but still a bargain. Thank you farm subsidies I guess.

There are 8 EVs available right now with an estimated range at full charge over 400 miles. The top one (Lucid Air) has a range of over 500 miles and charges another 200 miles in 12 minutes.

Now all of that is in perfect conditions without hills to climb so its not quite as rosy as that. Still, gone are the days when you charge every two hours. You can quite easily expect to go 4 hours at 80 miles/hour. Take a quick bio and food break, then go another 2-3 hours.

Any farther than that and people are often flying. In less than 5 years I expect EVs will have eliminated the range issue for 99.99% of us.

Yeah I suppose. I’ve been in Chicago since I left the U of I so maybe I’m out of touch. The benefits of almost never having to use a connecting flight to go from A to B.

Agree 100%. The hate on EVs is crazy. I have the same Tesla Model as you - freaking love it. Insanely fun to drive, have taken it on road trips, easily over 3hrs before having to charge. The supercharger infra is game changing.

I'm in Chicago as well and last weekend drove about 5-6 hours to Michigan (lake front town). In past years we've gone to Mackinaw Island. I guess I'd have to specifically look but I don't remember a lot of charging stations along the way. With all the traffic in Chicago and Indiana, we're usually on a tight schedule and can't sit for too long. We're looking for a new vehicle so I probably should look at an EV to see if it makes sense or not. Amy suggestions?

This last spring we spent time on Whidbey Island off the coast of Washington. We drove to CR, flew to Seattle, train to the bus station, bus station to ferry. 15 hrs of sucky public transportation. I would have taken 2 1/2 days to drive but my wife and others who were with us overruled me.

Yep, we jumped 27 cents after being fairly stable before at $3.49 in downtown Ironduff, NC.

Depends on budget. My current preference is for Tesla because they win on charging network, advanced driving features, and company stability. But the brand I really want to see succeed is Lucid - great vehicles with giant batteries. The problem is the company is not financially sound, they might be too pricey for most people and they are behind on automated driving. Lucids can use the a Tesla network with an adapter so that is not really a barrier.

FYI there are plenty of Tesla chargers between Chicago and Mackinaw island. I‘ve driven part of that route multiple times to go to Michigan and Michigan State with my current (11 year old) Model S. Chargers are not a barrier for routes like that IMO.

Tesla model Y is a great car. I’ve only driven Tesla
electric cars, but all electric cars have the same one pedal driving, which is my favorite feature.

Tesla charging network is inperarive imo. Make sure whatever car is compatible with Tesla charging network, I think they all are now but not sure

Most people who go EV don’t go back, because they like the way they drive so much better.


And last, everyone’s different, but the batteries are plenty big for me.

The only thing I would not recommend a EV for is someone who regularly drives more than 4 hours in one direction or towing large things.
