Do they eat wild hogs? That would be helpful.
apparently they will eat just about anything, but mostly vegetarian, search says that protein is a very small part of their diet. Opportunistic is how they describe them
Not very aggressive. Nothing like Grizzlies. Still tho quite able to rip a person into pulled pork. Yet another reason to carry.
Damn! I pass by that walking trail a good bit. I would hate to turn the corner and see that on the path with me, "aggressive" or not. 17 that.
You better make sure you climb a thick, sturdy tree. 'cause they will have you down faster than 17.

I turned a corner and startled one who was in the middle of the trail. I just did what the books say and made myself big and scary. I picked up my bike in both hands, sort of shook it at her, and yelled. I figured if she charged I could use the bike as kind of a shield, delaying my death.
She looked at me and ran off. I rode the opposite way, back down the mountain.
Another time I was with some friends, and we saw two little cubs running off into the trees. That REALLY scared me, because I figured there was a nervous mother nearby.

Yeah. The first bear had zero interest in you other than to get away. The second unseen mama bear would absolutely 17 you up to defend her cubs.
Saw something interesting on bear behavior the other day. They will routinely use human hiking trails, but only at night when they know humans won't be using them. They avoid the trails during the day when humans will be there.

Similar to the bear cub feeling- about a decade ago, I was elk hunting west of RMNP and was heading back to the truck after stalking unsuccessfully in the morning. I came out of a pretty thick aspen grove about 100 yards from the truck and knelt to check gear on my way out. I was still for just a few minutes and got a really weird feeling. About equally as far from me from the truck and the treeline was a mountain lion. They say you shouldn't run with a handgun. I still think about how long that cat was on me that day.
We get black bears in our yard about 4 or 5 times a year. I caught a juvenile male on our Blink cam two weeks ago. They are mostly docile and actually teach the cubs to climb tress at the first hint of danger. There's actually never been a black bear attack fatality on a human in the state of Georgia. We use the watch and scare method to keep them from becoming too comfortable around the houses. Watch them for a while, then yell at them or bang pots together and they run. One figured out how to open my neighbors garage fridge a few years ago and cleaned it out. Best comparison I've heard is they are like giant racoons.
There was one in downtown Meridian 2 years ago, and one was seen below Grenada damn last year with cubs....

Saw one cross the road in front of me between New Albany and Oxford on hwy. 30. Not as big as the one you showed in the photo, but a decent sized adult.
I wouldn't be so cavalier with regards to the Black Bear. I've seen a young scout in New Mexico almost get his head ripped off by one who entered the scout's tent. He survived, but the 200+ stitches on his face, ear-to ear, will be a story he can tell his grandkids for life. Some in Alaska grow really big and can challenge the Brown Bears. Have seen videos where a Black and a Brown get into a fight, then the Brown backs down, turns and run.
The third and fourth sentence dont seem very cavalier. But usually if given an avenue for escape they will avoid people. Obviously they can shred you if they choose so. Like pulled pork
Key word is usually. You still better be very careful around a black bear. They are still very dangerous. Especially if they become acclimated to being around humans.
Black bears are responsible for more deaths than the other bears. Not because they're more aggressive, but because they're smaller and people make the stupid mistake of assuming they're not dangerous. Just a big old teddy bear and they try to approach it and then it's a case of FAFO.
