Unfortunately this is what we must do. The rich get richer. OSU was already vastly outspending us. Imagine what they will do with an additional $17m. I hope Kraft is looking at opportunities like this. Not only do we need to keep up with player compensation but we also need to pay for the stadium renovation.
OSU, PSU, and all large schools have a $21.5 million cap on NIL payments. Money from logos on jerseys and the stadium helps to offset the cost of operations but it doesn't increase the amount available for players. That has to come from 3rd party payments made directly to players and through collectives. Are JP Morgan or West Shore Homes, or Giant Foods doing that? Addidas acted like part of their $300 million would go towards NIL but it has never been spelled out.

Just a matter of time until they’re all wearing 2+ patches. Money’s being left on the table with all that empty jersey space. The only limiting factor is possible blowback from fans.

Is that weasel Surma still there?? If so, I'd be conflicted about this one.
Well: US Steel doesn't really exist anymore (except in name). It is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nippon Steel US.
So there's that.

As for Surma?
He has been out of there since 2013

He was the Chairman there from 2006 through 2013 (the company lost 1/2 of its value during that time), During his time as Chair, "leading" US Steel, he likely drew around "9 Figures" in compensation.

But don't weep for John. He was also sitting on the Board of BNYMellon (while Karen "This will all be a distant memory" Peetz was in charge there) and was paid very handsomely. Peetz, of course, is the person who Surma turned over the gavel to, as Chair of the PSU Board in 2012. (After Surma had completed his mission here)
He also was given the Chair spot of a non-profit - National Safety Council - that paid him very handsomely. Not sure what for. And another appointment as Chair of the Federal Reserve, Cleveland Branch. Why? Who knows?

I believe that cap is for revenue from the media rights. I could be wrong. I do not have a full understanding by any means and not sure anyone really does, but from what I have read the adidas and other revenue can go to player compensation through other funding mechanisms and not impact the cap. Some of the Adidas money is meant to go to player compensation in contract, and other Adidas monies is at the discretion of the Athletic Director. That is how Tennessee used Adidas money to land that five star 2M/yr Rb. I do not believe for year one of this contract that kraft has chosen to use his discretionary adidas funds for player compensation. Again, I’m not claiming to be an expert by any stretch, only repeating what I read elsewhere. But many of these richer schools are able to move funds from other sources into player compensation and it’s not just NIL and not hitting their cap.

We all find NIL difficult to understand. I think donors can pay the university for things like naming rights, logos on uniforms, etc. but I think any donor money going to players has to be either a direct deal with players or the collective.

Addidas mentioned NIL opportunities. My interpretation is that most of the $300 million ($30 million per year) will be given to the university in exchange for being named the official footwear, uniforms, and apparel of PSU. Their logo will appear on all university sanctioned merchandise. Maybe Addidas is holding back $5 million per year to give directly to players or Happy Valley United. I wouldn't be surprised if they were reluctant to sign deals with new high school recruits because they wouldn't get much in return. But assume a player like Kobe Howard turns out to be a huge star like Parsons or Barkley. At that point they might be willing to offer Howard a deal to appear in ads or to endorse their products.

NO. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH "MEDIA RIGHTS". "REVENUE SHARE", THE 20+ MILLION $ BIT, COMES FROM ANY REVENUE OF THE UNIVERSITY (MEDIA REVENUE, REVENUE FROM SELLING HOT DOGS, TUITION.... IT DOESN'T MATTER. AND NOONE KNOWS ANYWAY, ITS ONE BIG POT)

I do not have a full understanding by any means and not sure anyone really does, but from what I have read the adidas and other revenue can go to player compensation through other funding mechanisms and not impact the cap.
ANY UNIVERSITY REVENUE CAN BE USED FOR THE "$20 MILLION" BUT IT ALL COUNTS AGAINST THE CAP (WHETHER THERE IS ANY MEANINGFUL LEVEL OF ACTUAL REVENUE FROM ADIDAS IS ANOTHER QUESITON :)

NO

IRRELEVANT, AS PER ABOVE
THE ONLY RELEVANT ISSUE IS THAT: THE UNIVERSITY CAN TAKE $20 MILLION FROM ANYWHERE AND USE IT TO PAY "REVENUE SHARE" (THE $20 MILLION). IT ALL GOES IN THE SAME BIG POT.
BUT NO MORE THAN THE $20+ MILLION. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "DISCRETIONARY ADIDAS MONEY".

Again, I’m not claiming to be an expert by any stretch, only repeating what I read elsewhere. But many of these richer schools are able to move funds from other sources into player compensation and it’s not just NIL and not hitting their cap.
PSU - OR ANY OTHER SCHOOL - CAN'T (LEGALLY) TAKE ANY OF THEIR FUNDS TO "PAY PLAYERS" WITHOUT IT COUNTING TOWARDS THE $20 MILLION CAP.

THE "CHATTER" IS ABOUT THIRD PARTIES - ie THE NIKES AND ADIDASES - GIVING $ TO PLAYERS TO GET THEM TO GO TO SPECIFIC SCHOOLS (ALSO NOT A PURPOSE THAT IS WITHIN THE RULES, BUT WHO CARES?).
IF THAT IS THE CASE, AND I EXPECT IT IS, IT SURELY DOESN'T APPEAR THAT ADIDAS IS LAYING OUT BIG BUCKS TO GET KIDS TO GO TO PSU (AT LEAST NOT WHEN COMPARED TO PSU's PEERS). DOES IT?
Some clarifications

Most of what you wrote is spot on.

These two items though: $300 Million? and Holding back money? LOL No. Very, very "No"

As far as these sponsorship deals like Chase for OSU, I have to believe this money ultimately finds it way to player compensation. It may simply go into the University NIL collective. What else is the point of slapping a corporate logo on the front of a jersey except to help procure the best talent and win on the field? Although my hope is we can throw some of this money toward the hoops program. The bigger more valuable basketball programs will probably do something like this but PSU hoops would get like a $10,000 deal per year. What did Penn State do with the money from the field naming rights?

As far as the cap, I believe LMTLION is correct. I think that is related to the media revenue sharing.

The Adidas money can be used toward NIL. Again it is a sponsorship. Adidas gets the brand exposure with influencers repping their brand as in Penn State athletes and PSU gets the money to put into the athletic department and NIL collective.

Back to these logos on the jersey sponsorships. PSU obviously will make some kind of deal and we need to do it pretty quickly to keep up with the Joneses. Hopefully we can get one worth at least $15 million annually. At this point it just keeps us treading water and not gaining on any of the big boys in terms of NIL resources.

Considering the PSU alumni base all over the country and the TV ratings that it draws for its games, this is one financial area in which PSU should be very competitive. At the very least, PSU is the strongest regional brand that includes the I-95 megaopolis from Philly to NYC and stretches at least to the Pittsburgh area and includes Central and Western NY and northern MD, if not a larger regional geographic area.

Note that Chase has its HQ in Columbus, which is one reason for the sponsorship. That's one of the issues with PSU sponsorships--very few homegrown or hometown major businesses.
So does Nationwide, Farmers Insurance, Worthington Industries, White Castle, Wendy’s, and Safelite. I’m sure there are others like one (if not the only one) of US makers of washboards, as they are in such demand, Columbus Washboard Company. ;-)

The majority of people don’t even know who or what Cencora is. There’s no better way to make everyone aware than to put a Cencora patch on the PSU jersey for a boat load of sponsored money. They have the deepest pockets. Make it happen Kraft.

Nor do they care.

Manhatten is 50 miles further than Conshohocken. No need to limit it to in state companies.

Yeah, I used to play vs most of those companies in Corporate Challenge soccer. We beat Worthington Industries for the title one year. Not Nationwide tho--they started a team with D1 athletes (we had a couple ourselves).

Do you only do business with homegrown companies? Is the goal to beat Bucknell or OSU?

Columbus is also bigger than Pittsburgh and Miami combined.

Wisconsin has a deal with Culver's and it said that there would be addional opportunities for NIL deals with athletes.

The Wisconsin Badgers and Culver's announced a jersey patch partnership starting with the 2026–27 sports season, featuring the restaurant's logo on football, men's basketball, and men's hockey uniforms. The patches debut on September 6, 2026, when the football team plays Notre Dame at Lambeau Field. [1, 2, 3]

Partnership Details
    • Teams Included: Football, men's basketball, and men's hockey.
    • Debut Date: September 6, 2026 (vs. Notre Dame).
    • Additional Benefits: Creates Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for student-athletes and fan engagement.
    • Existing Presence: Culver's already displays an on-court logo at the Kohl Center
