Man, back when the daughter was little, we used to throw the best kids birthday parties. We lived way out in the sticks far from the other families, so we had to give them a reason to want to get out there. I smoked brisket, had coolers full of beer, wine, and the seltzer drinks, and we had a legit petting zoo come out (we had 1.5 acres, so it was enough for them to set up all the pens). I'm talking alpacas, baby cows, tiny little horses and donkeys, sheep, goats, rabbits, etc. It was a blast.

We went all out and spent quite a bit on it but I never, ever would have imagined asking the other parents to put in on it. Although, with current brisket pricing, that could be a big deal! It was just the price of wanting the kids (and the parents who were forced to be around each other) to have the best time they could.

There are some things where I don't mind tipping (as a purely optional activity) when I can tell they did a good job, and where the people doing the work get a small percentage of what I'm paying - like movers. I think movers make crappy money, but if I see them working their tails off and taking a lot of care in how they're doing their job so they don't mess up my stuff or my place, then I'll tip them for that.

But there are a whole lot of places that have started pressing for tips that I'm not falling for. I loooove that they phrase it as "the screen is going to ask you a question", rather than "I want you to give me more money because I did the basic job I was hired for".

That sounds right. I did that when I moved from VA back to TX. I had guys load the moving truck in VA and there were several things that I wasn't going to take with me, so I offered them up to the moving guys. Yards tools, snow shovels, some stuff like that. When the cleaners came to do the final cleaning there was still food and drinks in the fridge, so I offered them all of that that they wanted. Beats just throwing it all away.

I'd rather all businesses actually just pay their employees what they're worth, rather than cheaping out and pushing the cost indirectly and more covertly onto customers. It doesn't have anything to do with being poor or rich. It's essentially a relic of slavery, and how we initially treated freed slaves ... and of European customs of the time, although Europe itself has not embraced it to nearly the same extent we have and/or retreated from that culture. It's dumb. Pay your workers. If that cost needs to be recouped, place it plainly and clearly onto the cost of your service/product.

One year the kids were in the yard staring at this toad that was on the back steps. A snake came out from under the steps and snatched the toad. The kids were awe-struck! They weren't screaming or freaking out; instead they had just seen the coolest thing they'd seen in their lives!
