Croom was a horrible coach. He had no potential. MSU being the only organization to give him a chance to be a head coach tells you all you need to know about both him, and MSU at the time.
Meh, I think we all have the potential to succeed in the right space and with the right attitude. But yeah, considering the way Croom chose to do things, he likely wasn’t going to be good anywhere.

Had he realized his strength was being the face guy, and decided to turn the whole thing over to assistants and maybe focused on cutthroat crootin, I think he coulda been ok. But instead he was hardheaded and wanted to prove certain things and go about it the ‘right way’ or whatever. And insisted he was involved in the offense, and run a stupid one based on ideals and not reality.

Literally one of the worst humans on the planet, much less worst coaches. Lonnie Tinkle waved the white flag when he hired that POS.
He was arrogant, yes, as most coaches are. Worst humans on the planet? Dude you must not get out much.

He sucked, just let it ride at that. But he wasn’t a bad guy. This sounds personal.

Clearly you never met him. I thought Croom was an absolute disaster as a head coach but personally he was engaging and very friendly. A far cry from his boss at the time.

Croom was a terrible coach..... but it he did have some very good characteristics. His defenses played salty and the players played hard for him. The players seemed love him did they not or was that my imagination?

What he did wrong was try to run a West Coast style offense without a QB to run it or the ability to recruit and train one. We could not complete a pass against air at times. The timing was always off and the ball was never put in a place where the RB or WR caught the ball in stride to get YAC which is the key to that offense. It wasn't the play call, as most plays I saw could have worked with a QB that could put the ball where it needed to be put.

If Croom had agreed to bring in a new offense with a new OC and coaching staff, he may could been successful but I doubt it. If a man can't see what he is doing is not working then he should not be a HC. You should not have to be told to change your staff and offensive philosophy if you can't make an offense work. If you can't see your own flaws, you can't improve them.

That offense probably would have worked with Tyler Russell if you really want to go down a what if rabbit hole

As bad as the West Coast offense was, Croom's recruiting was what really held his offense back. Especially QB and WR recruiting. As bad as our QB play has been for most of the last 50 years, the Croom years was the worst.
