You lie. None of the sec schools and only Rutgers any Maryland in the BIG. Maybe it is time for a super league.
Alabama receives 26 mil and South Carolina receives 42 mil only Six SEC schools no support.
UCLA 30 mil, Rutgers 21 mil and Maryland 12 mil. Only 5 public Big 10 universities receive no direct institutional support.

Oh boy. It’s becoming painfully obvious the non-AAU landscaping school in Ames doesn’t have a college of business.

Here, let’s repeat the lesson: preserving cash and borrowing at historically low rates during a once-in-a-century financial crisis is standard financial management. Burning through reserves isn’t.

CFOs generally preserve cash when they can borrow at historically low rates, especially during an unprecedented crisis. Ohio State did. The University of Iowa did. Plenty of others did. ISU chose the opposite approach.

As for Iowa refinancing or extending debt, that’s standard financial management, not evidence the original decision was wrong. Debt gets refinanced all the time for cash flow, interest rates, or capital planning.

Then again, this is Land Grant U we’re talking about, not a place that has a Tippie College of business.
ISU grads can’t possibly comprehend this concept. I have a 1.99% home loan. Why would I pay off my house when I can use the same money to make 4 x more a year w the same money. Do Clones think?

AI searches disagree with you.

Historically, zero (or virtually zero) direct Iowa state tax revenue goes to the University of Iowa Department of Athletics.

Funding and Budget Structure
    • Self-Supporting Auxiliary: The University of Iowa Athletics operates entirely as a self-sustaining auxiliary department separate from the state’s general fund appropriations.

    • Revenue Sources: Budgets are funded through ticket sales, athletic conference distributions (such as the Big Ten), media rights, corporate sponsorships, and private fundraising/donations.

    • Institutional Support: The department receives negligible to no direct financial operational support or tax allocations from the university's general academic fund or state taxpayers, relying instead on self-generated revenue streams.

It’s a **** school that lost its AAU status so the answer is no. They are an academic embarrassment to our state.

Iowa State University is a Carnegie R1 (Very High Level of Research). Most of our research comes from the Department of Energy and private industries. AAU values medical research and discounts research in other areas.
Veterinary medicine, engineering, sciences, agriculture, etc.
We don’t have a medical school, but we are good with what we do.
Technically we chose to leave since we didn’t fit.

The $21M for revenue sharing was a cost that wasn’t really planned for, mostly because it wasn’t on anyone’s radar before implementation. The athletic department seems to have this covered now, and we’re in a position to compete with legitimate NIL deals. The challenge is that money is being thrown around for players who wouldn’t make it through the clearinghouse and so far there’s been no penalty for doing it.

One idea being discussed is raising the gambling tax. Iowa currently has the lowest rate among the 41 states with legalized gambling around 6%. Even tripling it would still leave Iowa in the lower half nationally.

ISU’s issue is that donors stepped up to fully fund revenue sharing and legitimate NIL deals. But now you have situations like Kentucky paying $6M for one of our former basketball players. That’s pure pay‑for‑play, and only a handful of programs can operate at that level. Somehow we’ve reached a point where some teams have $40–45M rosters, which is just wild.

Good question
The 21 mil for Revenue sharing was cost that wasn’t really budgeted for since it really wasn’t on the horizon before it was implemented. However, I think the athletic department has this covered now. We can also compete with legit NIL deals, but reality is money is being thrown around for players that can not make it thru the “clearing house”. So far no penalty for doing this.
One idea being talked about is raising the gambling tax. Iowa is lowest tax rate of the 41 state with legalized gambling. I think it is 6% and at 3 times amount would still have us in the lower half of the states.
ISU problem is we have donors step up and get us to fully funding revenue sharing. Also able to fund legitimate NIL deals.
But now we have Kentucky paying 6 mil for one of our former BB players. That is pay for play, which only a handful of teams can pull that off. Somehow we got to the point of some teams having 40-45 mil rosters…that is crazy.
Can you answer the question? That was gibberish, have you been drinking? Wait. Don’t answer that question. Only one question here. Yes or no. Does ISU need the support. Clown

No. Alabama didn’t get a $26 million check from the State of Alabama for athletics. You’re confusing NCAA institutional support with direct state funding. Institutional support is an accounting category, not proof of taxpayer funding. Those aren’t the same thing, no matter how badly you want them to be.

Yes or no are they an AAU institution. It’s plain and simple. Also, isn’t it great that the U of I has a world class children’s hospital. Would you wave? Does Ames have anything similar. Can we wave to the cows and goats?

I don't think I've ever known anybody in Iowa that had goats. If they were at the county fair I missed them.

The University of Iowa also benefits from the Big Ten Academic Alliance, which brings in more millions to schools than football and basketball do.

I'm not aware of any P4 or G5 conference that has anything comparable. I suspect that when Nebraska was admitted their faculty must have been doing cartwheels. They were in the AAU at the time.

Good point. The level of money flowing to schools in the BTAA dwarfs funds received via the ballyhooed media deal.

This is true. It’s remarkable that Iowa supports two FBS football programs for a state this size. Minnesota, Arkansas, Louisiana, West Virginia, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Wyoming all get by with one. Basketball is another conversation.

If the Legislature were ever going to get involved, it would make more sense to invest in the state’s flagship than keep duplicating somthing in a small population base.

I wonder if Campbell wasn’t thrilled with Iowa State’s NIL priorities and the increasing emphasis on basketball. Who knows. What we do know is Campbell reportedly passed on opportunities tied to Notre Dame, USC, Wisconsin, and NFL interest over the years. This time, when Penn State came calling, he was ready to leave. Penn State is an elite job, but something clearly changed. Coaches who repeatedly turn down marquee opportunities don’t usually reverse course for no reason.
At some point he had to leave. And I’m not sure he was actually ever offered the job at any of those places. In fact I’m pretty sure he wasn’t. He also wasn’t Penn St’s top choice. Probably even top 3 but again most of those that were were probably unrealistic. Penn St is a top 5-10 job. To stay at Iowa St for whatever reason would be just crazy in that situation.

No.
No freaking way do I want my tax dollars going to any university. I graduated with a BBA and literally learned nothing. Granted, i was an older student with real job experience. But I got a piece of paper that said I was very smart all of a sudden.
And then I spent years trying to pay for that piece of paper.

Just another reason to dump ISU from the schedule and do home and homes with an SEC Team Week 2

IOWA is under contract to play Clown U thru the 2027 season.

I really hope Beth Goetz grins as she announces that the series will be discontinued.

Clown U may never sell out another football game as a result.

Nobody ever accused hawk fans of being the brightest bulbs. Understanding basic business concepts is key. Oh, and eventually the state will even out the taxpayer support it provides Iowa and ISU since significantly more Iowa residents attend ISU.

thanks for proving business knowledge and ISU are oxymorons

You already know the answer, sport. Did ISU Athletic Dept borrow any funds to meet budget? In fact, ISU had a $50M surplus. If you don’t understand the basics, go read up.

Speaking of reading up....Clown U is about to run out of cash to cover their annual deficits.

For FY 2025, Clown U was short around $25M (covered by their cash reserves).

For FY 2026, Clown U is projecting a deficit of $26.7M (covered again by their cash reserves).

However, going forward, the cash reserves for athletics within the Clown U Foundation will not be sufficient to cover an operating deficit for FY 2027 and beyond.

What follows is from July 24, 2025. As you will read, Clown U was facing a $147M budget deficit through 2031, or just under $25M annually over the next 6 years.

“ISU is engaging with the Big 12 Conference, ISU Foundation, sponsors, donors and other partners to explore additional opportunities to create growth in revenue sufficient to overcome future anticipated revenue shortfalls and to otherwise support the continued success and viability of the ISU athletics program,” department officials reported.

“Historically, (ISU) Athletics operated as a self-sufficient operation transferring the funds necessary to cover operating costs in the current fiscal year,” according to the board report.

“Prior to FY 2025, under the current administration, ISU Athletics had not incurred an operating deficit other than the COVID impacted season, which was absorbed by cash reserves.”

The 2026 budget needed a one-time $26.7 million transfer from the ISU Foundation to remain balanced.

“Going forward the cash reserves for athletics within the Foundation will not be sufficient to cover an operating deficit for FY 2027 and beyond,” ISU officials report.

Given the increase in expenses, the total FY 2026 budget for Iowa State is projected to increase 24% to $141.1M.

I hope they play ISU every 5th and 6th year. I want new blood home and home matchups with arkansas, missou, some ACC teams whatever

Maybe after 2031 they will do that, but doesn't sound like before then.

Thirty years at 2.5 percent is a good deal. Any bright bulb should know that.

ISU wants sports media profits from Iowa, the Big Ten, and the SEC to keep their sinking ship afloat. Why should Coca-Cola be forced to give money to keep RC Cola from going under? They shouldn't.
Don’t ever disparage the good name of RC Cola by comparing them to the ISU athletics department.

Now, after what the “genius” governor and her cronies in Des Moines pulled with the mandatory re-education camp classes, I wouldn’t put stealing from the U of I past them. They hate our university that much.

Big rumors are Beth is pushing for a 2-1 home and away for Iowa.
She may want to keep the series short. If the Big Ten and SEC start an annual home and away interconference series it would draw a lot of viewers. And that tenth P2 game doesn't leave much room for Story County College.

The clowns like to disparage the Big Ten but you know, and they know, if honest, a Big Ten offer would have them sprinting and jumping and leaping and laughing with joy to the B1G.

But they are not an AAU member, and would only reduce the financial piece of the pie for member schools.

The Big Ten presidents would vote no clones.
