The surgeon who replaced my mitral valve said there was a 3% mortality rate. I remember thinking that would make my surgery the most dangerous thing I have ever done. That was 21 years ago. They are much better now. So I won’t worry about you but I have added you to my prayer list. God’s peace to you and your family.

It is scary when you face it but the surgery almost borders on routine. When I had mine done, my surgeon out of UPenn mentioned to me that he did 300/year. That seemed insane to me. It was just another Monday at the office to him.
I have utmost confidence Fair will be in capable hands as well.
My surgeon said the pig/cow valve lasts only ~ 20 years. I really didn't want to go through it again if I didn’t have to, so I went mechanical. They say the ‘downside’ is you need to be on Coumadin/blood thinners for the rest of your life. That has not bothered me on bit. I am very good about taking it daily. I often fall asleep at night listening the the clicking sound

Just saw this thread. Sorry I am so late with this post, but heartfelt prayers up for you, Gambit! I hope to see many more posts from you about Diane Lane and Orthodox Christmas, just to name two topics.

FWIW, I went with natural aortic valve 2 1/2 years ago. I didn’t want to be able to hear the mechanical valve.

Best wishes and sending prayers your way. I too had my valve repaired (mitral), Entered under my right arm and did it all with two small incisions. Cut out a small wedge of my valve (like a slice of pizza) and sewed it together tightly so it would not leak. Also made new tendineae chordae to keep valve from folding in. My doctor was going to use the Da Vince machine but said it breaks too often...... Fortunately becoming a very common place surgery. Be well!

Fair, today is the first I've seen this post. Very sorry for my delay You being one of , if not my favorite, all time poster. It was easy to see what a quality individual you are . You can be sure I'll be answering your request.
I will not offer you good "luck".....I will say you have done your due diligence....you have a great surgeon....you have enormous support....and you appear to have a great attitude! Just remember, same as rehabbing a sports injury....attitude plays an important part of your journey. When I was told I had cancer I was probably overly nonchalant and had no fear I wouldn't win the battle. The mind is a powerful tool. I do not remember you being a debbie downer.....you WILL win and I look forward to your continued contributions to our our Penn State family!

That put's my impending cataract surgeries into a proper perspective. Good luck with your surgery and cardiac rehab. I'm sure you'll pull through and be better for it, Fairgambit!
So Gambit: How are you doing? You said in your OP that you did not want to post the time and place of your surgery, and I get that. But I'm wondering if you are post-op at this point, and if your rehab is proceeding well. I'm sure a lot of other posters are as well. Let us know when you have a chance.
Speaking from experience, cataract surgery is just a day in the park.
Cataract surgery takes about 15-20 minutes per eye. You get a few eye drops to numb the eye(s) and you are in and out of the building very quickly.
Not recommended to have cataract surgery performed on both eyes, of course the benefits are convenience and costs. I had mine done at Wills in Philly.
