This is a really bad poll. I neither think he will win the SEC (Florida), nor think he will be fired this year. I expect Nate Oats is the next coach at Kentucky, which means Pope is kept on a tight leash but not fired outside of a catastrophe this season. Why? Nate Oats’ buyout drops to $0 immediately following the 2028 season.

Sorry, I cannot edit the poll. It is a bad poll, because I messed it up.

This is going to be a terrible season. Pope hasn’t been able to coach good players. And can’t manage good or bad players.

Now he’s assembled a team that couldn’t win the old metro conference.

Pope doesn’t do anything well as a head coach.

Yeah the poll is silly, he likely won't win the SEC since Florida looks like the beat team in the country, but he doesn't need to win the SEC to keep his job

If we lose 10+ again, aren’t among a top 4 seed in the SECT, don’t win a couple games in the SECT and not a top 4 seed in the NCAAT and get a S16 or better, he will be gone.

Unless he has a great season and does well in the NCAAT I think he’s done. New AD will want his man in there. Then we get to go through another coaching hire. 🙄

I hope Pope succeeds and I believe we’re in for a good season. A top 15 ranking, top 3 seed type of season.
If we go through another hiring process, we’ll be competing with Kansas and maybe another great job or 2. We will all know before Christmas if this team is good enough to keep the coach employed. If it goes off the rails, I’m all for locking up Josh Shertz before someone else gets him.

Who knows? It’s impossible to know right now. Ask me when we are at the midway point of the season. If we are doing well, yes. If not, no. It’s that simple.

I never thought they would pay Stoops buyout. So,??? How could we possibly afford to pay 2 guys not to coach. We have lost 10 games every year but one the last 6 years. Lost 8 that year. 10 loss seasons seem to be normal now. Calipari lost 10 his last 4 years I believe.

I think most die hard UK fans are at a breaking point with the mediocrity we’ve had the last several years. You can blame NIL, can blame Cal, you can blame Barnie, you can blame Pope. Whatever the excuses are hasn’t affected Duke. They have remained a blue blood through all the changes. They win their league every year. They usually have less than 5 losses going into the NCAAT. They continually have high draft picks.

I think that’s the money. They have probably the richest alumni in the country. They play in a 9000 seat arena because they don’t need the revenue a corporate arena provides. They want tickets to be for the ultra elite.
The decision to put the students court side and organize fandom was genius. Now, students who went to games want to continue. Problem is, Duke says tickets are for the elite. You must be an Iron Duke to have a chance at tickets. That requires a 100k donation just for the title.
I argued with a guy here who said…..”We can spend with anyone here at Kentucky “. People confuse fandom with money. Most our fans are from rural areas without a pot to piss in.
I asked him. Please explain to me where these revenue streams would come from. He had nothing. lol.

Another thing besides the money Duke has people don’t realize is team USA. Grant Hill runs it and helps place kids at Duke. It’s why Boumtje Boumtje ended up there when he could’ve gotten way more elsewhere and more playing time guaranteed. They also have Nike backing especially with the GM who is a former Nike employee. Then the head of the NBA graduated from Duke. All the stars have aligned for them to be the flagship team USA/NBA/Nike flagship school. Kentucky can find the money to compete but Duke gets discounts and help securing guys to make it way easier.
