Is Florida on their schedule?
Say what you want about him but hes a great personality, someone will take a shot on him again. He would be great on TV too
Close to mid 60s...you think he can head coach in the nil era even in a mid major?
If he was great TV material, it would have happened years ago.
In some ways I miss that style
He got a fair shake here but not an overall fair shake in his career he was good enough for 1 more chance somewhere
Whether he turned down spots because of ego I’m not sure and, that’s on him but if not he deserved one more shot

When he got the opportunity he so craved, he got lazy in recruiting and alienated most people around him. He recruited a number of less than stellar players for the team.
The coaching ranks are simply too competitive and his behavior and tenure here make him an easy pass.
No coach came in with more excitement and plummeted in the minds of most objective fans, more than Gonzo - for good reason.

I disagree - you are suggesting he deserved another shot. He simply did not.
He was not nearly good enough to overcome the disaster he led at his first P5 job.
If the industry thought he was good enough, he would have gotten another shot long ago. Clearly the view from people who make such decisions is that the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze.

I may well have heard that expression before, but it hit me as very fresh and very good.
Somewhat similar with Mike Rice. Somehow, I don’t think either one of these guys can keep it together during an interview.
During his tenure...was the only time I was embarrassed to be a Seton Hall fan.
He was courting a woman to be his wife...he was not the bobby of st Nicholas toletine pc or manhattan at that point he just felt he was deserving of a high major chance

Gonzo was his own worst enemy. He was an excellent coach who worked incredibly hard to get a major head coaching job. But once here he lost his work ethic and combined with his outlandish behavior he put himself in the position he faced the rest of his basketball life.
He had the potential to be special but the fact that he never reached that level is no one's fault but his own.

Seems to be a guy with a short shelf life who self-destructed. After leaving us, didn't much come out about how Manhattan was beyond tickled to be rid of him?

He coached in the toughest era of the Big East, that'd be his one accolade from his time here I guess
I saw no hInt of excellence in his coaching at SHU. If we had a real AD then, doubt we ignored the warning signs.

I think you misread the post you referred to.
Dan wasn't saying that he was an excellent coach, but that he WAS an excellent coach until everything went to his head. Big difference. The guy did have results as a recruiter and to a degree at Manhattan, but we know everything after that.
PJ had it tougher in the early 80s.

Back then, and I saw it close and upfront no one outworked him. It's how he eventually got two head coaching jobs in D1 BB.
I used to talk to one of his assistant coaches who did not like him one bit. But one thing he always told me....Gonzo was an excellent coach.
Despite his hectic offensive style he yearly had a team that led the league with the fewest turnovers or was near the top.

My recollection is exactly what you and Lloyde said: he definitely had the reputation of being both a good coach and a good recruiter. Obvious ties to all the big NYC HS and AAU programs -- which mattered back then -- from being an assistant at some of those high schools and via his connections to Pete Gillen who he served as an assistant under for several years.
Manhattan was in a rut when he took it over. Fran F. had done well there before he left for SJU, but the guy who came after failed I believe. Gonzo turned things around and gradually returned it to being a strong MAAC program.
So much wasted potential due to his unhinged actions.
His family had a tough life when he and his mom/dad and siblings came to Ellis Island. There his family was taken in by a man named Gonzalez and the family to honor him took his name as their own.

Fans loved his fiery on court demeanor at Manhattan. We didn't know how much of an ahole he was behind the scenes and that is putting it mildly.
He was not a good defensive coach. His offenses did not turn the ball over and wanted to get more possessions and shots off per game than the opponent. That was his approach and he needed scorers and speed to do that effectively.
He definitely had some success, but his ego and paranoia got the best of him. He was a huge mistake for Seton Hall unfortunately in the end. Good for him getting an assistant job. His personality will not go well in the polite south. Hopefully he has matured some and enjoys his time there.
