It’s always amazing to me how the worst people we have in this country seem to be the only ones we want to elect to run things.
In this era of awful partisanship it seems more and more reasonable people want nothing to do with a political career. The nature of it is completely unappealing to most of us. The people it does appeal to tend to be narcissists who believe they know the answer to everything. You have to really get off on the attention to want to deal with all the BS of the gig.

No thank you.

It's like the old question: would you rather be rich or famous. I will take rich and unknown over fame every single time.

Live view of Bins furiously searching for a Democrat who was actively having an affair while seeking reelection.

No, I just find it interesting that folks who were all in on the evolution of a democrat candidate like Platner, who evoloved. now are reacting differently to the negatives in the Paxton case. seems just a little hypocritical to me.

yea I know it's differen.t, always is. searching for a Democrat, one just smacked Maine across the head, how hard do you have to look

And yes, republicans in Texas will line up and vote for Paxton just like Democrats would have lined up for Platner

"Would have" is the operative phrase. Democrats didn't allow it to get that far. Republicans would never do that to a Trump endorsed cxandidate no matter how terrible he was.

Ned: The glaring problem with this ^^^^ analysis is that the Maine Democrats have already given Platner the boot. So "lining up and voting for" Platner is pretty much off the table. Nice try, though.
I guess the operative words "would have" sort of passed you by...but, remember "did" would be operative if we're talking about the primary :)

Objection: speculative.

Where does your absolute certainty about what people ”would have done” come from? Because from my vantage point there was an absolute uproar about his past that eventually led to him stepping down in disgrace.

Contrast that with the GOP where such behaviors not only are celebrated and whole heartedly endorsed, but they also get you a nomination to be attorney general of the United States.

It’s not remotely close to the same thing.

ah, I knew it would be different...why am I the one called out for speculation? I read daily about things trump "will do", like cancelling the elections, or what hegseth or Patel "will do" and somehow never come to fruition.

But here's a good one for everybody...Now, republicans are for mass deportations, and Democrats seem to want the deportations to be only proven criminals.....but there's a bill in the house supported by republicans where they are proposing to provide work VISAs to about 400,000 migrant workers in the agricultural field - seems sort of out of character.

Now, while democrats, as you might expect, are not totally against the bill, they raise the concerns, not about the workers, but that republicans are proposing this only to placate the big agricultural corporations. Which may or may not be true, but, just take the win. Anything to create a "but they" controversy.

Whataboutism..... The Democrats are rightly pointing out that this bill is necessary only due to the actions of the administration.

Similar to the proposed Billions of dollar bailout of agriculture due to the cost increases that were caused by this administrations use of tariffs.

Is Platner still in the race or was he forced by the Democratic party to quit because of pressure?

Sigh. Deja vu all over again.

Ned: The glaring problem with this ^^^^ analysis is that what you are speculating Maine Democrats would have done (in either the primary or the general election) is completely belied by what they in fact did in giving Platner the boot even before the primary.

I don't think the quality of the pool of candidates has changed at all, what has changed is the media economy around politics and the publics ability to be convinced that what they're tuning into is and should be more like The Real World than CSPAN.

Bear, my good man, you might be working too hard and not staying up with the news. A rapid search yielded "Yes, Graham Platner won Maine's Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate on June 9, 2026. However, he later withdrew from the general election on July 10, 2026, following sexual assault allegations, which he denies"

But as long as you're helping your clients make Money and avoid paying taxes, small transgressions like this are worthy of being overlooked. You might not believe this, but I've been guilty of one or two of those myself.

It's funny that Paxton had a bunch of cop props behind him. All men, by the way.
This is why a lot of people find it hard to take cops seriously. All of those dudes standing on stage in support of a POS like Paxton. A criminal like Paxton.

It all comes down to power. Cops feel as if Paxton, rather than Tallarico, will give them more control over their jobs. Why would you sport someone who is, or may be on the opposite side of what you want?

It's the same with Platner and Paxton. Leaders of each party will line up their support for their POS because not doing so relinquishes a seat in the Senate that might possibly give their party control. This isn't the first time something like this has happened, and definitely won't be the last

Good Nazi stuff argument. Paxton is a law breaking, cheating on his wife POS. If you can't stand for something other than that, and you figure I'll hang with him because he'll give me more power, than you are starting to understand why people don't trust a lot of cops.
Dems in the end rejected Platner. Your guy rejected a long time successful John Cornyn because he wasn't fully in the cult. You suck at this.

1. I hate dudes that cheat on their wives. Just get a divorce.
2. Paxton is following the same hypocritical playbook of running on values as a lot of Republicans before him have. Don't wag your finger at people if your own house isn't in order.

not any more. they couldn't stand the pressure. But it's hard to take a position the folks like Sen Warren and future presidential candidate Rho Khanna certainly did.
Plus. Platner is no longer the candidate, no need to support him any longer

Hey, even our Dpic73 was willing to overlook past transgressions when Platner won the primary.

Ok, Ned. I had forgotten, He did make it through the primary. But the main point remains. He got the boot shortly after his former girlfriend went public with the story that he forced himself on her. The former girlfriend seemed like a fairly credible source, and that was all it took. Same thing for Swalwell and Franken.

Meanwhile, tell me about the legion of GOP politicians who GOP voters force out at the first whiff of a sexual assault report. Not Trump. Not Gaetz. Not Kegsbreath. Not Lutnick. I could go on ...

You'll get no argument from me on your last paragraph. Once again, just goes to show the hypocrisy that exists in our daily, and political lives. That's why, for me at least, just calling out members of one party for their statements/actions be they democrats or republicans is nonsensical. Members of both parties are equally guilty of similar transgressions. It's all about power...democrats will support Platner (before they couldn't anymore) because they wanted that seat: Republicans will support Paxton, because they need that seat. Trying to make one candidate more or less of a model citizen is just dumb

He made it through the primary before the circumstances were known. Once they became known the party uproar forced him to resign the nomination.

Massive difference from the GOP to any astute observer. Ned is not astute apparently.

OK, Ned defending his astuteness, and admitting up front he might be wrong...but didn't some democrats, notably rho Khanna continue to support Platner after the first accusations were made? Heck, even our own Dpic73 stood by Platner stating something to the effect that platner had apologized (or something like that).

I'm not in any way defending Paxton by the way.

Simply pointing out once again, that members of both parties will stand by their candidates, no matter the accusations, if they think that person can win. After the primary, once it became obvious that Platner couldn't win, Dems dumped him. Republicans knew before the primary about paxton....they think he can beat Talarico.

There's no higher ground in morality in either of these cases. It's who can win, because party wants the power.

I'm not sure I could vote for either of them...first of all it's too early and i'd like to see the leanings in both the house and Senate races .

What do I mean? Well, i'd like to see either the house or Senate flip to democrats. I like divided government more than 1 party rule. Talarico really is a little weird and Paxton, well we know about him. And, I'd like to see which direction trump goes in the rest of his administration after this war.

I'm lucky in that I don't have to vote for either of them
