Gawd. That and 6-4 were the worst I’ve felt when watching a game in person.
6-4 of course was a slow grinding torture, whereas Minny ‘99 was complete and utter deflation right at the end

One of the worst coaching jobs by Joe that year. That Minny debacle followed by losses to the state of Meatchicken to finish the season with 3 straight losses. All games we should have won.
The only tiny bright spot from that year is I did attend the Alamo Bowl where we beat A&M when 90% in attendance were Aggies, so that was cool.

A lot of bad painful memories of games posted in that one.
Two not mentioned were home games that we should have won.
1992 Miami: pick 6 on horrible decision/throw by John Sacca the difference in the game.
1993 Michigan: Can't score from the 1 on at least 2 attempts, if not more, sealed our fate. Bama '79 Sugar Bowl all over again.

UCLA trumps both for me. 6-4, as brutal as it was, was more frustrating because you knew it was possible. Minny was brutal because you thought it was a national championship team. The Northwestern game after the UCLA game was equally as bad; they were both listless, apathetic and pathetic performances, which I blame mostly on the head coach and staff, but also some on the so-called leaders of that team.
While watching that game, it seemed weird that PSU was so out of synch on both offense and defense.
It was only later that we learned the team quit because Franklin quit caring weeks earlier.
Looking back at that 2016 Tosu game is hard given the current state of “college” football () and Penn State. It was just 10 years ago, but consider the following:

That team was so unprepared mentally to play that game. I’ve watched football long enough to know that a letdown after a big game, win or lose, like Oregon, usually is inevitable. However, most of the time, the better team wakes up enough to keep themselves in the game so that they can win it in the second half. In that game, the defense was so bad in the first half and of course the offense under Allar didn’t produce enough in the first half. That UCLA team was so bad and was being coached by a bunch of neophytes; that has to be one of the most embarrassing losses in PSU history.
Minny was brutal. I was there. You could hear a pin drop in that stadium. As you said, that team came into ‘99 with so much publicity and hype. Then when they dismantled Arizona the way they did to open the season, the belief that that team could be special was real. Minny was a gut punch, but there was still a slight glimmer of hope that maybe a one loss team with that much hype and talent would win out and still play for a natty. The following week’s debacle against Michigan was the kick to the nads that finished the season’s hopes off. Unfortunately, I witnessed that first hand also. Then they went to East Lansing and laid a giant egg again allowing TJ Duckett to rush for 159 yards and four TDs. They looked disinterested and unmotivated. It was my belief at the time, and still today, that Joe should have retired after ‘99.
This is the first PSU team since I’ve been following them, and I saw my first game in 1975, in which I don’t know anything about probably half to two thirds of the roster. Maybe that won’t be a bad thing, but I just don’t have as much of an investment in this group of players as I usually have.Looking back at that 2016 T

Unfortunately, the 99 team was limited offensively, especially at qb, and won a lot of close games against teams like Pitt that you would’ve thought that they would’ve blown out. You almost could see a loss like Minnesota coming. The 96 and 97 teams were better, and they even were limited a bit because they didn’t have an elite qb.
The B10 officials call of PI on a Michigan 3rd and about 20, when we had control of the game in the 2nd half was a game changer. Typical B10 bias. We would have got the ball back with alot of momentum and the lead.
The silence in stadium after the game was one of the weirdest things I have ever experienced in my life. Other than the Minny players, etc. on the field, no one moved no one spoke. After a awhile I started whispering to my Dad, and then laughed and said, "why in the hell am I whispering". Surreal....
Tom Brady was the QB for Michigan the following week which was another excruciating loss.

Yeah, that one put a dagger in PSU’s season. PSU was up 10 points in the fourth quarter and couldn’t hold a lead for the second week in a row. Painful.
It was especially appalling because UCLA hadn't led for a single second all season up to that point. I was at the Rose Bowl for that game and when UCLA scored on the first drive, it was like, 'ok fine, nothing surprising that they'd come out flat in a west coast road game'. But when UCLA then got the onside kick and scored again, it was that feeling that it was going to be one of those Franklin games where they lose to a team they shouldn't, something they had avoided for 2 or 3 straight years.
Franklin was okay after OSU, but not earlier in the year after losses to Pitt and Michigan. I was at the Minnesota game and fans were not happy during that game. Who knows what would have happened if they would have lost their 3rd game that day.Looking back at that 2016 T

99 had a better defense. Higher ceiling because you had three elite players. Larry Johnson should have been the tb in 99. Kevin Thompson was solid but the offensive line was nothing special and they turned Casey into a flake who wanted to run but was coached not to. And I like Chafe but the 99 team lacked a Bobby Engram. However the biggest problem was the offensive line. Way below championship standards.
Agreed. The crowd and the defense were on fire. The game was over. That call gave scum life which was the point.
The offensive line and the weakness on defense was the lack of a dominant defensive tackle. Jimmy Kennedy was too young.

I was not a fan of Jay as a coach. And around this time he also became the program's recruiting director which led to the dark years.
Sometimes the son just doesn't measure up to the father and boy was that evident in this scenario.
