Let's be honest ... Most of those people are black people happy that we hired a black coach. And a lot of them know Ward personally, since he's from Wilson. Being black myself, I couldn't care less. All I know is when he was at small Beddingfield, he did well. When he coached the big boys, he didn't do so well. Maybe we are the perfect fit.
The most important thing is who he gets on his staff with him. I don’t care how much football the head coach knows without a good staff he is a sitting duck.

This later in the season it will be very hard to get any assistants and especality good ones because most are already committed to other programs.

I have not heard about several long time assistants weather they are being asked or wanting to come on or be apart of new staff. I think it’s going to be a tough first year.

Who did they recommend?
Since you know them ask them but they are like most not holding a seventeen year situation against a young guy that applied but as so many others moved out of coaching into other professions mainly for the money to support his family but his records stand for themselves. Both as a player in HS, college and as coach at 3A and 4A schools.

Just met with our athletic director and our principal about providing my company's service to the school, and after all the business talk was done, I flat out asked why did Varnell leave his position as head coach, and it was simply money. $10,000 more, to be exact. Money is what's going to keep Edgecombe County athletics from the elite, unless a school has great donors or happens to catch lightning in a bottle. I'm looking at you, Tarboro. Money is the reason Johnathon Cobb decided to pursue a different carreer. Money is why former standout alum Ashley Davis, declined the job. He gets paid more to coach JV at Northern Nash than what our head coaching position offered. It's why my choice, Carl Smith, declined and stayed at Corinth Holders, where his program is just a middle of the pack team. The fact that we were able to land Pooh Ward from Knightdale is amazing in itself, because he took a several thousand dollar pay cut. Being closer to home (Wilson) is what sold him. And yes, I told them I'd do it for free, but I don't think they believed me lol. The point is, we'll always be a beginner job. There are only head coach in our history that came in with experience was Raymond Cobb from North Edgecombe, and he lives here in Pinetops, so that doesn't even count lol. We need some money around here.

Let's be honest here though, I think I speak for most Southwest faithful in saying that they wanted a head coaching change. Money or not lol. Far to much talent on the previous teams and future teams to lose the games they have lost, and would have more than likely kept losing. That being said, I've seen some swe fans are optimistic about this year. Even had SWE coming out of the East.

Passing the ball is in Ward's blood. He cut his coaching teeth at Beddingfield, when they were an air raid team, and he carried that him at his last stop in Knightdale. They didn't do great as a whole, but his QB threw for over 3,500 yards in his one and only year as head coach there. It'll be interesting to see what he tries to do with a ground game program. I know he prefers passing first, second, and third, and even on defense 😆. As far as us being an East contender, I'm not sold on that. Too many changes for a team that can't catch the ball consistently. My sleeper pick is North Pitt. I think they win the conference and make a 4th rd run.

Who did y'all get to coach? I can't remember. And what can you tell me about his experience?
He was an offensive lineman in college. He has had experience as an assistant coach with a couple of small colleges and was the Coach at Caruthersville Missouri. I like him. He seems to have a good handle on everything.

I might sneak down there if we don't have anything going on that night.
I’ll find out what time it’s going to be and let you know. I told you wrong it’s August 8th. The 14th is a jamboree at Barton College.

Just might try the one at Barton instead. Way closer for me. Are you going to that one?
