How these currents could factor into a drowning scenario
In general, and specifically at this location, the combination of features creates several realistic pathways for someone in the water to get into serious trouble quickly:
• Rip or tidal pull away from shore: Near the tips of barrier islands, tidal exchange between the Mississippi Sound and the Gulf accelerates through constricted areas. A person wading or swimming in relatively shallow water can be pulled into a stronger flow or deeper water before they realize it. Once beyond the immediate nearshore zone, returning against the current becomes much harder.
• Sudden depth change + stronger flow: The documented drop-offs mean a person can step or drift from chest-deep (or shallower) water into depths where standing is impossible and currents are often stronger. Fatigue sets in rapidly if the person is fighting to stay afloat or swim back.
• Circulating / “washing machine” currents: Instead of a simple one-way pull, the local circulation can keep a person trapped in a looping flow, repeatedly carrying them toward and away from the shore or into deeper water. This exhausts energy and can disorient someone, even a strong swimmer.
• Timing and conditions: Local captains have noted that currents around the island can pick up strength later in the day. On a busy holiday with many boats, boat wakes and variable wind can further complicate conditions near shore.
These mechanisms do not require someone to be far from shore or in open ocean conditions; they can occur close to the beach in areas that look deceptively calm or shallow at first glance. The recovery of the body near the last-seen location is consistent with currents that do not transport a body long distances in that particular spot.
