In 2026 Okie State scored 131 points with 2 RD16 wrestlers (Lockett and Facundo) and 2 8th placers (Swiderski and Ryder). Their incoming class has 6 of the top 10 (Jax -- who came early, Dreshon Ross, the Raneys, Zinkin, Mike White). They also added transfers 174 Lorenzo Norman and 184 Bennett Berge. Norman was 21-6 as a redshirt freshman winning Midlands and 3rd at CKLV -- he lost 4-3 to Hamiti and 10-8 to O'Toole. Berge was 4th in 2025. Whichever Rainey goes and Dreshon Ross will be AA caliber out of the gate. Okie State may not have 3 champions this year, but they will have a more complete team. I can see them scoring more than 130 points this year and even more in the years to come.thank you....
Yes.... I have a hard time seeing OKST scoring 131 again
Jax, Vega, Merril, Ross, Robideau, Spratley, Facundo, Ryder, Raney, Lockett, Berge and Norman are enough to get them 2nd place again
but any of their four sophomores falter (and that is very possible) and they take a step back points wise. I am not convinced that Facundo will take a step forward or Ryder (and if berge steps in... not sure that is a step forward). Lockett should improve but in today's wrestling landscape... feel like there is more potential for backward movement than forward movement in Stillwater.
Some of this is more applicable to 2027 than other parts.In 2026 Okie State scored 131 points with 2 RD16 wrestlers (Lockett and Facundo) and 2 8th placers (Swiderski and Ryder). I think that you are right that the haves will have more, but this maybe a bit too big of a leap for a single year.My guess ---
1. Penn State 180 - 40 bonus points in 2026
2. OKST 160 - assumes Ross is freshman AA only 15 bonus points in 2026 (6 from Forrest) - Robideau & Vega = 2 bonus points
3. Nebraska 102 - plus Robinson and Echemendia
4. VTech 101 - 57 points return from 2026 + Bassett, Henson, and Burton (no Miller) --- Seidel, Bassett and Henson big bonus points
5. Iowa 89 - assumes a healthy Crookham, minimal bonus points for AAs (13 bonus in 2026 and 7 points graduated)
6. Mich 82 - lots of new young talent - Mendoza, Wolbert, Lemley, Zepeda, Mantanonas, Sahakian
7. Ohio State 77 - no Bouzakis at 125, Davino, Cannon & Feldman only stars
8. Stanford 71 - Provo, Knox, Valencia, Cardenas, Garvin, Posada
Again we will see. Love your analysis. I think the expanded scholarships, transfer portal and all true freshman wrestling that the top programs are going to score significantly more points than traditionally.I think that you are right that the haves will have more, but this maybe a bit too big of a leap for a single year.
You have the top 8 scoring 862 points. Last year was the record for the top 8 at 775.5. That broke the previous record of 746.5 that had stood for 25 years. An 11% jump in that total when it took 25 years for a 4% increase seems improbable, but certainly not impossible.
I assume this is a reply to me.Sounds like we agree Okie State could match last years 131. For me it’s too early to guess if it is more or less likely. You rightly point out the stars aligned for Okie State last season —- Robideau call and key forfeits to Ryder and Doucet. I thought you would mention Levi MD Norman last year.
We should get an early picture where Norman and Ross stand with the Nebraska match 11/13 (Minto & Ziola) and the national duals (Feldman). Ross really impressed me with his matches against Coby Merrill.
Agreed...They are a contender to place from position 3-7 and certainly a contender for a team trophy. BUT...can they place 1 or 2? The simple answer is NOVT will be a really interesting team to follow with some dudes at the top of their lineup but no, they don't have the depth to compete for the top. they'll make some noise in the chase for a team trophy
First place is a one horse race. Second is a one horse race.Agreed...They are a contender to place from position 3-7 and certainly a contender for a team trophy. BUT...can they place 1 or 2? The simple answer is NO
The team championship is a two horse race...Penn State and Oklahoma State...with one (Penn State) being the clear pre-season leader
Behind them, it gets interesting...
Pre-Season NCAA Tourney Rankings:
3. Nebraska
4. Iowa
5. Ohio St
6. Virginia Tech
7. Stanford
8. Cornell
I see Nebraska 3rd, but after them I could make a case for any of the next 4 to grab the 4 slot. And it's not inconceivable one of them sneaks up to 3rd
Considering Arnold was never able to displace Kennedy or Nelson there just is no way I can picture Arnold as a finalist threat.First place is a one horse race. Second is a one horse race.
With Penn State and OkSt so strong, it's going to be harder and harder to get wrestlers into the finals so a few big point scorers will go longer ways to a team trophy. That favors aggressive teams like VaTech and Nebraska. Seidel, Bassett and Henson could all make the finals and grab bonus along the way plus 4-5 other AA candidates. Nebraska has Minto and Taylor plus potentially McDanel and Robinson snagging bonus.
Iowa has Arnold, Ferrari and Keuter with finals hopes. None score bonus so all their eggs are in the Crookham health basket. A wrestler with an injury history at a school infamous for injuring wrestlers is not exactly what I would have done. I just don't see where their points come from as placing 6-8 gets an AA award but doesn't add a lot of points.
I just don't get Ohio State. A good duel team that looks like a terrible tourney team. There's a chance they don't finish in the top 8. Davino is their only sure fire AA as Hwt is so hard to figure out but they could also finish with 8 or 9 AAs. A bunch of good wrestlers that can AA with the right draw but could also go 1-2 or 2-2.
You are underestimating how terrible 174 projects to be. Until Penn State decides who they are rolling out, Arnold has to be looked at as a potential finalist. After Minto, who is next if not Arnold? Cam Steed? Danny Wask?Considering Arnold was never able to displace Kennedy or Nelson there just is no way I can picture Arnold as a finalist threat.
Arnold is what he is, a tough, well conditioned athlete with practically "zero" offensive skills.

The guy who has zero offense and is going to wrestle 4 or 5, 4-1 matches, is losing a few. WHOEVER wears the PSU singlet will be 10 times more likely to wrestle in the finals compared to Arnold. If Arnold has a really good tournament, 5th sounds likely.You are underestimating how terrible 174 projects to be. Simom Ruiz , Larkin , Norman ,Beau Man, Singleton ,Gaitan , Burton and Jaxon Smith 174 isnt terrible along with Minto , Steed, Wask and Arnold that isn't a bad weight at all add in Duke or Levi 174 is far from "terrible"You are underestimating how terrible 174 projects to be. Well said and detailed (and I agree with every point you made)First place is a one horse race. Second is a one horse race.

I think the question is "can VT outperform Nebraska at NCAAs?"If they get a trophy they will need Sasso or Mullen to AA with 125 133 141 149 157 174 all being AA's they would probably need one more at 197 or Hwt. Do they get a champion ? I think with the depth at 149 that Bassett has a better chance to win a title then Henson does
How about VT vs Iowa?I think the question is "can VT outperform Nebraska at NCAAs?"
To answer that you have to make a lot of early assumptions...but for the sake of argument, here is what I have:
125
Ventresca VT or Robinson NEB
* we've seen this before...head to head, Ventresca seems to find ways to win. In a tourney, its officially an even toss up.
VT 0 - NEB 0
133
Seidel VT or Van Dee NEB
* Seidel all the way
VT 1 - NEB 0
141
Bassett VT or Echemendia NEB
* assumption #1 (Ech going 141). Doesn't matter, I'll take Bassett
VT 2 - NEB 0
149
Henson VT or Shapiro NEB
* assumption 2 (Shapiro at 149). He was too small at 157. I'll still lean Henson
VT 3 - NEB 0
157
Gaj VT or Taylor NEB
* Clearly Taylor
VT 3 - NEB 1
165
Miller VT or Araujo NEB
* assumption 3 (Miller comes out early). If he does...I've got Miller
VT 4 - NEB 1
174
Burton VT or Minto NEB
* Minto. Burton is tough, though
VT 4 - NEB 2
184
Desiante, Foard, Bullock VT or Cochran NEB
* Not sure about who will start for VT, but I think Cochran is a "quiet" AA candidate
VT 4 - NEB 3
197
Sasso VT or McDanel NEB
* McDanel
VT 4 - NEB 4
285
Mullen VT or Ziola NEB
* toss up...probably Ziola.
It's very close for 3rd, with my edge going to the Huskers
Miller won't be graduating early. Nininger 165. VA tech and Iowa will definitely be battling for a spot this year. Currently I give the edge to VA tech for the last trophyHow about VT vs Iowa?
125
Ventresca VT or DeLuca Iowa
* slight edge Ventresca
VT 1 - IOWA 0
133
Seidel VT or Crookham Iowa
* Lets call it a toss up (I have Seidel, though)
VT 1 - IOWA 0
141
Bassett VT or Bailey Iowa
* Easy...I'll take Bassett
VT 2 - IOWA 0
149
Henson VT or Block Iowa
* Henson
VT 3 - IOWA 0
157
Gaj VT or Kennedy, Voinovich or Williams Iowa
* Close here, but I like Gaj
VT 4 - IOWA 0
165
Miller VT or Schubert Iowa
* Miller
VT 5 - IOWA 0
174
Burton VT or Arnold Iowa
* 2nd toss up (although I would have Burton)
VT 5 - IOWA 0
184
Desiante, Foard, Bullock VT or Ferarri Iowa
* Easy...Ferarri
VT 5 - IOWA 1
197
Sasso VT or Ludington Iowa
* Sasso
VT 6 - IOWA 1
285
Mullen VT or Kueter Iowa
* Kueter, clearly
VT 6 - IOWA 2
Even IF I give Iowa the 2 or 3 toss ups, VT is still a better team this upcoming year
VT (with Miller) is a trophy team to me...
Change my mind
Ech 149. And Meyer taking the year off is the word. Hockaday 141. I think Nebraska is 3rd this year. But VA tech if they can make the finals at 3 weights they might beat NebraskaI think the question is "can VT outperform Nebraska at NCAAs?"

I dont hate manning nor Nebraska like some do here but I have a hard time predicting Nebraska to ever do as good as they are on paper. Last year was a fluke.Ech 149. Last year I thought ohio st would be the Nebraska of 2025. This year they could definitely trophy with a nice March peak but I'm not as high on them this year as I was last year. Now if Mendez is back that changes thingsI dont hate manning nor Nebraska like some do here but I have a hard time predicting Nebraska to ever do as good as they are on paper. Last year was a fluke.
I guess im saying VT over Nebraska this year. I also think people are sleeping on Ohio St a little.
That, I agree with. Common rankings have Iowa at 4, but I would have it 4 VT, 5 OSU, 6 Iowa (or even Stanford)I dont hate manning nor Nebraska like some do here but I have a hard time predicting Nebraska to ever do as good as they are on paper. Last year was a fluke.
