I haven't heard him talk of winning "a national championship" in a long time. I think the Indiana miracle with Cignetti lets a lot of coaches on the margins talk big again lol. "We can do it - its coming!"Dude can sell himself and the future like no other. I’ll give him that.
Yup, team should enter to Bruce's "Land of Hope n Dreams".Dude can sell himself and the future like no other. I’ll give him that.
The Indiana miracle also warms the seats of underachieving coaches.I haven't heard him talk of winning "a national championship" in a long time. I think the Indiana miracle with Cignetti lets a lot of coaches on the margins talk big again lol. "We can do it - its coming!"
Agreed. But both things can be true. Schiano just isn't a great football coach. He routinely gets outflanked on gameday and makes utterly head scratching decisions. That's all accurate. It's also accurate that the program wasn't close in player comp due to Hobbs not embracing NIL like winning schools do. Keli has quickly helped in that area with more coming.Yup, team should enter to Bruce's "Land of Hope n Dreams".
I am sure that I am one of the large majority that wants him to win. And maybe we'll see improvement with the things he said we now have...but I heard that before about all the practice fields, the bubble, the Hale Center, the stadium, staff, .. etc..
and it isn't $ that causes his conservative style/strategies AND bone head game day decisions .
ok, let's go! (again).
Man keep drinking GS' kool aid, when has a sub 590 coach after 17 year ever won a NCListening to Greg talk about Greg, the future is so bright, I gotta wear shades.
Greg not talking anymore about Rutgers being a developmental program. Seems like that didn't work. Greg has moved on talk about alignment. Now that the university bosses aligned for football success, winning is just around the corner.
He's not wrong about that. We've never seen this alignment. To truly win big, you need it. It will greatly benefit the next coach, along with the entire sports dept. Don't forget, Keli was handpicked by Tate. There is vested interest in seeing that she's successful.Listening to Greg talk about Greg, the future is so bright, I gotta wear shades.

The only part that sucks is we all know he’s done here. The fans, Tate, Zinn, even Greggy knows. We just have to suffer another year or probably two.
Zinn didn’t hire him so the smart political move is too continue to build the Athletic department and NIL base to attract the right coach. I understand what she is doing, I just wish she showed a stronger hand.
Sure that’s Utopia! Back in the real world where Greggy is an awful coach will see how it plays out.No - thankfully, the first part isn’t true. All parties you mention (except Greg himself I imagine - he’s pretty arrogant) have serious doubts about Greg’s ability to get the job done, but to the point Cali made - he has significantly better resources now than he had in the past, it’s not impossible that the stars could align in 2 years if this season goes well enough for him to be retained.
I’m not saying this is an expected outcome but we are nowhere close to the situation we were in back in 2019 when Ash was retained another season for financial reasons. That roster had no prayer or being servicable and Ash knew before the season he was short lived in the position. This is not Greg’s current reality.
And also - there’s no reason for Zinn to be rooting for Greg to fail. Her job is much easier if he gets lucky with a banner season and buys her more time. At this point, Greg is not exactly young and might even look to end on a high note if he struck gold 2 years from now. Folks are talking about extensions but we’re not even sure he’d want to continue on past 2030 right? Seems to me - absolute best case scenerio would be roster improvement year over year with a planned retirement transition at the end of that contract. Obviously - that would only be in the cards if we have success but that’s likely the outcome that would position us best for the long term future.
There is no stronger hand to show. She's not going to create unnecessary drama just for the sake of it. The smart and prudent play is to do exactly what she's doing. Public support, working tirelessly to raise NIL, and when the time is right, strike. It's the professional move. The only part that sucks is we all know he’s done here. Echoes with the sound of salesmen. Shout out to the late Neil Peart. When I was in high school in the early 90s, we had all the local smaller colleges coming in and trying to recruit my best friend and I. This meant the Ivy League-sized schools and similar (like Holy Cross, and Colgate, etc). I don't even remember what he looked like, but I do remember that the coach that did the best job selling his school was the guy from Columbia, a school who hadn't had a winning season since 1971 and who was best known for losing 44 straight games. This guy sold a vision of a school that was going to be an Ivy League contender every year we were in college. The second best salesman was the coach from Georgetown, who had us both convinced they'd be playing D1 Big East football before our four years were over.
My point is, these guys were all salesmen back then and they are all salesmen now. Whether or not they are good at X's and O's is virtually meaningless in comparison to who they are able to convince to come to their school. And they will do or say anything.
The buyout should not an obstacle to replacing Greg.Bottom line, in my opinion
Zinn will keep Greg as long as he makes RU bowl eligible and if that's the best he can do, Keli will wait till she has enough money to pay the buyout and pay what it takes to bring in someone she considers capable of making Rutgers a top B1G program .
Rutgers is moving into a do it or get out type of program and it's up to Schiano to do it or be out as soon as the money is right or his program starts smelling like a loser to Zinn
Schiano either makes RU a B1G title contender, or sees the door if the best he can do is make a minor bowl.
Yogi Roth asks some good questions, but he is a softball interviewer. Never throws a fastball.
At 20:58 Greg discusses Paterno's pet peeve about his coaches wearing long pants with no socks. Great rule--maybe JoePa could have been more strict about what his linebackers coach did in the showers.
And having 4 people with the same last name is addressed here-cued up.
Interesting, when asked about his kids he didn't say how they are helping RU win but discussed how they are being developed as coaches. SMH. Shouldn't the bloated staff be cut to free up money for NIL?
Greg's buyout might not be a problem, but I think cutting the support staff funds might be a problem for some of the HC candidates Zinn thinks can make RU FB a major player in the B1G..The buyout should not an obstacle to replacing Greg.
Greg's current buyout is slightly below $21 mlliion currently and $17 million after this season.
The buyout expense of approximately $6 million per year over 3 years could be offset by normalizing the cost of Rutgers football's support staff. Replacing Greg could be a positive for the bottom line as other bloat would be removed from the program and ticket sales, which have stagnated under 2.0, would likely increase as the tired fanbase is energized by a new era for Rutgers football.
Agreed and I said so above! I just wish we had the guts to move on from a car crash!
You don't need to be a slick salesman anymore. You just need a bankroll. All kids care about is how much will you pay them. When I was in high school in the early 90s, we had all the local smaller colleges coming in and trying to recruit my best friend and I.
