I feel like Purcell is starting to get his legs under him...

you have the luxury with women's basketball to let a coach learn on the job. He was successful enough to where there wasn't any talk of moving on and he is starting to figure out the right combination of players to obtain from the portal. He also can recruit.

I've always said I don't want to spend $$ on women's basketball but don't suck either. He's certainly done that.

Innovative way to fund that new TV.

Up and down tenure but he’s won actual NCAAT games when he’s gotten there. Which is more than Jans can say. And the two years he missed the NCAAT were near misses.

I still think Jans is a better coach between the two. And Sam’s personality is a little too mega church youth pastor-ish for my taste when it comes to the type of coaches I tend to like best. But can’t deny that he’s weathered some roster volatility well and gotten us back to being solid.

I don’t think people realize just how much the program crashed and burned in those two years between Schaefer and Purcell. It’s a minor miracle we didn’t fall off even more than we did.

He would have been more recognized for recruiting if he had gotten Hailey Van Lith to commit.

I’m fine with him. He’ll never be Vic and I doubt we’ll ever get close to those heights under Purcell.

I’d like to see the program progress though. Truth is, I don’t think we’ve progressed much under him. He steadied the ship, but I’m not in love with being a perpetual bubble team.

I don’t keep up with women’s basketball at all. Did Purcell hire staff that can handle the actual coaching part of the job?

The way Purcell sells Starkville and Mississippi State - I wish Lebby would do the same.
If he wins it doesn't matter but I'm still amazed at how little Lebby communicates with his fanbase. Few if any speaking engagements, certainly no alumni meeting tour during the offseason, Rarely does any radio, TV or podcast interviews. If we didn't have SEC media days or in season press conferences that he is forced to do I would hardly know the guy exists.

I don't think MSU Athletics is going to commit the $ (primarily NIL) to Women's Basketball that is necessary to be a consistent top 12-15 team like MSU was Vic's final 3-5 years. The schools that attain this level in Women's Basketball either have almost unlimited resources (Texas maybe LSU) or they are sacrificing resources allocated to other sports for Women's Basketball (South Carolina, UCONN). I do not think MSU has unlimited resources and I don't want to sacrifice NIL from baseball, Men's Basketball for Women's Basketball.

Final Four appearances the last 5 years seem to validate my thoughts 2022-2026
South Carolina 5 Final Four appearances
UCONN 4 Final Four appearances
UCLA, Texas, & Iowa 2 Final Four appearances (Iowa with Caitlyn was an anomaly, but she did get lots of NIL $)
Stanford, LSU, Louisville, Va Tech, & NC State 1 Final Four appearances
The #'s would also probably be similar with Elite 8 or maybe even Sweet 16 appearances. A small group of schools committed to Women's BBALL

Makes you wonder if that decision isn't made for him.

They wonder why season ticket sales are down. Us sucking is the main reason but Lebby's salesmanship certainly doesn't help.
There has been zero effort to get members of the coaching staff out on the road to speak to booster & alumni groups this offseason and last offseason. It is almost like there is an effort to avoid them speaking to these groups. I guess we have to assume that message is being pushed to the staff from either Lebby or the Athletic Department leadership. The oddity is that BOC, Jans, Purcell, & Selmon all get out on the road to speak to these groups.

Wait, is it already "I am ready for basketball season" time of year already??? We haven't lost a football game yet, or am I missing something?

I will say he's been good for at least one "surprising big win" every year and most have been at home which makes for a fun atmosphere. Be nice if he can find a way to avoid the last year FL performances that are not very fun but otherwise, all in on Sam.

The hardest job in America right now is with the MSU football ticket office. Outside of watching K. Taylor there is zero to be excited about. Jordan Belfort couldn't sell our football team.
