"College football playoff winner doesn't define who has the best conference"

It has been 3 years in a row that the SEC has looked like dogshit in the playoffs and once those playoffs expanded, to where they did not just a bye into the semifinals, they have looked even worse.

I think Saban is correct. It is possible to have a couple of national championship caliber teams in a conference that sucks overall. That was more common back in the day before these super conferences emerged. But it is still true to an extent. I disagree with Saban though if he is implying that the SEC is better than the B1G

I agree with Saban. The playoff winner does not define the best conference. Bowl records help more with that picture. In the past 5 years, the SEC is 25-31 in bowls and playoffs if you exclude when the SEC plays themselves. Below are their records against the other conferences.
Big Ten 9-14
ACC 6-8
Big 12 6-6
PAC 12 2-1
Sun Belt 0-1

Last year the SEC was 4-10 in the bowls. Two of those wins and losses were SEC vs SEC in the playoffs. Against other conferences they were 2-8.

I don't necessarily agree with him 100% ... but if its true (B1G os best), the gap is not as wide as most people think. One great way to judge is to look at the draft. SEC gets more guys in the NFL than anyone else, and it isn't even close. Every year.

Here are things we have definitively learned do NOT determine what the best conference is:

1) National championship winner. Only one team. Sample size too small

2) Playoff record. Only a few teams. Sample size too small.

3) Bowl record. Larger sample size. But for some conferences, all the players quit before the bowl game.

4) Head to head record during the regular season. There is no balanced scheduling. Miami stomping a mudhole in Florida means nothing because Florida is down.

Here are things we have learned absolutely determine which conference is best

1) Nick Saban's personal opinion

2) The personal opinions of ESPN talking heads

SEC hasn't done real great in the playoffs the last few years. Big 10 has. Winning is what matters. Playing field has been evened the last few years and the SEC has been a total dud. Draft picks are an excuse and a deflection.

Would you be happy if NU had 8 players drafted every year, but won 4 games a year?

If we had 8 guys who could play on Sunday, we'd win a lot more than 4 games... so that one is a little silly.

Bowl matchups aren't parallel and the team playing in the bowl never represents the team that played during the regular season. The only measuring stick is which conference produces the champions. If the same conference has multiple different teams win in back to back years, they are probably the best conference. We had no problem saying the SEC was best when Alabama, LSU, Florida were winning every year.

Let's go ahead and close up the circle.

3) ESPN employs former Alabama head coach Nick Saban as a college football analyst.

4) ESPN owns the exclusive multi-platform media rights for the SEC.

5) ESPN holds the exclusive media rights package for the CFP and its weekly televised ranking shows through 2031-32.

I think he is right a about have in the NC doesn't make you the the best conference.

Hell I don't even the agree that the bowl comparisons are super valid. Even though the BIG has kicked the most *** during that time.

I think the mistake that most of these coaches, media, and SEC fans alike are having is that they are confusing the most TALENTED conference from top to bottom which I think they might be vs the BEST conference. Those two are not the same thing.

I haven't checked recently but I think the SEC still has more players drafted than the BIG. But their is more that goes into BEST than just talent.

The fact that the BIG has had 3 straight different NCs alone is crazy. Add in the bowl record, head to head and at some point it's indisputable.

I'm not gonna lie the BIG plays some of the ugliest unappealing football for me. Watching Northwestern vs Rutgers at 11 is hard to stomach. If I'm being honest if it's not the top of the BIG or is of course the BIG can be a tough watch.

But at some point credit has to be given where it's deserved.

From 1970 - 2001 I laughed at my friends who would argue about the best Conference. That discussion was for losers and losing programs IMO.

Saban arguing about it obviously proves me wrong in that area. But my point is - I couldn't care less about who has the best Conference. I care about Nebraska becoming elite again someday and letting the Conference talk fill the room like Charlie Brown parents voices. Background noise.

Don't.......care. The rules for picking the top Conference always change depending what channel you're watching - and the rules are subjective, even when using objective data.

GBR.

Member schools
B1G - 18
SEC - 16

talent gap is still wide

B1G right now is the most top-heavy conference in college football history

something like 85% of the B1G’s draft picks came from 6 schools
I don’t disagree. I think the top 4 of the B1G has an edge over the top 4 of the SEC, an idea supported by recent CFP results. But after that, there’s a larger drop in the next tier for B1G than the SEC. Of the teams in that next tier, the SEC teams have more NFL talent than the B1G teams. The B1G teams in that tier generally have some pretty good coaches, so they are still gritty and not easy outs until they are just outclassed by better talent.

Maybe that will change over time if the B1G keeps outperforming the SEC in the CFP. When the SEC went on their multi-year run of MNCs, their lesser teams benefitted by association.

I would say the mid of the conferences line up pretty well last year as well. Dip down to Iowa and Illinois and they could play and beat the mid SEC (Vandy, Mizzou, etc) The bottom dwellers (NW, Purdue, Rutgers, MD and sadly UNL) is where there could be an argument but do we really think Miss State, Auburn and SC and Florida are going to be decisively better than the teams listed above. I’m not sure I buy that as an absolute.

Iowa is a premier B1G program by every metric (top 6)

So there’s no dipping down to include them like there is with Vandy and mizzou

I mean...I cheer for my team to win it all...

I don't care about draft picks. I care about wins.

If anything, the SEC looks worse, having all that talent and still getting smoked over and over. Have they even made a title game since it expanded to 12?

It's obviously ESPN. When you own one conference you are going to push them. Saw them crying this past year at the 2 G5 teams who got into the playoff. NO Texas and Vandy shouldn't be in.

I will give the SEC credit, they copied the Big Ten method. They started to jock themselves up over and over...they created the notion of how football is just so different in the South and how the way of life was different and how everything is centered around football.

The Big Ten did all that for years and had the insane media coverage too. The SEC copied it and for 20 years it worked. Now that they can't win titles...they are starting to whine. Just like Big Ten fans started with the old "Well, we have a better bowl game record, who cares who won the title" mantra for a bit.

Yes and no . When the SEC was winning the NC he claimed the SEC was as a better conference than others. Now there not so the team winning is not from the best Conference? Can’t have it both ways . I like Saban but he is sounding like a little girl on this .
