1st offense - ejected, but no suspension
2nd offense - suspended 1st half of next game
3rd offense - suspended all of next game

I really like no suspension for 1st offense. But think a 1-game suspension for 2nd offense and multiple game suspension for the 3rd offense would be more appropriate.

My only complaint is that a 1st offense in the first quarter is more penal than a two offenses that occur in the waning minutes of a game.

Just make the 1st suspension the next two quarters. I'd love for it to be actually two quarters of time. I don't think that's really more of a pain to implement than suspending whole quarters. Are refs really checking during live time to make sure a suspended person isn't playing when they're not supposed to? Or does nobody cheat because enough people are watching that you're virtually guaranteed to get caught?

I think a half is a good deterrent for a first offense. Just too many instances where the defender can't really adjust in real time to what the offensive players is doing. 2nd offense can be another half. Third offense in a season and I think multi-game suspensions are fine. I think it's pretty unlikely a defensive player would have three times in a season where there wasn't a way to avoid targeting.

Instant replay has been instructed not to look for it between plays anymore. That is a big change.

If mitigating player injury is really the issue this is trying to deal with here, the first offense penalty is a joke .

If a guy hasn't learned or is just deciding to ignore the directive I would think 3 times is a bit excessive. There needs to be financial fines now they they are getting paid. a fourth time and you are obviously brain damaged and too stupid to play and your gone for your own safety.
The simple solution would be to force them to forfeit their prorated pay for any quarters/games missed, but alas… we’re still pretending that NIL/rev sharing isn’t a paid salary

Fact:

You missed the last part:
” *unless the player is on the MSU team. If the player committed the offense, then move directly to the 3rd offense. If the player is on the receiving of the targeting, wave the foul off.”

In addition, if enforcement of any level of this rule may aid in a team like Mississippi State (MSU) defeating a playoff contending team, then wave off flag against opponent and charge MSU with delay of game for causing officials to stop the game to review.

I can't take anything on targeting seriously until the refs are allowed to evaluate whether or not a player could have made a play differently. A lot of the penalties are "wrong place wrong time" and shouldn't be penalties IMO. Is there grey area that could be misapplied or applied inconsistently? Yes. Is ejecting a player bc he was in a bad spot and still tried to make a play like he's asked to worth avoiding bad refereeing? No.

Wrong place wrong time can be a penalty. Ejection is overkill.

Also, if they're gonna call it, it need to be called on offensive player if he ducks his head for contact with tackler.
If both guys duck their head, why would it always be a defensive penalty?

Yep. There's a handful of plays in any game where you could call targeting on a ball carrier trying to bust through a tackle or the line with the crown of his helmet. Rarely ever called and more times than not the ball carrier could have easily led with his facemask instead. I'd rather those get called than a defender making helmet to helmet contact in a mass of players or a scrum. You don't have near the same control of your body in those situations.

That's what it should boil down to - if you have control of your body and meet the targeting thresholds, then penalize and apply the ejection rules. If you don't have control of your body (because football is chaotic and violent things happen), penalty only. No consideration for ejection.

Why I've always wondered if a defensive player's pinky grazes a facemask it's a penalty, but a RB can stiff arm a defensive player right in the face mask and that's just good football.

Targeting should have 2 levels. Flagrant 1, Flagrant 2 just like personal foul in basketball .
unnecessary contact level 1 -15 yards
unnecessary and intentional contact level 2-15 yards and suspension for game

I never understood the QB slide right before contact. Always draws the targeting call. Back in the day QB’s had to slide early to declare themselves “down”. Now they just slide last second and get rewarded for it. Defender gets screwed. What’s to stop RB’s from doing this?

Unless a guy targeted three people on the same play
That's how we used to get after it back in the day.

I've decided I can be nostalgic for the violent days of yore and also on board with removing the practice now. I have a teenaged son who got through high school without the dozens of micro-concussions I enjoyed in my time.

The game is not at all what it once was. And I'm glad. I guess.

Yeah, this ain't that difficult. It's amazing how bad college football can screw itself up.

"1st offense - ejected, but no suspension". If this is the case, what stops a coach from telling a meathead benchwarmer to annihilate the other team's QB or #1 receiver in the 4th qtr.

What’s to stop him from doing that in the 1st quarter now? So what if the meathead benchwarmer sits out the next game.

Penalty box for a full 15 minutes of game time. Their team plays short with 10 players.
