Wish Beau well. Hope he has success.

The issue I have with the system is that Beau had to basically take his best offer before PSU went into the playoffs. I think he would have helped in the ND game with some ball control series. If they win that, he could have helped vs. OSU as well.

The system is screwed up. Imagine NFL teams losing guys to free agency before the playoffs begin -- asinine.
The "system" was - and is - FUBAR. Obviously.

But Beau was NOT forced to "basically take his best offer before PSU went into the playoffs".
Nope - that was Beau's decision (and, if some of the rumors are accurate - big IF - also somewhat HCJF's doing)

He was not forced but as I understood it, he received a very lucrative offer and the transfer portal in December is like the game child's game where everyone has to find a chair when the music stops.

Agree the way the dates were set he kind of had to jump to his best opportunity at the time. NIL and the portal are managed about as poorly as it can be currently. Those thinking otherwise are fine, but I doubt many had 500k+ offers to move or a job offer for 1.5 million at 20 years of age. They are also typically fans which is short for fanatics and they expect 100% loyalty, but aren't stepping up to pay the difference either. Kid stay here for 500k or so or 1.5 million.....a fan would put out BS of how loyal they are, but in reality.....he made the right move for his future. No debt, hopefully he invests well, and has a productive life as a good human.

The older I get the more I cringe at folks wanting loyalty for things they were never once offered in their lifetime. At some point people need to get a grip and realize these kids owe it to themselves for the work they put in and their families that they can help out. In all walks of life, bind loyalty to anything is pretty stupid.
Please stop. Pribula could have waited before transferring like several other QBs whose teams were in the playoffs did. I hope he does well at Virginia.

If he finds another year of eligibility, which in the Wild, Wild West of college football these days probably is possible, my guess is that he’d probably be on his fourth team in as many years; he was born a ramblin man.
Remember this is college sports and the participants are students. That means you can stay for 6 years while getting paid $millions.

In a different timeline when Allar declares after the 2024 season, does Beau beat Oregon and is James still here?
I don't know if Beau would have beat Oregon but he probably wouldn't have lost to UCLA, NW, and Iowa.

IMO the two biggest reasons for the disastrous record last year were the injuries to Allar & Rojas. Then add the confusing defense employed by Knowles.

I don't blame Franklin for the injuries but he is definitely responsible for hiring Knowles, poor recruiting at LB, and not having a backup QB ready to play. When Allar got hurt it reminded me of when Clifford got hurt and Roberson came in and couldn't get a snap call right.

He would've given Oregon more to think about and created some chaos with his running dimension. My guess is that PSU would've scored more points in the first three quarters of that game with him and ended up winning; again, Allar played terribly in a "big" game until the fourth quarter. Despite their record, that Oregon team was very beatable, and PSU should've beaten them regardless of who played qb.
For whatever reason Allar often looked unsure of himself. He often took most of the shot clock reading his wrist ban. He seemed much more effective in a 2 minute offense than he did when he had lots of time. He also had a habit of failing in big moments. Couldn't score from the 5 yd line twice vs OSU. Had a chance to win at the end but threw an INT in the end zone. Made a great comeback effort vs Oregon in the BiG title game but lost in the end on an INT. Threw ridiculous INT to end the ND playoff game. He was a big head case. The question is how much was him vs how much was his coaching.

I felt the team was SIGNIFICANTLY UPGRADED at QB when Grunk replaced Allar - at least after the immediate jitters of being thrown into the meat grinder part of the schedule, with zero experience (and all the "numbers" would support that, FWIW).

I expect they may have beaten Iowa w Allar (though the issues in that game were primarily that PSU D got ripped by Iowa's run game - even their gimpy QB). Grunk was on a VERY short leash and severely limited in what the offense allowed him to do.

They probably hung in there longer vs OSU by having Grunk at QB - but, again, the defense!? (Did Sayin complete every pass he threw? Had to be damn near 100% completions, and many downfield for big yards)

Indiana - I expect there is about zero chance that an Allar led-offense gives PSU the very real chance to have won that game (again, defense wet the bed after the offense put PSU up late)

And, obviously, Grunk was lights out in the final 4 games - against far better opposition than what Allar faced (and performed sh***y against) in the first three games

He could have also missed out on that payday too possibly. I’m not sure why old men still think these guys need your approval to make financial moves for themselves.

It’s almost like you think you own these guys…..so Please stop yourself. This isn’t 1969 Wally. The Beav is grown up and the world changed. These HS recruits and players are perpetuatal free agents. That is the problem, not caused by them but by the NCAA and dinosaurs thinking these kids were just lucky to have a ship. This is due to decades of NCAA incompetence but yeah Beau should have been loyal your family and feelings over his? lol, dumbest take ever. I’m sure you would advise your 20 year old to turn down a 7 figure payday….online it’s super easy to do.

The "old men" you are referring to don't think players need their approval to transfer. They just think the system they largely paid for has gone to crap.

It has gone to crap but that isn’t on the young men. It’s on the greedy NCAA, conference, and University leadership for not addressing the pay for play decades back. They all love their high paying gigs and massive TV contracts but in the end their greed brought about this change. They could have given the players better options earlier.

Greed at the top always trickles down until it doesn’t and then change comes out of necessity. Blaming the players here is nuts. When people know their wealth and power in numbers they become that much stronger. I’m not saying people need to love it but Beau getting 1.5 million to go was a sound decision for him at the time.

When did you ever hold off on a million dollar offer that was time sensitive?
He didn't have any offer at that point. Nor did he get anyone close to 1M from Mizzou.
All that happened was he was told Allar was staying and he reacted emotionally
This was all contrived by Franklin...he wanted to use Beau to hopefully create change. Beau was just the puppet.
The timing of Allar’s announcement was very coordinated.

We agree that it isn't the player's fault. We also agree that the NCAA managed things poorly.

That said I don't understand the current system. I thought the original court decision allowed athletes to make money from their name, image, and likeness much like any regular student is allowed to hold a job even if it's something like creating a podcast. The original rules were that the university couldn't stop players from making deals but they had to do it on their own. Now the players are just given money by the university and also by 3rd party sponsors without having to work for it.

I totally agree. The original concept of NIL was for players to be paid for other entities making money from selling jerseys with their names on the back or their images being used in video games, which was entirely appropriate. It never was intended to be a play for pay like SMU did in the early and mid 80s, and for the second string guard to be paid in the same way as a star even though that second team guard's jersey isn't sold in the bookstore or his image isn't used in video games or he doesn't endorse a product.

Also, the current transfer rules have turned this sport and others into a complete mess such that you have a guy like Pribula who now is at his third school in as many years. There really needs to be some restrictions on the transfer process, such as the number of times that you can transfer, and maybe not being able to transfer to another conference school like the former Duke qb who now is at Miami.

The problem is you can’t really describe the current system as it feels like they are making it up on the fly. It’s the Wild West and the sheriff aka the NCAA only cares if he still gets his cut. I root for PSU, but know this sport is a joke when it comes to fair play. That is nothing new as they need those $$$$’s flowing in.

It was Beau’s choice to leave. Your point isn’t wrong, it’s just that if he wanted to stay he could have. I like to think that I would have stayed but of course I’ve never found myself in such a situation.
Stay and be a backup to Allar for another year then be the guy in '26 (at least that was the projection at the end of '24). That is a long time. He made the best call for himself but yes, he could have stayed.

Franklin was so hell bent on Allar being the guy really from when he was recruited that I think Patrick Mahomes could have shown up and he was not budging from Allar. Ironically he had an OC with a system that better suited Beau not Allar. Maybe not ironically but the better descriptor is pathetically that a HC being paid $8 million a year can't see this and as a result can't develop a 5 star QB. Beau knew by the time the 2024 regular season ended that he was looking at being the backup in '25. With Beau we possibly win vs ND but who knows. Allar was going to play that final series whether Beau was there or not and he threw the pick. Then we get to 2025 and Allar doesn't improve. Beau was not going to play much at all versus Oregon and Franklin was sticking with Allar as the starter.

Looking back Beau made the right choice. He avoided the dumpster fire that was 2025 then the coaching change where he was probably going to leave then anyway as Campbell brought in his guy, Becht.

Leaving was fine. How and when he did so was a very different choice then just the two options you listed. Beau had his own dumpster fire doe the record in Mizzou

That raises a good question. The idea was that regular students are allowed to make money on the side so why can't athletes do the same? Is transferring between schools the same thing? A regular student can drop out of one school and transfer to another school without restriction so why can't athletes do the same thing?

Of course one difference has always been that regular students pay to attend college. Athletes can't be forced to accept a contract but if they agree to a contract shouldn't they be bound by contract terms that include a 3 or 4 year committment?

Who's to blame for letting NIL dissolve from endorsing a company's brand to pay for play? Is that the joke known as the NCAA?

Yes, put restrictions on the transfer portal. One in your career and if you do a 2nd then it reverts to you sitting out a year like the old days.

They shifted all the power and leverage from the school to the athlete. I am fine with the athletes getting paid and transferring but put some freaking regulations in place for crying out loud.

First off, if you are going to do pay for play which is never ending now then put a salary cap in place or something like what the professional franchises have to at least attempt to level the playing field. I am stunned and disappointed that no one has bothered to try to clean this up at least a little bit with some guardrails.

Second, I like the idea of a contract for some length of time prior to transferring or you owe back your NIL. First two years at the school that recruited you. I still want a limit on how many transfers, you get one without having to sit out a year.

This has been explained countless times
James immediately turned it into "this is unfair". Allar had no reason to announce his decision then--see when everyone else announced their decision to return. James saw this as an opportunity to go to war over the portal dates (which he always complained about) and used Beau as the pawn. It was a great play by James. This isn't an insult to James at all--this is one of the best/smartest things he did during his tenure.
James didn't care if Beau left--Beau was never going to be his guy.
Why do you think this was some attack on someone? Beau was just too emotional to wait and James knew he could use it. Worked out for literally everyone.
