Again, if he did that at a major in 2026, he likely gets penalized. Thankfully for him, he did it when they weren’t enforcing anything. How is this such a difficult concept for some to understand?
That is possible if he can conceal his cheating a little better.
I've played quite a few rounds with gents that played on Tour and know some rules officials too. Two things I have heard over and over: 1) If you "self-cheat", the other pros will never forget it and you are labeled for life.....but 2) if you can ask an official about your situation and they give you a favorable ruling, even on something you think is borderline "cheating", that's ok.
The "why" behind that is easy: these guys are so good, that if they can create a more favorable shot you are gaining on the field. So"self-cheating" is taboo, but asking for a favorable ruling is fine because you didn't do it yourself and if you get a break, so be it.

Now that I have a better understanding of the rule it did seem that his back swing was improved by his walking and in some spots stomping around behind his ball.

Xander is always skirting the system. At Quail, he was in the middle of the woods, but a portion of the scoreboard was between him and the green, so he got a drop outside the woods and had a free ride in. Look it up.

It's called line-of-sight and it doesn't matter what jail you're in, you're still entitled to it. And I'm sure he had a rules official there making the call for him.
I am smart enough to know the rules. So is Bryson, he just chose to break them.

I think it was a dumb local rule to have in place..but all 156 guys played under that rule, so how can someone really have an issue with the ruling?
