Has Virginia Tech improved to the point where they will be competing with the big boys next March?

Looking at the improvements to the VT program for this upcoming season, do you all see them as a legitimate top 5 contender?

Here's how I see it...I already have handed the Nittany Lions and Oklahoma State the top 2 spots...the next 5 spots aren't as clear

MY 2027 NCAA TOURNAMENT TEAM RANKINGS (PRE-SEASON)

1. Penn State
2. Oklahoma State
3. Nebraska
4. Iowa
5. Virginia Tech
6. Ohio State
7. Stanford
8. Cornell (where will Shapiro end up?)

Before I ranked VT at 5, I had to take a HARD look at their lineup and make 1 big assumption...

125 Ventresca Will AA
133 Seidel Will AA
141 Bassett Will AA
149 Henson Will AA
157 Gaj Will AA
165 Melvin Miller Will AA...this was an assumption...will he pull a "Jax Forest" and arrive at VT January 1?
174 Burton Very possible AA
184 Desiante or Foard Likely to score points (WYO transfer Foard was a HS powerhouse a year ago)
197 Sasso Will he shake off the disappointing 2026 finish? Surely will score them some points
285 Mullen Fringe R12/Blood Round guy...should score points

Either way, I see this as a top 5 team that can challenge for a team trophy. I'd like to hear your thoughts

Seidel, Bassett, Henson - all project to be very big point scorers and that is what carries you to your finish. Some others are likely AA candidates, but guys who are 6-8 are just as likely to not. You may get one who overscores, but likely balanced out with others who get bad draws or take an untimely loss and cancel that out. If you have a great tournament, you can bump up a couple slots.

If the Mel Miller assumption comes true - he's not Jax in my opinion. And it's harder to do at 165 than 133. Is he any more decorated than Lockett coming into last season? Debatable. So, I'm not putting him up there with Seidel, Henson, and Bassett.

Three big guns is trophy territory, but not sure it is as good as Nebraska or Iowa at this point and certainly not close to OK State nor in the same universe as PSU. I don't see anyone else being labelled as a big boy at this point - tOSU is not going to be all that good and Stanford gets some love, but they need a near perfect tournament like last year to do anything - more likely to fall back this year.

My guess ---

1. Penn State 180 - 40 bonus points in 2026
2. OKST 160 - assumes Ross is freshman AA only 15 bonus points in 2026 (6 from Forrest) - Robideau & Vega = 2 bonus points
3. Nebraska 102 - plus Robinson and Echemendia
4. VTech 101 - 57 points return from 2026 + Bassett, Henson, and Burton (no Miller) --- Seidel, Bassett and Henson big bonus points
5. Iowa 89 - assumes a healthy Crookham, minimal bonus points for AAs (13 bonus in 2026 and 7 points graduated)
6. Mich 82 - lots of new young talent - Mendoza, Wolbert, Lemley, Zepeda, Mantanonas, Sahakian
7. Ohio State 77 - no Bouzakis at 125, Davino, Cannon & Feldman only stars
8. Stanford 71 - Provo, Knox, Valencia, Cardenas, Garvin, Posada

I don't see Ok.State getting 160. They would need to pick up 30 points from last year. Hard to see where they get them.

125 13 points (Spratley scored 17.5 in 2025) -- possible small pickup
133 26 points little room to increase even if Jax repeats
141 & 149 22 (Vega) and 6.5 (Swiderski) -- even if Vega wins at 149, difficult to expect any gain here
157 20 -- Robideau needs a repeat to increase
165 1.5 Lockett (or Swidesrki) expect solid pick
174 1.5 (Facundo) Chance for some points
184 8.5 (Ryder) Berge would need to place 6th to match
197 17.5 Merrill needs to finish second to stay here
285 16.5 (Doucet) -- Ross would need to be champ to pick up many points

Thus, hard to predict much if any gain (and possibly fewer total points) from 125-157 and 184-285 with only 165 and 174 standing out as weights where much gain seems likely.

125 + I will agree with Spratley 16-17 points
133 (-) I don't think Jax wins it next season and that subtracting points (Ono / Blaze, Seidel, knox, davino ) this is a stacked weightclass and Jax is elite but so is Ono and blaze
141 (=) Raney- i lean to a subtraction bc that weight class is probably going to be stacked
149 (=) If SVN beats Vega... subtracting points / but lets call it the same
157 (-) Robideau... i feel like is also a better bet to lose points than he is to gain
165 (+) I do expect Locket to improve
174 (+) Facundo some minor improvement but hes not beating Minto, PJ, Wask, Montanona, Ruiz and more / hes a low AA
184 (-) I think Berge will be hard pressed in this years class (Rocco, Maxx, Angelo, Sinclair, Montanonoa, Rylan Rogers, campos)
197 (=) I think Merrill can be 2nd again (but Novak, Little, Gabe Arnold, Camden McDanel, Mac Stout, Posada and more could mean a slip)
HVY (-) I think Ross could do come close to doucett)

Feel like they have more potential to slip a little than they do to improve
Plus Nebraska will thrown a monkey wrench in things for OKST this year

I think Robinson, Antrell Taylor, Enchemedia, Minto, McDaniel.... they could all displace an OKST wrestling
IDK... just feel like OKST will take a small step backwards this year

I agree 160 is optimistic... (I gave them best case to match against expected Penn State) They are clearly 2nd place...

Points. Place
Sprately 13 4
Forrest 22 1
Raney 11 5 --- better than Swiderski??
Vega 22 1
Robideau 22 1
Lockett 11 5 --- better step up or be replaced
Norman 10 6 --- Big step up from Facundo
Berge 9 7
Merrill 18 2
Ross 11 5 --- Feldman and Keuter seem to be getting worse...
149 (plus some bonus)

And Okie State is like Penn State with 2nd string AAs --- we are the only 2 teams totally stacked multiple deep --- both could have an injury and almost match with a replacement... if Iowa loses Crookham and they drop to 7th

Worst case for Okie State is probably 130 --- still 30 points ahead of Nebraska or VT.

But! Ohio State won a invitational dual tournament last year, and that performance got Tom Ryan the Big10 COY award. Surely you jest when you state Ohio St isn't a big boy.
Of course, that might explain the COY aware. Generally when an also ran overperforms they catch a few accolades.

160 points has been exceeded 4 times. Penn State the last 3 years and Iowa once. Okie State isn't scoring 160 and not winning the title. In other words, they aren't scoring 160.
I think times have changed… NIL, revenue share, unlimited scholarships. Both PSU and Okie St have a legitimate shot for 10AAs and will continue so for the next few years at least. I agree Okie State will probably not score 160 points this year. I do think they will score more the tOSU for the best 2nd ever. 150+ points are going to be the norm for 1st in the NCAA championships going forward.

7 of the 10 champions last year were PSU and Okie State.

Edited for clarity

If we look at returning NCAA points:

#TeamPtsNot included
1
Penn State
155.0
Ono, Desmond, Kasak, Henckel, James
2
Oklahoma State
109.5
Ross
3
Nebraska
95.0
Cochran, Ziola
4
Stanford
78.5
5
Iowa
58.5
DeLuca, Williams, Estrada, Ludington, imports
6
Ohio State
54.5
Shaw
7
Virginia Tech
51.5
Bassett, Burton

The first 3 are pretty well set in that order.

VT is likely 4th. Their floor should be 75 pts with Bassett and Burton in the lineup, and Ventresca returning to the podium. But they don't have enough to catch a healthy Nebraska -- they're not getting anything out of 165 or 184, and Mullen has gone 1-2 at the last 2 NCAAs.

Stanford is likely to regress -- for starters, Valencia won't be favored to repeat. But enough to fall below 5th?

6th/7th is likely between Iowa and Ohio State. Iowa's total includes Crookham's previous 3rd place finish -- generous with his injury history and the 133 returning field; if he's injured again, DeLuca + Ludington aren't making up his 13.5 pts. anOSU probably beats 54.5 points with Bouzakis up at 141, Kilkeary at 125, and Shaw in the lineup, but a lot would have to go right for them to finish top 5.

No one is passing PSU. No one is passing Okiest.

And it dang sure won't be Nebbie. Robinson in the meatgrinder that is 125. I wouldn't trust Ech or McDanel. Trelli ain't beating Robideau or Duke. And Minto SHOULD win it. But I could also see a James v. Norman final as well.

Brain and typing fingers not on the same page : )
Psalm guy, I attended a Coaches Caravan in NJ the first year of CJF. I attended only because Cael was one of 3 coaches appearing. I put in a question for Cael (you had to write down your question before the luncheon and put it into a fishbowl, then he answered the questions after lunch). I asked how it's determined whether to begin a dual meet at 126 (!) or agreeing on another starting weight. I was showing my age because there used to be 126 years ago, I believe. Cael was very kind to answer the question by stating, "Good question. How do we decide if we start at 125 or another weight...." He's such a good person.

Each weight - 22 + 18 + 15 + 13 + 11 + 10 + 9 + 8 = 106 X 10 = 1060 points. There are plenty of points available and they are concentrated in the top teams. With expanded scholarships PSU & Okie State will have 9 or 10 AAs. Again, 7 of the 10 champs were PSU or Okie State. I expect similar results this year (and next).

It seems the consensus agrees that VT is a top 5 team and a real trophy contender. It's nice to see new teams and faces break into the top echelon!

Gonna be a FUN year...3 months and 10 days!

I meant to say (and thought I did) that the FIRST place team will be 150+ for the foreseeable future. Okie State scored 131 last year and has a better team this year (Raney, Lockett, Norman, Berge and Ross are upgrades -- at least on paper). Penn State won last year by 50 points (25 of which were bonus points - 40 to 15).

149 Ryder Block

So... you are probably right on him moving down to 174 but i was hearing that he was struggling to make 84 much less 74?
We will see but 74 is probably where he should be

No one is passing PSU. No one is passing Okiest.

And it dang sure won't be Nebbie. Robinson in the meatgrinder that is 125. I wouldn't trust Ech or McDanel. Trelli ain't beating Robideau or Duke. And Minto SHOULD win it. But I could also see a James v. Norman final as well.
you are probably right and that is the safe bet...
but Nebreska doesnt have to beat OKSt.... for them to finish with less than 160...
They simply have to have one or two of the Nebby guys to finish above 1 or 2 of the OKST guys who finished high on the podium last year for OKST to take a step backwards.... and it is not just Nebby but especially Nebby

This is why I believe OKST takes a small step backwards this year... they probably still finish 2nd but score less points then last year and we win by a bigger margin than last year!

Gotcha.

Meant to say as well - no way Okiest scores 160 points. That would require a PSU-like performance. LOL

ouchhhh.... yes that is supposed to say 110 which is i think where they were last season?
I think we were at 160.

So with a 50 point gap last year... I think our gap will be a little larger this year... I guess that is what i am trying to say LOL

Per Penn State Wrestling Club, PSU scored 181.5 and Oklahoma State scored 131.

thank you....
Yes.... I have a hard time seeing OKST scoring 131 again
Jax, Vega, Merril, Ross, Robideau, Spratley, Facundo, Ryder, Raney, Lockett, Berge and Norman are enough to get them 2nd place again
but any of their four sophomores falter (and that is very possible) and they take a step back points wise. I am not convinced that Facundo will take a step forward or Ryder (and if berge steps in... not sure that is a step forward). Lockett should improve but in today's wrestling landscape... feel like there is more potential for backward movement than forward movement in Stillwater.
