our TV in our den now has a white spot on it. TV is 12 years old and looking to get a new one. Searched for best sound quality for under $1,000 because I don't feel like adding a sound bar.

The last time I looked it appears that many manufacturers have decided to put the bare minimum speakers in the TV so that you will be almost forced to buy the soundbar.
This is why some members are getting added popups
I have two Sony's. One is 17 years old and still looks as good as most TVs that came out a decade later.
I have four Roku TVs that run $250-350 or so depending on screen size. They slow down over time, but I’ve never had one stop working, including the one I had mounted in my garage in extreme temps for two years. That one is 11 years old now. Once they slow, I move them places where I watch less like my office or the basement.

I’ve always been a Samsung customer but I’ve recently bought my second Hisense TV simply because it fit the existing mounting system and I’m honestly impressed with it. Great picture and considerably improved sound, I hard of hearing. I paid $309 for a 55” mini led.
We have a Sony about that age too......sumbitch won't die ! It's about a 48 inch and if I remember right we paid close to 2 grand for it .
Go with the cheaper tv (no so cheap it blurs) and a sound bar. Not much difference in any brand anymore.
I just went through this let me tell ya you WILL NEED a sound bar regardless of what you get. Don't go cheap on the TV do your research on You tube on reviews of all the brands you may be surprised on what you learn about who manufactures the brands and the best units out there.
I sense another volunteer donation drive this week. Seriously, I’ve got an LG OLED & it’s great. I would not go cheap, especially if you’re looking for good sound. That’s going to cost you. Mine was in the $1,200 range (it’s been while though & not sure what the market is like now) & sound is good but not outstanding. But good sound on these ultra this TVs is hard to get.

So, I just bought a Samsung. All of them have quirks.
After I calm down, I might well get another Vizio.
I can't hear anyway, so I have to work around sound issues.

Agree 100%. This is a 10-20 year investment. Don’t cheap out. Do your research & get a good tv with good reliability ratings.
Todays TV's are a five to seven year investment, the technology will run off and leave you behind, IMO.
Just about like my laptops.
Depends on what you want your tv to do. Mine is 4K & there will never be a picture better enough to make me want to buy it. All tvs can stream video no problem. What more do you want? Or will want?
But yeah. If you have to have the latest & greatest technology, you may be buying more often.
I feel like the audio in TVs has gotten better, or maybe I’m just older and less particular.

Same here. Just bought a new 55" TCL Roku about a month ago. Cheap at WalMart and does everything I need and has a really crisp picture. The one it replaced was a cheap Vizio and was good for 11 years. I had a little $$ left on a gift card and they had a close out on an ONN sound bar for a whopping $40 and grabbed that for outside TV for ballgames, I'm amazed how good it sounds for $40

Vizio was bought buy Walmart a couple of years ago. Don’t know what that means for the future of their TVs. I’ve had a couple and while their picture was fine, I don’t like that you had to use Visio’s proprietary App Store for the apps. For some of my older TVs you couldn’t get apps like Disney+ , ESPN or Apple TV because they weren’t available in their App Store.
Enjoy it for the next 4 years or so. You’ll certainly get the chance to buy another one after that.
I don't know which to buy, but this is my input on this. I found a great deal about a year ago on a Vizio - I think it's a 55" or 60". The picture is great. The sound sucked so I did add a soundbar. But my main feedback is, I 17'ing hate the app, or operating system, or whatever you call "the way it works".
The home screen comes up first of course, but it always sends me to the Vizio free movies first, always makes me scroll down and search around to get to YouTubeTV, ESPN, or basically any apps I use most. And don't get me started about how it hides the AppleTV app. It's so frustrating. I've missed the starts of so many games because I'm fumbling around trying to find ESPN. And it's only partially because of my technical deficiencies, most of it is the damn app I swear.
