Can Cade Pieper Transition Seamlessly to Center?

I have high hopes for our OL this year, but I just have to wonder about this move. We have had much success in the past with players switching to center, although it seems there are growing pains and a learning curve. Did not Logan Jones struggle at first with the position? I do not know much about the intracies of the game, but it just seems as though the center has a lot more responsibility than blocking. I hope it all works out for the best and that Pieper and the rest of the OL can find their rhythm in what should be three relatively easy September games. Thoughts, anyone?

Hopefully yes. When it comes to OL I totally trust Ferentz and Barnett. Lester probably has input too. Center is the most important position among the front five, so if he's the best we've got for center it is a good move. It also helps that Pieper is tough as nails.

It is interesting to me that Iowa does such a good job of convincing these players that are great guards to switch to center that outside of Tyler's new center contract this year is well below what an all pro guard can command. Good on these kids for trusting the process, but if I was Pieper I would probably just continue to make myself into the best guard I can.

if a superb guard is far more valuable than a center what would be the logic in iowa doing this? do we have players better than pieper at guard spots?

The logic in making the switch would be that the coaching staff feel as though Pieper at C makes Iowa better football team. I have no idea if that's true or not, but I'd defer to their experience.

Pieper has been getting reps at C in practice for two years even while playing G. That's not something Jones had the opportunity to do. Jones was not only an inexperienced C. He was also an inexperienced player in general. So he was learning the position on the fly while also wading into the deep end of being a starting offensive lineman. Pieper has the advantage of being an All-American before making the switch. While his responsibilities will change, there won't be anything he hasn't already seen with the bullets flying.

It can be a bit of a transition.

But Jones wouldn't be a good example, as he had to be thrown out there way before he was ready.

If Pieper struggles with the transition, he can easily move back to guard. Myslinski slides back to center, although Winter is coming on strong.

One way or another, I expect a really good line

Pieper is athletic as hell, put on ten pounds of muscle. I Don’t see him struggling, probably be a better center than guard.

Cade can be an excellent player at either position. I expect NFL teams to value the versatility.

Most guards in the NFL are massive.
I think guys like lindy,Jones and cade are just big enough to be very good centers in the league but their edge is that quickness off the snap which as centers they can get the best jump on those defenders.
Lindy is making 28/ million yr for next 5?
Center pays plenty
KF is looking out for cade and the Hawkeyes.

To add to that, centers typically get help in the run game in zone schemes. Rarely are they asked to work independently. Most times they're either giving or receiving help in combos to the second level.

thx for all the inputs. a lot of info here that I did not realize, such as Cade taking snaps in practice as a center. To restate what I said above, I have high hopes for our OL this year.

It is probably a premature questins, but any thoughts on whether he comes back in 2027? I would guess that he'd declare for the draft.

My brain tells me players more and more are getting to the NFL as soon as they can so they can get to that second contract before their bodies fail them. However, Gennings Dunker's comment during the draft about being willing to come back to Iowa if he had any more eligibility says it's not out of the question Pieper could come back. Players clearly love playing for Ferentz and Barnett. Most likely, Pieper enters the draft and is a high draft pick.

I could be wrong but didn't Logan Jones transition to C from playing DL? Seems that would be a steeper climb with more of a learning curve than transitioning from OG to C.

As stated above, I trust KF and Barnett when it comes to getting the most out of our OL talent.

Correct.

Didn't help to be nowhere near physically ready either
