Didn't know the Edminton Eskimos were no more. I used to enjoy watching them way back when Warren Moon was dominating for them. The Ottawa Redblacks doesnt sound familiar as a name either.

Still the same team, just a different name. Similar reason like the Redskins change.

The Red Blacks are a completely new franchise. You might be thinking of one of the previous Ottawa teams, the Rough Riders (two words), the one out west is one word, Roughriders.

What am I missing here? Edmonton Eskimos name is offensive but the Ottawa Red Blacks isn't?

It’s a homage to the original franchise way back when that one wore those colors.

And also because the other team by the same name did not like the idea of the old (and original Rough Riders) name being used again.

Yes, the term Eskimo is widely considered pejorative to the Inuit and other indigenous peoples of Canada and Alaska. Elks is a perfectly good alternate nickname. It makes local sense (a lot more than Los Angeles Lakers or Utah Jazz). And it allows them to keep their EE logo.

I believe the poster was asking about the Red Blacks.

Which I explained in my previous post why the new Ottawa franchise with went with that.

And yes, Elks is a very good compromise…tough, big, indigenous. It’s keeps the alliteration thing going too.
