Kentucky shouldn't be in a position where we are paying top dollar for injured players.
THAT is the issue. Paying below market value on a potential payoff ie JQ, sure. That's an intelligent gamble.
Paying top dollar for a guy who's injured when you could just go pay top dollar for a healthy guy......the choice is clear.

I don’t have a dog in this JQ fight. But he was a handsomely-paid portal mercenary who failed to deliver any meaningful services in exchange for his pay. He wasn’t a middle schooler playing for nothing on a CYO team, and let’s not pretend otherwise?
That question was never answered. If it had been, I wouldn't trust it anyway. Those numbers are never verifiable. Nobody knows for sure. There are NDA's involved. And leaks from posturing agents are strategic fantasies.

I get it, nobody owes us anything and the Quaintance family probably wanted to keep things quiet to protect his future, but they made it weird and it felt like he quit. His dad's comments didn’t help.

I blame his dad more than him. And probably his handlers as well. I'm sure JQ wanted to play and was shut down by those around him and instructed to not discuss it outside of vague "working hard to get back" type terms with the media. And I'm sure someone at UK above Mark Pope decided we couldn't risk hurting his draft stock and our image to future athletes by outright saying he was choosing to sit out to prevent further injury. Everything I saw from JQ himself is that he wanted to play, and it was killing him that the couldn't. I have less ill will towards JQ than I do Sharpe, that's for sure.
Do some of you not realize that coaches (Pope included, and certainly not just Pope) say things publicly that they may know not to be 100% true. It’s about putting forward a positive message and not throwing players under the bus. Would it be better if he came out and said “yea, those guys weren’t as good as I hoped“? That certainly doesn’t help him with the relationship with the ex-players or send a good signal to future players/recruits.
As for JQ, I get the gamble. And if there were no other options to spend the money on (at least ones who were potential game changers), I get taking it. Hope it doesn’t happen again, but I don’t blame Pope for taking a swing. And I certainly don’t blame JQ for the injury/not playing while injured. There’s zero proof he was faking anything, and continuing to say he did is a real d*ck thing to do.
Some of the Calophiles on here are desperate to criticize Pope for anything.

Oh ok. I guess i was just living in a different world where this signing didn't turn into a complete money pit.
Soon as the signing was announced I posted on the old board this was a bad move. At best, we were getting a freak athlete for a month who didnt fit at all in the offense. That was at best and if the stars aligned.
Thank goodness Moreno developed way faster than expected. If not, last season would've been a complete and utter disaster.
We don't know how much money he got. If he had not had the setback we would have gotten three months of his services (you did say at best) and most importantly we would have had him for the post season. A recovered healthy JQ would have been a great fit and would have benefitted the team considerably.

I can’t believe grown adults argue this constantly when NIL negotiations are not public records and can’t be confirmed. No one but JQs camp knows what was offered. No one. Probably not even Pope knows for sure what others offered.
The word is "paid." If you're going to continue to try and be the giant board douchebag, policing everyone's posts, get your own house in order first. When you can't spell basic words in the English language, it makes it hard to respect your position on any subject as one formed of any intelligence.

Medical information is protected. HIPAA laws probably kept even Pope from knowing the whole story. Either way, he couldn't blurt it out to satisfy the fanbase need to know.
You can say it in a way where you aren't throwing anyone under the bus but are also admitting maybe you could have made some different choices. KSR asked if there was anything they would change or if they looked back and would have done something different, nope, just wants to do the same thing again.
However much he got was too much. He was always a physical risk that we never needed to take.
I'm sure you have never committed an error before. I never claimed to be perfect and I did not even realize that I had used that spelling until you pointed it out. I am perfectly comfortable with my track record and criticism from the likes of you will have no bearing on that.

Whatever. It’s called being a professional athlete/public figure in America. What’s the piece of advice that’s been around longer than either of us? To whom much is given, much is expected. JQ’s an adult who gladly accepted a handsome payday from UK. I’ll never contribute a dime to NIL so I don’t have any skin in the JQ saga. But maybe quit pretending he’s some sort of victim?
You got me! I guess these are the things you have to say when Popes first year is the “success” of his entire career.
I believe in treating people fairly and whether or not they are getting paid has no bearing on that.

I'm with you. If that dude had any integrity he wouldn't have accepted that payday from UK knowing damn well he wasn't going to contribute one way or another. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.
If Barnhart had pull somewhere and could help UK in some kind of way that would be cool. Like as far as seeding or something. I have no clue if he does. Just trying to think of a way he might possibly be beneficial to UK since he's worth millions to the university even after retirement.
