The Southern Rock was so good. Fantastic music. This music along with the Beatles, Chicago and those other classical music groups were the best. The young people today do not know what good music is. Not even going to start on the bad music today. Taylor Swift is probably the best they can do and to be honest even though she has been extremely popular her music comes nowhere near to Southern Rock and the classical rock music groups. Real music by talented musicians that was as good live, or better, than the recorded version.
Not the fake, productionized crap being pawned off as music today.
Mt Rushmore of Southern Rock would surely include Allman Bros,Skynyrd,Marshall Tucker.Who would be 4th?
I'd have to go with the king of Southern Rock opening acts and the band I believe I've seen more than any other... The Outlaws.
When I think of Southern Rock, I think multiple guitars and The Outlaws surely had that.
I was torn between the Outlaws and as someone else mentioned .38 Special. The latter had more hits but the former stayed more true to genre imo. Can't go wrong with either though.
I guess one could make the argument for ZZ Top but for me it's missing multiple guitars I kinda expect... but that may be just me. That said I would not push too hard against including them on the Mt Rushmore of Southern Rock. lol

True! The Outlaws first album became a surprise hit due to "Green Grass & High Tides". Despite it's long running time over 9 minutes it became an AOR (Album Oriented Rock) radio station standard.
LOVE that band! Chuck Leavell went on to become a Rolling Stone. Not a bad gig if you can get it! Don't recall whether he played piano with the Stones when they played Williams-Brice or not. I bet nobody here will remember this, but Sea Level came up to WUSC.FM to promote their first album. The single on that LP was called "Shake a Leg" and the band asked WUSC to hold a "Shake a Leg" dance contest inside the Russell House.

Yeah they were good. One of them bands best seen live. Dixie Dregs was one of those types of bands as well... best live.
Atlanta Rhythm Section also one of my favs.Had them at The Citadel in early 80’s.

Also really dating myself but I worked at a gas station summers in HS.My buddies stopped by and talked my boss into to letting me an hour early so we could go to a concert at Charleston CountyHall circa 1975.Had a band none of us had heard of.ZZ Top.All the chairs were stacked on the side cause of a wresting match and we had to take our own chair from the side to sit on.
About that era also saw Bachman Turner Overdrive and Golden Earring at Gaillard Auditorium.
Those were the days.

I have to lean CDB, but ZZ Top is right up there! If you go body of work, I would have to say ZZ is #4! We have some pretty good options out there today Marcus King, Blackberry Smoke Bros., Turnpike Troubadors, Red Clay Strays, and Brent Cobb and Sam Morrow put out some good southern R&R.
Blast from the past for sure. Seemed like there was a concert every other week between County Hall and the Gaillard Auditorium. I don't recall seeing BOA there but I did see ARS. Awesome! Outside of those venues and staying in the area with notable bands, seeing REO Speedwagon at the Flying Dutchman sticks out.
My first job was pumping gas at Exxon on Ashley Phosphate. In fact the year I was there ('76) we turned one of the islands into a self serve... and so it began.
I remember my first business trip to the Newark Airport and stopping to gas up my rental car for return and getting out of my car to pump gas. I thought the attendant was going to slug me as he screamed ''that's my job, get back in your car''. My first experience with ''unionized gas attendants'' and no self serve.
Saw Montrose featuring Sammy Hagar at The Flying Dutchman .I might have seen other great bands there but I was too drunk to remember or notice.Remember drinking was 18 in that time.My dumbassery contributed to raising the drinking age I’m sure.A lot of shrimpers in my neck of the woods and they seemed to come across “square grouper” regularly.So junior/sr high school years a fog.
The past history of really good rock n roll classical music is still with us. We have the cd's music still on YouTube. We can still appreciate the music that we love. Sorry these kids have to listen to this really bad music today.
I imagine one day down the road people will long for the days of music made by an actual person and not AI.
The only front row seats I had ever purchased was to George Thorogood. I was feeling pretty good about that. A week before the show they canceled it. Never rescheduled. Don't remember why. smh
