Just like when he was at PSU, BGJ won the offseason and will choke in the clutch when the season really starts.

Would today's Penn State fans put up with Paterno having six losses in a row in BOTH 2003 and 2004? A four-game losing streak in 2001?

Would today's Penn State fans put up with Paterno being 2-9 vs. Lloyd Carr? Losing NINE in a row to Michigan. NINE IN A ROW!!! 3-8 vs. Kirk Ferentz? Kirk Ferentz! Losing eight of nine games to Iowa from 2000-2010. Iowa!

Uh huh. Sure you would.

I'm not as cynical so I don't see it as a shot at PSU or anyone else. No doubt the budget was smaller at Vanderbilt when James was there, so I can't fault the guy for stating a fact. I wouldn't say PSU was earlier in his career since he was still at PSU nine months ago. And with the way he kept finagling a pay raise almost every year, he certainly can't accuse PSU of being cheap when it came to paying him. Get a fat raise?? And have a team many considered to be one of the best in the country?? And start 3-3 with a couple truly embarrassing losses?? Something was wrong. Nobody, including James, should have been shocked by what happened next.
His statements, obviously (see what I did there? ) had absolutely NOTHING to do with Penn State.

I think we all know what the term "Gaslighting" means.

We need to come up with another term:
One to describe the situation when someone takes some nonsense from social media, completely misconstrues/misinterprets/contorts it (or just "makes &$^% up) and then posts THEIR outrage to THEIR own made-up nonsense.

How does the term "Midnighting" sound? (Yes, I know this specific one wasn't a Midnighter Special, but that is his gold-medal arena :))
JK, Midnighter - but "Midnighting" does have a certain ring to it. Don't you think?

Early in his career would be Vandy. Not everything is about Penn State.
It seems to be ....at least to a "sensitive" segment of the fan base. They turned on Nick Saban (what does he know compared to "us.") When he seemed to indicate that CJF's firing may have been premature.

Franklin is an expert in bullsh*t. This tracks. At some point his act won’t fly anymore and he’ll be holding pressers at North Texas or something.
With 100 million $$$$ in the bank. Perhaps you should be a "********" expert? Making **** up about a guy who holds 1 of only 5 and a half dozen such prestigious jobs in the country doesn't require much talent. Where is your next presser?

So, he didn’t figure out how to do more with more at PSU? Like, having the two highest paid coordinators in the sport? Private jets? No wonder he sucked.
Actually Franklin's record over approximately 150 games was slightly better than the 150 contests before he arrived.
So perhaps Penn State is what that record says they are. After 25 years, you are what your record says you are.
But hey, it's more fun to pretend "We Are."

How can it not? He had more at PSU. More than he will have at VT. And he saying he need to figure out how to do more with more as if it’s a new situation for him. Suggest you do the same with the glass of Franklin Can Do No Wrong.
More what? NIL? He seems to be very competitive with PSU in recruiting rankings.
The Freddie Fanboys of PSU should wake up and smell the coffee. PSU is in the Big Ten and an after thought when it comes to being in the top 3 of the conference. After Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana.....PSU gets to compete with Michigan, USC and perhaps Washington for 4th thru 6th place on an annual basis. Please detail the vast resources PSU enjoys compared to Ohio State, Oregon and Michigan.
If the current regime can't begin to attract more blue chip talent, the dynamics won't change for the better.

He improved Penn State football's all-time winning percentage, but don't tell the haters that.

You can call it whatever you want but just because you say or believe something doesn't make it true (that goes for all of us). My 'interpretation' of what Franklin is saying is an indirect shot at PSU because otherwise the statement makes zero sense - the last time he coached, in any capacity, at a non-power conference school was 1999. He has only ever been a HC twice before VT - three years at Vanderbilt, Penn State for 12. Every place he's been has been an upgrade in resources - except from PSU to VT. So, when he talks about having to do more with less 'early in his career' are you taking that to mean when he was a WR coach at Idaho State or DB coach at East Stroudsburg? The guy has been a HC for 15 years - is he talking about SEC school Vanderbilt having less? VT very clearly does not have as many or more resources than Penn State - by a longshot. So, what is he still figuring out? Why say that unless it's to try to position your current team as unique or different or superior compared to places you've been before? Yes, I'm overly sensitive to dumb things Franklin says. It's July and The Odyssey isn't out for another week.....

Do a poll or something. It would have to be easier than just making crap up - and a lot of folks seem to enjoy those :)

Your opinion would mean more to me if you weren't so obviously biased against PSU for railroading you. Anyway, put me on ignore if you like - you didn't refute or disprove anything I wrote and can't since it's my opinion. Or are those not allowed anymore?

Here’s the full, non-hackjob McMurphy-ized quote:

Q. You've had a lot of different stops. Everywhere you go to, you learn something good or bad. What did you learn that is going to make you be successful and compete for the ACC this year?

A. Yeah, I think everybody's journey is different, right? I talk about this with the players, as well. You got to embrace your journey.

I played Division II football. I coached Division II football. I think those humble beginnings - Marcellous has a similar background as well. Those humble beginnings make you appreciate everything.

I think a sense of appreciation for what you have and your blessings in the places you were at are more important than they've ever been in college football. When you're in D-ll, you don't have a nutrition bar, you have to wear a ton of different hats as a young coach, take on a ton of different responsibilities, that's valuable.

At each level there's different challenges and there's different resources. You got to take advantage of it.

Early in my career we always had to do more with less. Then when you get to a place like Virginia Tech, you got to understand how to do more with more. That's what we're all about. That's what we're going to embrace. I think my background and experiences in three of the major conferences in college football, as well as my time in the NFL, I think is going to serve me well at Virginia Tech and hopefully put these players in the best position to be successful.”
Did anyone read this?

There is zero animus to PSU in the full answer. Reading in full context, it's pretty clear that the "less with more" is referring more to his DII days than anything else. If PSU fans should be annoyed at anything, it's that he seems to go out of his way to not mention PSU.

I didn't know any of that had anything to do with PSU. But, cest la vie, wouldn't be the only thing that "I don't get it?"

And then later in his career he did less with more so it all balanced out. The funny part is this hack is like a jilted lover who is thrilled to be with their new hunk of spunk but always talks about the past.

Started earlier than that.

Vandy canceled its series (via snail mail) against NU since BGJ kept losing (despite NU having fewer resources and tougher academic standards for recruits).

And that was against Pat, who is also an offensively-challenged HC, mediocre game manager, etc.
