i dont think this is a big shock, i'm just not real convinced we will see much change. i think we will get back to what we did in year 1. but thats about it. florida is a favorite to win it all. ark and texas will have more talent. bama and tenn have better coaches. another team will have a much easier path. the needle to thread is small for pope. not sure finishing 5th in SEC, a win in the NCAAT and getting to a sweet 16 is going to reduce the noise

Pope is 4-1 against UT while at UK. UT arguably had better players than UK in all 5 games. Even so, a claimed UK fan (assumption) asserts UT has a better coach than UK. Interesting. It’s like the games don’t matter.

Pope is 0-4 as UK’s coach against Bama. I don’t think anyone can make the case against Bama having the better talent for those 4 games. But, on its face, without considering the talent disparity, one would reasonably conclude Oats the better coach.

Listen...I'm not a Noah pumper, ok. Im not sure what his ceiling is but to his credit, the pics and videos I've seen of him recently, he looks to be in way better physical shape. He's lost the baby fat and looks pretty good physically.

I really do think we see a vastly improved Trent Noah this season. I expect him to be quicker and better. I just don't know how much that translates to for him.

Im not a fan that swings from his jock strap, at all. To date, he has just not been good enough, frankly. But he has clearly been putting in the work and I'm confident he'll be way better than we've seen so far.

He does deserve credit for that much and I always wanna see a Ky boy do well.

i mean barnes killed pope when it mattered and how good you are as a coach goes well beyond head to head match up, especially when its just a handful of games. barnes has been to 3 elite 8s in the past 3 years. he is going to the hall of fame. pope has done and is going where exactly?

Time will tell but in the meantime Pope has done Barnes 4 out of 5 times with lesser talent.

Yeah, I have always found it funny that we have a hundred threads talking about the terrible coach Pope is, the worst game coach, teams quit, blah blah blah, and then we have threads about how horrible the teams are, the lack of talent, not up to standards, and then those untalented teams suffer the loss of 2-3 starters to injury each of the last two seasons and with that horrendous coach, against the hardest schedule in the country, we even managed to win the 3-4 games we won. Wait.....

Hope we see that demonstrated this season. His skill set and film sure can get you excited but you never know. When he signed, the whole loss of Freeman was okay with me and made some sense.
He's who I'm most excited to see develop. I wouldn't be surprised if we at times see him playing a very "Amari-esk" point forward role when we want to make some problematic size match ups.

Back to Barnes, like Cal, I have thought Barnes a great recruiter and not a great floor coach. He has underperformed, IMO, with some great talent. I think he is a good man, but has not maximized his teams’ potential. He beat Pope once since Mark took the UK job. It was in the tourney when Butler was hobbled and Robinson gone. So, Barnes got lucky UK was not at top strength for that one.

Cal and Barnes are good comparators. Cal is about even with Barnes head-to-head. Time will tell if Barnes can get more wins against Mark.

Outside of Noah, Kam and Moreno, name one player on this year’s roster you’ve seen play. You don’t have any idea of the potential this team possesses.
either do you. and you dont know the potential other teams possess either. all i know is that uk is going to start the year ranked somewhere between 15-20 in the nation and 5th or 6th in the SEC by most people.

if thats doom and gloom ok cool.

No I haven’t seen them and you haven’t seen me make any prognostications either. There are numerous examples recently of teams that came out of nowhere to have successful seasons. FAU, San Diego State etc…I prefer to let things play out.

and thats the difference between you and i.....i don't want UK to be a program that is like FAU or San Diego State. I want us to michan who lost 3 games last year, arizona who lost 3 games last year, duke who lost 3 games last year, uconn that lost 6 games. teams that win their conference, win/compete for conference tournament, get a 1 or 2 seed.

hope isnt a strategy, but its all this program apparently has anymore. i'm sure it will play out much differently than the last time

That’s where you’re wrong my friend. There is no difference between you and me. We’re both ardent supporters of the program and want the best. I just so happen to prefer to put the past behind me and look ahead with a positive outlook. We have the makings of a really good squad. Shooters, size, athleticism and depth at each position.

But they haven’t played together collectively. No one knows how they could complement each other’s skillsets.
Weird comment for someone who claims to be a UK fan. Calipari made a living off having a new team just about every year that no one knew how they would complement each other’s skill sets. Duke the same. In the NIL era, you could say that about most P4 teams.

We heard the EXACT SAME noise about Noah from Pope last off season. How he never missed, how he’d gotten in incredible physical shape, how folks were amazed at his improvement, etc.

And then the season began and it turned out he was not any better at all. I think I’m gonna decline to fall for the hype this time.
Mark Pope has no clue what he is talking about half of the time. Here is what he said about Travis Perry.

“I think he was on his way to becoming a legend here at Kentucky,” Pope said last week.
