Bob Knight, I believe, said he had never seen a center take the leap Nazr took from his soph season under Pitino to his junior year under Tubby. Mills, Sheppard, Heshimu, Padgett - Rick was not leaving behind the studs. It was a GREAT coaching job.

Happy for him, he won a title here and I believe he is a good person. He is still the least favorite UK coach my lifetime. He chose to leave town in the middle of the night and did nothing to curb the media narrative that he was run out of town because UK fans are racist. In reality, he was told to hire a new staff or be fired, he chose to be loyal to his staff and left town instead of being fired. At no point was it race, it was his diminishing coaching ability combine with his lack of recruiting.

Keith Bogans’ injury was devastating to a potential title run. More so than Anderson in ‘97. Bogans was really limited even though he braved it out.

97 100% wins it all with a healthy DA. I dont know that 2003 can say the same. Kansas and Syracuse were tough opponents.

It is odd, but neither Rick Pitino nor Calipari are in the collegiate Hall of Fame
I suspect the Naismith is more prestigious. What is the criteria for the collegiate HOF?

Edit: off court issues and violations play a role in the nomination process for the Collegiate HOF.

Wasn't he the coach of the 2006-07 team too? You know, the team that went 22-12 and lost in the second round? That team was an 8 seed--as was the 2005-06 team you referenced. Don't let Pope's and Calipari's records (post 2020) distort what you should expect of a UK basketball team.

As I said, his run from 1998-2005 was good by UK standards. It may have been "great" if Bogans wasn't injured in 2003, had UAB not beat his best teams 2004, and UK found a way to beat MSU in overtime in 2005.
You seem to have missed the point. Are saying he should have bowed out prior to the 2006-2007 team? He did leave after that season is why you can't include it when saying he stayed too long.

Tubby should have never been hired. The only HoF he should be in is the grifter hall of fame.

He was gifted a title team and an E8 the following season.

He never won anything before UK or after.

He put playing his son above the good of the team. He lied about Hawkins so he could keep playing his son.

I did think he deserved ‘98 at the time. But the 20 years after that showed that it had nothing to do with him.

You are one truly miserable individual. I don't think I've seen one post from you that is not criticizing, whining, and moaning about everybody and everything.

I firmly believe if that 05 team makes the Final Four Tubby is the UK coach a much longer time. He seemed to hate recruiting so much he just stopped trying after the Morris fax fiasco. But a second Final Four was the only thing he lacked at that point. We will never know (thank to Chuck Hayes sitting by the scorers table as MSU got 7 offensive rebounds on one play). Recruiting would have been much easier with more national press. Patterson was coming up soon. So bitter...
Ugh I still think back on that game. If we just grab a rebound in OT to go up 6, we likely close that one out. Too many missed opportunities on that one possession that lead to a 3 for them and huge momentum swing. It was downhill for Tubby after that game, just a lot of “what if” the ball bounces the right way

If they call the very obvious foul when Sparks hit the buzzer beater to tie it there is a very high likelihood we win it right there.
