“Live Action” Moana was released on Friday and grossed $43 million in NA and $52 million internationally in its first weekend; total of $95 million. The production cost was up to $250 million. With marketing and sharing ticket revenues with the theaters, Disney is trending towards another money loser.
The interesting thing about Moana is how negative the critics’ reviews are compared to “Live Action” Snow White. For Snow White the critics seemed to forgive many of its flaws but for Moana they are really harsh. “No creativity, same exact story, too much CGI, dull and unimpressive, etc.” (Disney must have offered a bad buffet at the prescreening?)
The other interesting thing is the first Moana animation was released in 2016 and grossed over $650 million vs a $150 million budget. Then in 2024 Disney released a Moana 2 animation in the theaters which grossed more than $1 billion vs a production budget of $150 million.
Bottom line: parents who take their kids to the movie will be fine, it is the same story as the first and kids won’t care about what the critics are complaining about (the parents may). But one has to wonder about the movie division of Disney. Do they have any creativity anymore? Just retreads?
Secondly, do their business people have a voice? It is less than 24 months since Moana 2 was in the theaters and they bring out a nostalgic Moana 1 live action film? What did they expect? Plus Disney’s Toy Story 5 is still going strong in the theaters, so they are competing against themselves.
The best thing going for Disney is their amusement parks (Thanks Walt and Roy). Management not so hot.

You’re worried about polar ice while I’m concerned about part of the USA running out of water. You’re the global climate change guy, I look at local issues, where people actually live.
Meanwhile in Texas we get a break from the heat this week with plenty of rain.
Nowhere in my post did I say I was worried about Polar Ice. It might burst your ego, but I didn’t even post it as some sort of gotcha. It’s a fact. The post mentioned 5,000 years. Stuff you post can’t even go back 30 years. The earth doesn’t work on a year to year basis. The earth works in very long periods of time. The fact that it’s hot in a desert in the middle of July is completely uncompelling to anyone of intelligence. 50 years ago the Climate alarmists said we were headed for an ice age. In the 80’s we had a huge hole in the ozone and needed to stop using aerosols. The 90’s came and suddenly Florida was going to be under water from global warming and the polar caps melting. They aren’t melting and the ice packs growing is a sign that, as a globe, we aren’t warming and may very well be slowly heading towards a significant cooling period.

Pretty sure I showed that Phoenix was significantly warmer this winter, not this summer. Been a trend that nights are not getting as cool in places like Phoenix driving up overall average temps. But ya, not happening in areas where people don’t live.
