He brought in Khadeen Carrington when he was an assistant. Forged a great relationship with the mom and closed the deal.

And as good as Carrington was he topped it by bringing in Myles Powell and he became one of the best players in the Big East in his time here.

Did you like Angel Delgado? This from Google....

The main recruiter responsible for bringing Angel Delgado to Seton Hall was former assistant coach Shaheen Holloway. He served as the lead recruiter for Delgado and was instrumental in landing the Pirates' top-15 national recruiting class in 2014, which also included Isaiah Whitehead and Khadeen Carrington.

How about Najai Hines? He just left SHU for a $4M contract at UConn. Think if we could have afforded him what he could have done at SHU.

Ditto Budd Clark, 2nd team All Big East and first team All Defense. all in just one year at the Hall. He left after just that one season for almost $3M for an SEC team.

There are others of course but you get my drift.

Regarding motivation....since he has been our head coach most every one of his peers have said publicly no team in the conference plays harder than the Pirate, which culminated in an unanimous COY selection. Those comments were a common refrain from every coach in the post games that I attended. Your team doesn't play that hard without being motivated.

I have attended several practices where Holloway was both an assistant to Kevin Willard and now the head coach. I have never seen a more intense coach or motivator in all my years.
Lol

So the biggest complaint of the KW years was we weren’t talented enough because our recruiting was sub par..his #1 recruiter was sha but Sha is an EXCELLENT recruiter?! No he isn’t..he’s an above average recruiter.

Antigua didn’t have something to do with Delgado? And Powell was overlooked because of his weight

Master motivator to me means you can motivate any player..Sha can’t do that..he can motivate his type of players better than anyone

But we have seen too many times…players who aren’t Shas type aren’t motivated..that is NOT a master motivator

Also, I know 3 D1 coaches…saying a team plays hard and tenacious is the lowest hanging fruit..it’s what you say when you have nothing to say..the fact that we take that as some big compliment is crazy

It Sha was as good as these coaches say he is..they would fear him and hate him and not say nice things at all…notice all the “nice guy” “amazing” coaches don’t have great teams

Sha is average maybe above average..good for him cashing in

The point is we do not all have to agree re the topic of Shaheen Holloway. He has his warts like most everyone in the business. And those warts at times seem to be a reason many don't feel he deserves his extension. I disagree but understand those that think that way.

Also, many pooh pooh SHU's financial issues as regards supporting the program via NIL. That is the part I really do not understand. Being near the bottom of the league in NIL spending every year since Holloway has been here is certainly not his fault. There's blame of course but it lies elsewhere.

Holloway is not a media darling and that is a problem that lies directly in his lap. But I cannot think of a coach,, warts and all that I would rather have leading this team for many years to come.
This is where you jump the shark constantly

You can’t think of ANY other coach you would rather lead this team?! ANY?!

Agree with a lot of what you have to say on this, but you know as well as I do that we got Angel because of Antigua, via the DR youth national team. That was the primary reason that crook was brought on.

Actually only partly.

Before Antigua got involved Kentucky was almost considered a lock. It was Holloway who stood in constant contact with Delagdo trying to ensure that he didn't commit to Kentucky.

Then once Antigua came aboard the combination of those two coaches closed the deal.

You jumped the shart in my book. Why don't you name a few highend coaches who want to come to SHU with its struggling NIL Budget?

Try to read better that isn’t what he said but yea good one

Why don’t we just give Sha a lifetime contract

How about how badly he knew the market the first couple of years? How about him telling Tyrese Samuel’s to basically F off over 300k when that was extremely cheap

Or him messing up with JQ situation

He’s an average coach. I am happy he WANTS to be here..some of you go over the top

Can’t understand the posters who seem to downplay the $$$ aspect of college hoops. They certainly acknowledge $$$ is an issue than seem to go on to discuss secondary or tertiary issues. Would have loved to see what Holloway could do with X’s $14 million this upcoming season.

Think most acknowledge it’s a significant issue.

But the “resource” disparity has been around forever. The schools getting top players are the ones who usually did so in the past. Think Calhoun didn’t have much better “resources” once he built up UConn in the early 90s and thereafter? He’s still an all time coach.

Schools with really good NIL still have ****** to mediocre years annually.

The portal hurt, no doubt, but if you don’t think there’s some smoke with annual roster turnover beyond $$, I’m not sure what to tell you. Budd Clark seems to have done everything in his power to avoid playing for Sha next season, and if there is anyone emblematic of the type of player Sha should be able to keep, it was him. A PG, like Sha, without real NBA prospects, who made a leap under Sha as a junior coming from a lower league and was guaranteed to have the ball and play as much as he wanted this past year. Yet risks all that to go play in a better league for not much more $$ it seems than we were willing to pay him.

I don’t believe much of what’s out there on NIL but there are absolutely kids annually that take less to play for a certain coach in a good situation. Including some top players. But hasn’t happened with us, and the rotation or bench guys seem to want to get the hell out of here as well, even when they aren’t being recruited over and have a path to PT.

And I say all this as one who thinks Sha is a good coach and who I’m happy to have.

agree with almost all you are say here except there is one large variable missing. That being an aggressive agent/handler pushing exit strategy so he can make a buck.

Yes agents play a role, and from what everyone seems to say, these particular agents are worse than their professional counterparts. But an agent can't force a player or family to do anything they don't want to do.

it's sales and the better ones can certainly shift a kid's thought process particularly in this NIL environment when so many were never exposed to agents.

Also, the players, at the end of a long season, when they have heard the same coach's voice for 6 months, are at the most vulnerable state to be poached. There is no summer cool off period between players and coaches to come back refreshed and ready to go. Makes agents jobs much easier.

Willard was very good at player retention. He could not hold his frosh point guard. Most of the others lost, he was probably upgrading. He wanted the PG to stay.

True except most of these decisions are made in December and January

Really then what can any coach do? I don't doubt what you are saying.

I heard at the regular season st johns game at MSG that we had discussed a number with Hines and that Kentucky was ready to go to 4 times the number. Seems like it was accurate.

We are better off keeping the occasional good player that wants to stay and then wait for the dust to settle like we generally have the last two years.
