Like the NCAA Tournament, the chance for upsets are what fuels so much interest in the World Cup.

Well, they've already jumped the shark so why not? This will actually make it a little easier to navigate since no more 3rd place teams will advance to the knockout rounds. But that's going to be one massive tournament already. They're going to play in 6 countries over 3 different continents, with the bulk of the tournament in Morocco, Portugal & Spain but one match each in Uruguay, Argentina & Paraguay. It's gonna really suck to draw one of those South America games and then have to travel across two hemispheres (east-west & north-south).

Not so fast. Knowing FIFA they'll allocate the 16 additional spots to Africa, Asia and CONCACAF. And probably add another round of playing games a few months before the World Cup.

Interesting. I suspect the 3 games in South America commemorating the 100th anniversary of the 1st World Cup in Uruguay won’t count towards the 2-cycles without hosting rule. But with multiple nations hosting probably being a thing every World Cup now, they may change that rule anyway. Two things we do know: FIFA loves money & there’s nowhere else they can make more than about half what they can in USA.
