It got us 1 title, 2 title appearances, 4 final4s, and like 7 Elite 8s. We were contenders almost every single year, we had more wins than almost everyone else in the span. We were the "IT" team. And despite Cals coaching shortcomings, it took a heck of a lot of effort by the NCAA and officials to keep us from not dominating even more.

Regardless, you need talent. Everyone here should be in agreement on that.
Cal came in like lightning. He exploited a market inefficiency. He recognized that the average top 25 prospect was better than they were generally thought to be and embraced a marketing strategy tailored for NBA minded player.

We peaked in 2015 and just kinda rode that momentum until it petered out in the 2020's. We might have been the "It" team, I think that has probably been Duke for awhile now, but we have been strictly a second or third tier program since 2015 in terms of performance. After 2015, our average recruit got worse. Despite less high level freshman, they still entered the draft at a high rate. Kansas and Duke in particular began hunting on our turf and taking high impact prospects.

I have tremendous memories of the Cal era. The first half of the 2010's was so much fun. The latter half of the 2010's had some frustration, but the 2017 team was a real contender while the 2016 and 2019 teams were good enough to make a run with some luck. I loved the Cal era. It just ran it's course, and it was time to move on.

I think this season is really difficult to judge right now. We definitely didn't have the best recruiting on paper so if you are expecting or wanting that then you have every right to complain and be disappointed. No one is going to argue that Pope's recruiting is as good as Cal's was three years in and it would be foolish to. At the same time this is not a disaster for Kentucky and maybe some of these players turn out better than what they look.

I don't understand the hate either way, people that want early Calipari recruiting have every right to be upset but the ones that are saying let's see how the year goes also have a valid point. I think at the core it might be just a difference of expectations and desires. Some would be thrilled to make it to the sweet 16 and I think this team has a decent chance of that but some like OP seem to want Kentucky to belong in the top tier of basketball schools and they just don't at any metric.

Honestly, anyone wanting early Calipari recruiting needs a wellness check. Cal was 1 of 1 in that regard and there are no other options for that. Not when Duke is now heavily recruiting the top of the food chain also. I thought your post was excellent and I love ceding ground in fairness to valid perspectives I disagree with. That said, hoping for Cal-type recruiting by any fan is foolish — if people wanted that, they shouldn’t have been asking for Cal to go.

Thankfully to me, I think having that type of recruiting is unnecessary to win at the highest levels.

With 5/5 coming, Europeans and the portal, winning with OAD's comes with a very clear ceiling in the current era.

Pope has the kind of roster this year that will test his coaching chops. Gets them really going, could be an Elite 8 team. Can't figure them out and he can be a 32 type team. Let's see what he's got.

“hoping for Cal-type recruiting by any fan is foolish — if people wanted that, they shouldn’t have been asking for Cal to go.”

You don’t think there were people that were sick of Cal and ready for him to go but wished we could keep the same recruiting?

It was with a clear and non foolish mind I was willing to make that trade. I was ready to part ways.

Sure. And I’d like my job to pay me $4M per year. There’s wishing for things and then there’s reality. There is no one in CBB going to recruit like Cal. That was part of the deal — everyone should have known that then.

I’m not beat up about it because there’s a whole lot more to CBB than recruiting.

I think you are probably right and what I said was disingenuous to OP. What I should have said was if you are expecting to be a top tier recruiting school for basketball then you have every right to be upset because Kentucky is definitely not a top tier basketball recruiting school any longer. Equating people that are upset with just saying they want something unrealistic does them a disservice where wanting to have classes that are equivalent to Duke, UConn or Michigan might be more in the realm of possibility

I think you could definitely argue how important recruiting and getting talent is. Overall though I feel like all of this debate comes down to what your expectations and hopes are for Kentucky. If you are good with sweet 16's and an occasional elite eight then you probably feel Pope is doing fine and there isn't a problem. If you want a national championship then its clear Pope is the wrong man for the job. It just all depends on where you are willing to put the bar for success. I don't need or expect us to be a contender every year. If Pope can get to the point where he is routinely getting Kentucky out of the round of 32 that is enough for me which is why I feel I am willing to give him more chances because on paper I believe this is a team that can achieve that. I understand Kentucky is not a top tier basketball school any longer, you could argue it isn't even a second tier school based strictly on post-season success but for some that hold Kentucky to the bar it once used to be I can understand how they could be upset with Pope.

Pope's problem is he doesn't teach defense.
Which is totally puzzling considering he played for Pitino. Billy Donovan didn't prioritize it either, just tried to outscore teams, it wasn't until he hired a defensive specialist (Larry Shyatt from Wyoming) that he won those 2 titles. Maybe Pitino making both of them play hard nosed defense, burnt them out on it lol. 🤣🤣

Idk man. Last season’s team finished 28th in KP defensively. I was mildly encouraged by the defensive progression by the staff. There’s still work to do — it was the offense that struggled last year. Gotta shoot for being top 20 in OFF and DEF.

This is where you throw the entire BBN vault at Rosser or bring back Milan for a 5th year.

I don't think Rosser will be leaving his home state.

We just have to suffer through one more god awful season and Pope is gone. Batt will hire his guy, most likely will be Nate Oats, since Oats loves Batt. I can’t wait personally. UK isn’t a threat under Pope. And will never be.
Yep this is one of the reason I love Mitch is gone. Usually when a new AD comes in not long after that he brings in his new coaching staff and right now our basketball program really could use it. You're 100% about Oats, Batt and him are pretty tight.

Kansas offered 44 players in 2026 and signed only 7. So they "whiffed" in 37 players. We only have an issue with it because we follow UK recruiting. Every coach and team misses way more than they hit, it is the nature of the game.
Kansas has back-to-back years of landing top 2 picks. Cal missed on Rivers, Beal, Miller, Nash, Christmas, Caldwell-Pope, Behanan, Lacey, and others in 2011.

What did it any of that matter when you can still land Anthony Davis?

Oats would crush it here.

Boosters and fans would love him because he is a cut throat and a true wolf, much in the same way Pitino was. Pope, however, is a nice guy in an age where nice guys are being fed to wolves in the recruiting realm.

This is easily his most exciting roster to date.

I actually think it's going to be very good - I really like Wilkins and with getting Milan and Malachi, I think you have a really solid 4.

One of my favorite movies- and very appropriate here. Pope is a lamb- it's just a matter of time until he is back in Utah.

With all due respect, are we comparing HOF recruiter Bill Self to zero 5* Mark Pope?

2 KY born 5* players just this past recruiting class.

Just saying…

My only point was every team misses on tons of recruits every year. Not just Pope, said nothing about coaching ability.

How can you say that when Duke's recruiting is better than ever. Arizona and uconn are doing OK too.
